Verizon iPhone: Custom device for China too?

We have an interesting article for you to read now, which confirms that the Chinese market are also hoping that Apple releases a custom iPhone with support for their new network along with Verizon’s CDMA network.

As reported from Apple Insider, Verizon Wireless has already confirmed that they would be willing to take on the iPhone if Apple chooses to, but now we have details on China Mobile – the world’s largest cellular provider, who also want a new version of the iPhone.

China Mobile has access to TD-SCDMA, a new and unique 3G network which has been developed by the Chinese government. If Apple were to release a custom iPhone with support for this network, it would mean that China Mobile would not have to pay out patent royalties for using TD-SCDMA since China developed it.

At the moment, China is split using both GSM/UMTS and CDMA/EVDO, just like the four major carriers in the U.S (AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile). But will Apple take the risk with this new technology? They know that the rewards for cracking the Chinese market will significantly boost their sales, but using a royalty free network comes with many infringement risks.
