Finnish manufacturer Nokia is looking to return to some of its former glories in the coming months after losing market share to the iPhone and Android platforms. To achieve this it is hoping the Windows Phone platform will once again make its handsets more desirable to consumers. Now we have news of a possible UK release date for the Nokia Lumia 710.

The company’s flagship device the Lumia 800 has been available for a while now, but according to T3.com its lower specified sibling the Lumia 710 could be hitting UK stores on January 6th 2012. While the Lumia 800 gets a software update to fix some battery life issues, those who are looking for something a bit cheaper may consider the Lumia 710.

Nokia have yet to reveal an official release date for the handset but online retailer Digitalphone have begun listing the device. It is now amongst their ‘coming soon’ section of their website, and states the handset will be available within the first week in January.

It is most likely to mean the 6th for the launch timeframe and comes just two days before CES 2012 is due to begin. Just to remind you the Lumia 710 will come with a rear mounted 5-megapixel camera and a series of interchangeable fascias. It will be running the Windows Phone 7.5 Mango operating system powered by a 1.4GHz single-core Snapdragon processor.

You also have a 3.7-inch ClearBlack display and the device is capable of 720p video capture and 512MB of RAM. Will you be considering the Nokia Lumia 710?

Around a week ago we reported that the launch of the Nokia Lumia 800 had received a mixed response from various carriers ahead of a software update for the device. Now we have news that the Nokia Lumia 800 specs see high demand in the UK, and the device is sold out already.

This week has already seen analysts cutting sales forecasts for the company’s first two Window’s Phone handsets. BGR are reporting that it was originally thought Nokia would shift around two million units during the fourth quarter. That was then dropped to only 500,000 after early checks had shown lower than expected demand.

Despite all the analysts suggesting the handset was not going to do well it has been confirmed by Nokia that the handset has sold out in the UK. The company said in a statement that the Lumia 800 had got off to a strong start, and had achieved the “best ever first week of Nokia smartphone sales in the U.K. in recent history”.

Nokia didn’t go into specific sales figures for the device but the country has been a strong market for the company previously. Nokia has seen launches for a number of highly anticipated handsets in the country in the past, so if the Lumia 800 achieved the company’s best ever week it may have sold well. BGR have used the handset and said it was a good start for Nokia as it looks to make a comeback in the smartphone market.

Maybe many consumers are not going to give the Lumia 800 a chance based on previous attempts by the company, which may be a little unfair. Some have spoke of disappointment though that there is no option of expanding memory via microSD card as well.

Are you thinking of the Nokia Lumia 800 as a future handset?

Nokia has begun its fight back as it tries to turn the tide and stop falling sales of its smartphones, and have announced its first range of Windows Phone 7 handsets. Today at its Nokia World event in London the Lumia 710 and 800 Windows Phones get official with specs for both devices.

The Nokia Lumia 800 aka Sea Ray and the Lumia 710 aka Sabre have finally been revealed by the manufacturer. Both the handsets will be coming with a nice quick 1.4GHz single-core Snapdragon processors, with 512MB of RAM. Electronista are reporting the Lumia 800 looks similar to the Nokia N9, and comes with 16GB of storage and 25GB of free SkyDrive space.

The display is a 3.9-inch ClearBlack AMOLED offering, while the Lumia 710 has a slightly smaller 3.7-inch screen. The 710 also has 8GB of storage with both handsets running Windows Phone 7.5 Mango. Using the Windows Phone OS is a move away from Symbian, which has fallen behind the Android and iOS platforms.

Regarding the release dates for the handsets it has been announced the Lumia 800 will be available next month in the UK, France, Germany, The Netherlands, Italy, and Spain. Hong Kong, India, Russia, Singapore, and Taiwan should get the device by the end of the year. It is already available for preorder on the Nokia website for the equivalent of $585.

The Lumia 710 will be available in Hong Kong, India, Russia, Singapore, and Taiwan by the end of 2011 for around $515. Other markets are set to get the device in 2012. Do you like the look of the new Nokia handsets?

Nokia is looking to its tie up with the Microsoft Windows Phone mobile operating system to turn around its flagging fortunes. The company has already stated that it planned to launch a number of units before the end of this year. Now we have news that Nokia units running the Windows Phone OS could be hitting Europe next month.

An article over at Know Your Mobile is reporting that a release schedule has been leaked for an Italian carrier called TIM. It is showing a November release for an unnamed Nokia Windows Phone 7.5 device. The Nokia World event is due to take place later this month, and it has been confirmed that there will be a number of Microsoft people in attendance.

There has been reports of a number of different Nokia Windows Phone handsets already in the pipeline including the Sabre, Sea Ray, and the Ace to name but a few. Currently it is not known what handset that the Italian carrier TIM will be making available to its customers, but it is likely to be part of a Europe wide rollout of the new Nokia devices.

