Kinect for Xbox 360: Will Understand Sign Language

According to a recent patent for Microsoft’s upcoming motion-control device Kinect, not only will the device be able to map your movements but it will also be able to detect American sign language.

Although Microsoft has not officially announced if this feature will be included with Kinect when it launches later this year, the patent is there for Microsoft to build upon.

Originally Kinect was designed and marketed for gaming use, being a controller-less peripheral that tracks your body movements and gestures and translates them into actions within a game, therefore the hardware should be more than capable of recognizing signing gestures, could Kinect be used to teach students sign language?
