2.5 million 3-D TVs: Sony’s Expected 2010 Sales

We mentioned a few days back that Sony had announced release dates and price lists for its range of 3-D TVs, they have since stated that they will be able to sell 2.5 million units by the end of the fiscal year. Those figures are very optimistic for such a new piece of technology — the release of Avatar on 3D Blu-ray could certainly help those numbers.

If you thought that the sales projection was a little high — then how about 25 million units. This is the figure that Sony’s TV division head, Yoshihisa Ishida reports that they will sell by the end of the 2011 fiscal year. Information Week reports that Sony expects 1 in 10 TV sales to be a 3D model.

When new consumer electronics products are launched sales are normally slow — but news that a PS3 firmware upgrade will allow 3D gaming has done nothing to hurt sales forecasts. If this does happen, then sales of both Sony 3D TVs and PlayStation 3s will be very healthy.

The evolution of TVs have been slow since the launch of LCD and Plasma, 3D is the biggest upgrade yet and should prove very popular. We just hope that the technology is as good as they say it is.
