A couple of days ago we informed our readers that the full superstars, legends and divas roster for the much-anticipated WWE 12 game had recently been confirmed, which as we mentioned, includes John Cena, Alberto Del Rio, Big Show, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Randy Orton, current Tag Team champion David Otunga, Michelle McCool and The Undertaker.

We now have some more exciting news for all you WWE fans out there, as according to a recent gamerant.com article by Riley Little, the upcoming wrestling game will also be available as a Collector’s Edition. What’s more is that the Collector’s Edition cover star will in fact be chosen by the fans, with the choice being between John Cena and The Rock.

All fans have to do to vote is head on over to WWE Games’ official Facebook page. They will then be faced with the choice of either John Cena’s ‘The Champ’s Edition,’ or The Rock’s ‘People Edition.’ The voting process actually ties in with the upcoming WrestleMania XXVIII match between the two aforementioned stars, and is a great way to create hype for the upcoming event.

The Collector’s Edition will also contain exclusive content, which depends on who wins the contest. THQ hasn’t actually confirmed what extra content would come with each Collector’s Edition as of yet, but the final pack-ins will no doubt be catered to the WWE Superstar that receives the most votes. At the time that Riley wrote the article, The Rock was in the lead by more than 5000 votes.

Yuke’s may even hold a separate competition once this current one has ended, in order to decide what content will be featured in the Collector’s Edition. However, the developer hasn’t made any official announcements as of yet. A new trailer – which features both John Cena and The Rock – has also been released for the current promotion, which you can see for yourself below this post.

The WWE 12 game will be available for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii on November 22nd in North America and November 25th in the UK. Who would you like to see on the cover of the WWE 12 Collector’s Edition?

A few days ago we spoke about health problems which are associated with playing consoles way too much, today on the front page of The Sun, the British Newspaper, the page was dominated by a news story which was titled “Death by Xbox”, this article spoke about a 20-year-old from Sheffield who sadly died from a blood clot which was supposedly caused by playing his Xbox for up to 12 hours at a time.

The article was written by The Sun’s health editor, Emma Little, it talks in detail about how Chirs Staniforth died outside a JobCentre, apparently he was talking to a friend about how he woke in the night with a weird feeling in his chest, however thought nothing of it, shortly after the converstion Chris dropped a packet of chewing gum and whilst attempting to pick it up he jolted back and began to spasm, an ambulance was called, but the paramedics could not save him.

It has now been confirmed that prior to this Chris did not suffer from any health issues, however the long spells his body stayed stationary for resulted in deep vein thrombosis, this was what caused Chris’ death, and his father wants people to realize of the serious risks game addiction can cause. According to The Sun’s article Chris lived for his Xbox and absolutely loved playing Halo, that said his faster wanted to make it clear that he didn’t blame the console’s manufacturer Microsoft.

If you are worried about someone you know encountering a similar fate you may want to point them in the direction of some deep vein thrombosis signs and symptoms, there are some things you can do to help prevent this from happening, check out this link for details.

We would love to hear what you think about this sad incident, do you think developers should do more to make gamers more aware of the risks? We think that loading screens which show warnings, or a leaflet inside the game’s box could perhaps make a slight difference, however at the end of the day it is up to the individual to live a more active lifestyle as we think everyone knows that long spells of gaming are not good for health.

Do you exercise between games?

When writing about the latest technology news you hear lots of rumors which sound far-fetched, today we have come across an article posted on Teknylate which suggests that Mirosoft’s next major OS release, Windows 8, will be able to play Xbox 360 games straight from the disc.

To be honest with you this rumor sounds rather unbelievable to us and the fact that Teknylate’s post has no source suggests that it is fabricated, however even if it does turn out to be false it does open up quite an interesting debate.

Let’s start by repeating what Teknylate’s Frank Tizzle has told us, he says that Windows 8 will feature its own subscription-based ‘Live’ feature (separate to Xbox Live), he also suggests that you will be able to play Xbox 360 by placing the games into your PC’s DVD tray, not only this but future Xbox 360 games will feature a new graphic on the retail packaging which states that they are Windows 8 compatible.

If this turns out to be accurate it suggests that virtualization / emulation will be used as there are such major differences in terms of architecture etc when you compare a PC to the Xbox 360. Also it will be interesting to see what hardware requirements games need if Windows 8 does offer this functionality.

Why it makes sense

There are lots of reasons why this functionality makes sense, firstly it allows Microsoft to earn money through a subscription based service for PC gaming like they do with Xbox Live, secondly it will allow Microsoft to gain extra income via purchases, this means Microsoft could combat Steam and Direct2Drive in this particular market.

In terms of peripherals it also make sense, Xbox 360 controllers and Kinect are currently compatible with Windows and if you own wireless gaming receiver you can connect other wireless peripherals to your PC. This will make playing 360 games on your PC pretty easy as third-party controllers etc would makes things much more complicated.

When you look at game development there are some serious advantages, game development costs could decrease massively as only one product will have to be worked on, rather than PC and Xbox 360 releases. This could potentially mean that games and DLC prices could drop (we doubt it), not only this but developers should be able roll out patches more frequently.

Previously we have been told that Microsoft take a loss when selling a console, obviously profits are made via Xbox Live subscriptions, game purchases, peripheral sales and DLC, however if Windows 8 plays Xbox 360 gamers it means profits can be made from games etc without ever taking a loss on a console sale. It also means that Xbox 360 games will still sell pretty well even when the next-gen Xbox arrives.

