Final Fantasy XI: Online Servers will be closed down for FFXIV – unconfirmed

By Alan Ng - Feb 17, 2010

Before you get all worked up, this is just a rumor at the moment. It has been reported by one source that Square-Enix are planning to shut down the online servers for Final Fantasy XI, to make way for the upcoming Final Fantasy XIV game.

That’s according to VG247, who have taken their info from GameCrep. Seems like a pretty drastic and risky move to us, considering the game has picked up a cult following, ever since its launch way back in 2002.

Surely they can take the necessary measures to keep both games up and running, so everyone stays happy, no?

We’ll get back to you when we hear from SE themselves. If you still play FFXI, let us know what you think of this.

SE is merging low world popluation servers start on march 1st 2010, so there will be only about 8-12 active server, server like guarda is being merged onto lakshmi. And new game content has been release to keep the game going for another 1-2 years.

The game may be aging but there are still enough players that will be sticking around after FFXIV comes out for SE to justify keeping the game running. They have also said that as long as there are people playing, they will develop content. Of course it’s still a business, so they would have to be making a profit in order to do so.

They have already said that they wouldn't be discontinuing FFXI officially. They have a years worth of development in the pipeline for FFXI after the release of FFXIV.
