Apple iPad Price: Cost of iPhone 3G compared

By Peter Chubb - Jan 28, 2010

We were a little surprised to learn that Apple were to continue its partnership with AT&T, by announcing that they were to offer the mobile data service for its iPad tablet device. We now know how much the device will cost, but how do the data plans compare to that of the iPhone 3G data plan.

The upfront cost for the Apple iPad varies, the 16GB version will cost $499, the 32GB will cost $599 and the 64GB version will cost $699. This is for the Wi-Fi only version, for Wi-Fi and 3G add another $129 to each model.

Compare that to the iPhone cost, $99 for the 3G version, $199 for the 16GB 3GS and $299 for the 32GB 3GS version. Things certainly look different when you look at the cost of the minimum cash outlay per month and then for the next two years along with the data cost for two years.

The monthly cost for 3G data on both the iPad and the iPhone is the same, $29.99 per month. The difference with the two is that the iPad does not require a contract, whereas the iPhone does. The iPad also comes unlocked, but we all know that the iPhone is locked to AT&T.

I just don't think its worth comparing the iphone to the ipad. They provide very different jobs.. why you don't compare your netbook to your cell phone? The ipad is and always will be a luxury gadget that people will choose to get as an extra once they already own and iphone/ibook…etc

  • Although there is quite a price difference between the iPhone and the iPad, its obvious why….SIZE MATTERS!!! The functionality is similar, but the size of the pad itself is reason enough for the price difference. If you think it's too expensive, you probably can't afford one anyway.
