3D Gaming on iPhone Now: HoloToy 1.02

By Gary Johnson - Mar 25, 2010

A great 3D technology app for iPhone and iPod Touch devices has just had its second update. HoloToy 1.02 has a bouncy ball, that is displayed on the screen in a virtual 3D scene.

Developed by kode80 LLC, the app displays scenes by detecting the angle of the device and distorting the scenes in a way the human brain would expect, thus creating a scene that seems to go right into the device itself. Combined with special lighting techniques and physics a remarkable 3D scene is created which users can carry around with them.

The original app has been a big hit on the App Store, bringing portable 3D to a wide audience. Ben Hopkins, the apps designer had great fun in the development of this app and is constantly experimenting with new updates. HoloToy 1.02 is only $0.99 on the App Store. iPhone or iPod Touch required with OS 3.0 or later.

I think compared to the other apps claiming to be holographic this app is quite good. It really does give the spacial feeling of a hologram inside the iPhone. I would like to see a 3 dimensional realistic human face in the future. I saw a real hologram demo of that years ago in college.

  • Hey Slippy Sloppy,
Sorry you feel this way. The app works based on a fixed viewing angle so to really appreciate the effect there is a 'sweet spot' to hold the device at. If you were sitting down hold it out in front of you resting on your lap, screen facing you – then rotate the device for the effect. Please email me (address on my site) if you have further problems – I want everyone to enjoy HoloToy. 🙂

This app is awful and does not look 3D, it just looks like you're rotating around a 3D object. The YouTube videos also make it look a lot better than it actually is. Save your money.
