I have been to hospital many times, but only needed to have an X-Ray a couple of times, but that is a different story at the dentist, I have had numerous X-Rays there. However, at no point have I looked at these machines and thought that they were 115 years old – well the invention anyway.

The X-Ray or X-radiation, which is its technical term was invented back in 1895 by Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen. The German scientist stumbled across the idea while running experiments with Vacuum tubes. It was then that he took an X-ray of his wife’s hand and started to show it about, the response from both the public and the scientific world was immense.

He had to give this new form of radiation a name, so settled with ‘X’, the reason behind this was because he had no name for it, as it was unknown. There were many objections over this name, but it stuck – cannot imagine it being called anything else.

There are so many misconceptions of the X-Ray, which NASA aims to explain in more detail. Do you think that this technology is one of the most important discoveries? I am sure that you have some amazing X-Ray related stories to tell us, just keep them clean.

In light of it being 115 years since the invention of the X-Ray, we thought we would take a look at some cool gadgets that have been inspired by this invention. Who would have thought that something that is used in the medical field will also be used as a form of art on not only gadgets, but on the body as well?

Picking some of the best X-Ray inspired gadgets was going to be tough but we think we have found some that you might remember. The first was back in 2008 and will be remembered by those of you in the UK, it was the ‘X-Ray Multiroom Box and Remote’. The device was brought out in celebration of MTV’s spring schedule; more details at Tech Digest.

For those of you who would like to see what is hiding behind your kitchen cupboard doors, then you will love X-Ray Kitchen. We do not have a price for you on this, but we can be sure that it will not come cheap; more details.

The final gadget we have for you is the X-Ray Light. There are a series of designs that you can choose from, as long as you have a spare $229.00. Do you have any gadgets in the home inspired by the X-Ray design?

Google has once again surprised us with another of their now infamous homepage doodles. This time, the search giant is celebrating breakthroughs in technology and they have created a rather slick X-Ray design.

You are probably not aware, but the 8th November actually marks 115 years since the X-Ray was first invented. The honor goes to German physics professor Wilhelm Röntgen who discovered the use of an X-Ray way back in 1895.

Google doesn’t forget anyone though, and to celebrate, visiting their homepage will bring up a cool blue neon design. You may just think that this is a logo, but if you take a closer look, it’s actually an animation as you can see glows of radiation emitting from the letters.

The question is though, when was the last time that you had to have an X-Ray? Luckily, it has been over a few years since I last had one, but I always remember the strange experience seeing those X-Ray photos hung up on display. Let us know your experience of X-Rays below.

You can read a full overview at Wikipedia here.
