Zeus v3 (Zbot) Online Banking Virus: Details, How To Avoid and Remove It

The Zeus v3 or Zbot trojan has reappeared in a controversial way when it was discovered that the scammers behind the trojan had stolen around £675,000 from customers online bank accounts at a top high street bank.

It is said that around 3,000 people are thought to have been infiltrated between July 5 and August 4. Worst thing is, it is thought to still be going on.

How Do Users Get Infected? – Trojans just like this one tend to be very tricky to detect. They hide themselves on websites, in emails and via 3rd party software and freeware.

Once the trojan has found its new home on your computer, they can save every single keystroke on your computer and steal, send and distribute any sort of data that you have on your PC, such as passwords — or in this case online banking details.

Removal Instructions – Unfortunately, by the time of writing, it appears that there is no such standalone removal tool for the v3 version of Zeus, but there is a list of checks you can go over incase you are worried about being infected. This list can be found here via

You should also make sure that your latest virus and spyware protection application is up to date to give you the best chance of avoiding the trojan.

If you do not have an antivirus program, you can download any of these programs for FREE.

Microsoft Security Essentials
Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware
AVG Antivirus
Avast Antivirus

As soon as a standalone Zeus v3 removal tool is available, we will update this article.
