ST-Ericsson U8500: New 1.2 GHz Dual ARM Cortex A9 processors

By Jamie Pert - Feb 15, 2010

If you regard Qualcomm’s 1GHz Snapdragon processor as a fast processor for a handset this next news may come as a shock to you, dual core processors will soon becoming to future handsets.

ST-Ericsson have recently unveiled their new U8500 chip, this 45nm chip will feature two ARM Cortex A9 processors, each of which will un at 1.2GHz, this in affect makes it almost 4 times more powerful than the iPhone’s processor.

This chip will allow future smartphones to undertake much more demanding tasks such as 1080p video recording, displaying at a resolution of 1024×768 and taking photos with a 20 megapixel sensor.

The challenge for manufacturers will be powering this chip for a long period of time, there are rumors of 12 hours of 1080p video playback of a single charge from a 1000 mAh battery, however this in my opinion seems unlikely.

Don’t get too excited for now, apparently this chips are around 1-2 years away.
