The BBC announced on Thursday that it is going to launch a U.S. focused news site that will see it go up against local newspapers and broadcasters. The broadcaster has taken on journalists to beef up its coverage of general news, business, sports and entertainment when the site goes live with advertising partner HP.
Yinka Adegoke from Reuters.com is reporting that the new site will be found at BBC.com, but at the moment that address is redirected to BBC.co.uk. The BBC is mainly funded by a license fee paid by every British household who have a TV, this gets the broadcaster $5.4 billion (£3.6billion) each year.
The BBC services in the UK do not feature any advertising, but the global website when viewed by readers in the U.S. do see ads. “You’re going to see more analysis, more insight and more perspective that connects the dots on events and issues that affect us all in the U.S.” said senior vice president of BBC.com Miranda Cresswell.
This venture will see the broadcaster come in direct competition with the web operations of U.S. newspapers and broadcasters. Before this new venture a lot of the BBC’s U.S. news coverage was based on major national stories that might have had some international impact.