Do you think this rumor will turn out to be accurate?

Rumors are suggesting that Microsoft will reveal the next-generation Xbox at E3 2012, some people are suggesting that this will be called the Xbox 720, however this is unconfirmed, today we will look possible technical specifications and a price point for the console.

Let’s start with price, obviously it is hard to predict a price as we do not know for sure what the next-gen Xbox will feature, however we do have some insight from previous consoles to go by. The Xbox 360 was available upon launch in two different configurations, $299 for the Core model and $399 for the Premium model, later on the Elite launched for $479, currently you can by the new smaller Xbox 360 250GB for just $299, so how much will Microsoft ask for the Xbox 720?

We think that it is safe to say that the next Microsoft console will retail for somewhere between $400 – $500, whether there will multiple versions on offer is hard to say, if this is the case don’t be too surprised if there is a more expensive model available.

As for specifications it is even harder to make predictions, in terms of internal storage if standard 2.5-inch hard drives are used we expect a minimum of 250GB to be available, this is plenty to be honest, but when you compare SATA hard drive prices it wouldn’t cost a lot more to give it a 320GB or 500GB HDD instead, we don’t think that 1TB of storage will be necessary as 500GB should allow you to store plenty of games, DLC and demos. There is also a chance that Microsoft may choose to give the 360 a solid-state drive, these use less power, run cooler and are quieter and faster than standard HDDs.

In terms of connectivity we think that it will feature integrated WiFi b/g/n, this will ensure that it will be able to connect to existing wireless access points and even lots of the latest and greatest wireless routers. We still expect there to be an Ethernet port, to be honest 100Mb/s is sufficient for most of us, however it will not cost a lot to make this a Gigabit Ethernet port.

The Xbox 360′s optical drive reads dual-layer DVDs which hold roughly 8GB of data, apparently some of this storage is used for anti-piracy measures, therefore we don’t think that this format will allow enough for a next-gen console. The PS3′s Blu-ray drive supports single-layer discs which hold roughly 25GB of data and also dual-layer discs which hold roughly 50GB of data, this swamps 360 media and despite backing HD-DVD the format ending up being discontinued. We wonder if this time round Microsoft will bite the bullet and give the next-gen Xbox a Blu-ray drive, either that or a new format altogether.

The performance hardware within the 720 is where things get really difficult to predict, what we can say is that dual-core and quad-core processor manufacturers have made huge advances since the 360 arrived in late 2005, also the influx of high-end smartphones and tablets has ensured that GPU’s have came on leaps and bounds. The 360′s 3.2 GHz PowerPC Tri-Core Xenon processor and 512MB RAM ensured that it would have longevity, the new Xbox will undoubtedly wipe the floor with this, however Microsoft have to take into account price limitations. We would like to see at least 4 cores with clock speeds of 3.5GHz per core, however we think that Microsoft could surprise us with a 6 or 8 core chip.

As for graphics processor the 360 featured a 500 MHz ATI Xenos GPU which was quite similar to the ATI Radeon X1900 / X1950 graphics cards, we think that Microsoft will stick with ATI (who were acquired by AMD back in 2006), perhaps Microsoft will choose something similar to to the 67xx / 68xx series, however something like this is extremely hard to predict.

We have now spoken about the next-gen console’s main attributes therefore we will just list some other things we would like to see, we think that HDMI-out is a given, perhaps this will output at a higher resolution than 1080p and will support 3D. We still think that there will be USB ports for charging headsets / controllers and we hope that there will be support for Xbox 360 peripherals.

What do you want the next-gen Xbox to feature?

If you’re a gamer and have an Xbox 360 then you would know what Kinect is, and you may have already pre-ordered the high-tech controller for your 360, but when did you do that? Some people that procrastinated might be paying the price for ordering late.

There will always be critics and they will be right about some of the problems Kinect has, but this motion controller will set a new benchmark for active gaming, one that is not perfect but a great step in the right direction.

Being the owner of both the PS3 and Xbox 360 – its good to own both motion controllers – this gives us a perspective that’s not one based on “what other people say”. Both systems will do things better than the other, but when it comes to pre-orders for the PS3 and 360, there will be pros and cons.

The Kinect will release today in the U.S. and in 6 days time for Europe, some people will try their luck at stores, while others would have pre-ordered. If you ordered from play.com you may have had an email stating that your order might not be shipped at release thanks to high demand, and may be the same for other stores too. Did you get such an email?

Every store will prioritize differently, but first come first serve seems to be a common approach. I’ve always thought it was mad to pre-order months in advance when release dates can change – GT5 is one story – but those that pre-ordered Kinect within the last month may live to regret it when they see friends getting the device before them.

Are you paying a price for a late Kinect pre-order? Tell us your story, and if you’re buying Kinect, how are you doing it.

Microsoft have recently announced that Xbox Live services for the original Xbox will soon be coming to an end, apparently Microsoft did not take this decision lightly, however feel that “this will provide the greatest benefit to the Xbox Live community”.

As of April 15th Microsoft will be ‘pulling the plug’ on the original Xbox’s live services, this will also affect Xbox Originals being played on the Xbox 360.

The news doesn’t come as a great surprise given that the Xbox is now nine-years old, it is thought that anyone still utilizing Xbox Live functionality on the original Xbox will be contacted either by email or Xbox Live.

It is thought that one of the games that will be affected the most is Halo 2, this game still has a large following even though it was released over 5 years ago, for further details check out MCV.

Do you feel that this is acceptable?
