Archos 7 Home Tablet: Impressive Hands-on Video

By Jamie Pert - Mar 1, 2010

If you have been looking for an alternative to Apple’s iPad you may want to check out Archos’ 7 Home Tablet, an impressive video of this tablet can be seen at the end of this post.

This tablet features a 7-inch display and runs Google Android, it is powered by a 600MHz ARM9 processor which is capable of 720p HD video playback (7 hours from a full charge).

This tablet costs just $179 in the USA and €149 in Europe which is much better than the iPad’s pricing which starts at $479.

The video shows that the Android OS is pretty responsive and is more than capable of delivering a good web and multimedia experience, I must say after watching the video I considered purchasing one.

Do you like the look of the Archos 7 Home Tablet? Is it a real alternative to Apple’s iPad?

I bought an Archos 605 wi fi and have regretted my purchase…..because you never top paying. Plug ins for this plug ins for that. If I buy a TV I dont want to pay extra to be able to play a DVD on it. This was a rippoff from the off and if I had known this fact I would have gone for another brand. I just hope ebay helps me get some money back as it is going as soon as possible. Even some cheap mobile phones give you full video function right from the box. They should state on the box that you have to pay twice to use it or the reason you wanted it. It is just an expensive MP3 now.

I bought the Archos 7HT with 8gb Flash memory in Jan 2011 and promptly returned it. Why? The real deal breaker for me, and the sole reason for returning it, is the HORRIFIC and unforgiving sensitivity when screen scrolling. It just doesn’t work. Period. While trying to move a page around or scroll through a list, it will open a menu or press a link that you didn’t want. Always! I nearly tore my hair out over this defect. I knew the scrolling was sub-standard before I purchased it, because of all the complaints about I read in the reviews, but I thought “How bad can it really be?” It’s bad. Real bad. Believe me. There is no work around to this defect. Using a stylus doesn’t help, nor does downloading an app, which was suggested to me. I loved the Archos so much that I tried everything to get the scrolling to work, but my efforts were for naught. It’s almost like driving a car with a steering mechanism that doesn’t work properly. It has a mind of its own and you never know where you’re going to end up. Take my advice: Stay away from this product.

when is Archos 7 Home Tablet 8gb supplied to retailers in the USA?

    • I have seen the Archos 7 Home Tablet available at Amazon with a selling price of USD 199 for a 8 gb model.

You can head to Amazon’s website and search for it.

  • Archos 7 Home Tablet 2gb is $179 / Euro 149 eg £129 for pre-orders at DataMind –
Archos 7 HT uses Android Operating System. Archos 7 Internet Media Tablet uses Linux OS and hard drives:

  • GMS

According to the Archos site, the Archos 7 is $449, not $179…
At $449 it is too expensive, but at $179 I would buy in a heart beat…

    • perhaps the price you was looking at was for the Archos 7 Internet Media Tablet, this is a different product, if not please post the URL and I will check it out for you.

  • I have Archos 5 and wouldn't mind additional 2 inches (and who would?)

At $179, this is a price I can justify the purchase of a tablet for, due to the lack of functionality compared to a netbook. Am I the only person to realize that technology seems to be pushing forward humanities ability to surf the web on the toilet?
