Final Fantasy XIII: Edge Review is 5/10 – ‘Takes risks from series foundations’

By Alan Ng - Mar 5, 2010

If you have been reading the countless reviews for Final Fantasy XIII that went live recently, you’ll know that the majority of them were decent scores. Not this one though, as Edge Magazine has just scored the game a 5 out of 10. Ouch.

As taken from their website, their first line sort of sums up their general impressions of the game: ‘Things don’t always go so smoothly’. Reasons for this according to them, include a ‘poor’ story, linear battles and cutscenes, and ‘brave’, but ‘risky’ structural changes from previous titles in the series.

If you are looking for a different take on Final Fantasy XIII, then the usual reviews that you’ve been reading recently, then surely Edges fits the bill.

Take a look at their review in full here, then let us know your thoughts on the poor score.

FFXIII is one of the best installments in the series. Seriously, I can't take Edge seriously. They gave FFXII a score that did not suit it at all, THAT was the failed game. Shitty voice acting, terrible 'gambit system' and a battle system that verged on boring and monotonous. FFXIII was fast-paced, had an excellent story (unlike FFXII… which really didn't even have one…) and the characters were extremely likable! Not to mention, the battle system was incredible!

I bought this game, played it once for 2 hrs, put it down and never played it again. Last time I played it was spring break. Crapy game. I would give it a 2 out of 10

5/10 is generous. I am 3 hours in and I really CANNOT force myself to play any more, despite being a major fan of the series. The game stinks and I'm getting a refund.

Well the first 3 hours stink at least. And so bad that I don't care if it becomes an 11/10 game at the 20 hour mark, I simply cannot stand another minute of it.