The pricing of the leaked schedule has been blocked out, so for now it is not known how much we can expect to pay to get our hands on the handsets. If a November release is on the cards it can’t be too long before we find out for sure.

Nokia will be hoping the Windows platform will reignite sales of Nokia handsets in the smartphone market, as it tries to claw back lost ground to the iPhone and Android.

While many consumers in the world get all excited about the imminent release of the next iPhone, other platforms continue to expand around the world. Today we can tell you that Windows Phone lands in India with a Mango flavor for consumers.

Microsoft held an event in the Taj Mahal hotel in New Delhi, and announced the news that the Windows Phone platform will finally arrive in the country. TechnoBuffalo are reporting in an article that a variety of Windows phone 7.5 Mango handsets will be reaching the country starting with the HTC Radar.

The smartphone that was one of the manufacturer’s first Mango handsets will hit the country as early as next week. It will be closely followed next month by the Acer Allegro and the Samsung Omnia W, while the HTC Radar will have in-built applications specifically for the Indian market.

The device will cost consumers ₹ 23,990, which is around $485 in the country, and the device features a 3.8-inch WVGA SLCD screen. It also has a 1GHz single-core processor, 521MB of RAM, 5-megeapixel camera, VGA front facing shooter, and 8GB of on board storage.

It is thought the Acer Allegro may have the bigger pull though, as it will be the first handset on the platform aimed at consumers on a budget. Besides the region specific applications on the Windows Phone handsets, Microsoft will open up the Windows Phone Marketplace to a variety of third-party apps for users in the country. These include SnapDeal and the publication Times of India.

Will you be getting a Windows Phone handset?

If you were hoping that Dell was going to commit more handsets to Windows Phone 7.5 Mango, then we have some bad news, which puts their future in phones in doubt. We do find this a bit strange, as the once number one computer maker was meant to be releasing an updated version of their Venue Pro, which was to be called the Wrigley.

It’s not hard to see why Dell does not want to commit to Windows Phone, as there seems no sense in having the likes of HTC, LG and Samsung all trying to compete with each other when Microsoft limits them to what hardware can be used. Going on past events, Dell has never been into the cell phone business as much as those rivals mentioned above, so it was only a matter of time before they cut ties with this market.

Having said that, SlashGear does have a feeling that Dell could reconsider this action when Windows Phone 8 Apollo gets released. However, we can see that this would be dependent on what Microsoft’s market share will be in the smartphone market. If I had to put my money where my mouth was, then I would say that this would not happen, how could a consumer purchase a phone from a company that is not in it for the long run?

That’s not saying that Dell will not support WP8, as they will more than likely bring a tablet to market. However, we recently concluded that their tablet would seriously lag behind the iPad 3. Towards the end of last year Dell took the number two spot from Acer in the PC market share, and we have to wonder if they have decided to concentrate on that side of their business? It would make sense, as they need to knuckle down and try to make gains on HP, who is still at number one.

We have been covering so much news about the hotly anticipated iPhone 5 recently that we’ve sometimes neglected other smartphones which are being launched from other manufacturers. Samsung already have one high-end device that has done the company proud in the market, which is the Galaxy S II. Now the company has launched its first Windows Phone 7.5 Mango smartphone, the Omnia W.

Samsung will be hoping for the same success with this device as they received with their powerful Android alternative, the Galaxy S II, although the Omnia W will be running an OS that is yet to be established as a market leader when it comes to phone software. They aim to aggressively challenge Apple’s iPhone by pricing their device competitively, as they believe this is where Windows Phone 7 failed.

They will price the Omnia W at €310 not including subsidies and tax. They are able to do this by sacrificing the higher specs and replacing them will more affordable yet still useful hardware in order to give the Windows OS a fighting chance. Analyst Geoff Blaber believes high specs devices priced directly against the iPhone was the wrong approach and was the cause for Windows Phone 7’s initial struggle.

The specs of the Omnia W are being compared to those of the HTC Radar, another Windows Phone 7.5 Mango device, as they are very similar. Although Samsung’s device is slightly less expensive and possesses a much faster processor compared to the Radar’s 1GHz, at 1.4GHz. It also has high-speed internet access, a 5 megapixel camera, 8GB storage, an 800 x 480 pixel resolution on a 3.7” Super AMOLED screen and weighs just 115.3g.

While the launch of these new Windows OS phones is looking promising, the company still has a lot of work to do in order to gain a significant share in the smartphone market. According to PCWorld they only managed to ship less than 1.6 million devices in the second quarter compared to Apple’s 19.6 million and Android’s 46.8 million in the same period.

What do you think of the Samsung Omnia W? Are you willing to give Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7.5 Mango OS a chance?

We have some important news for those of you with a Windows Phone 7 handset, as Microsoft has accidentally confirmed that the highly anticipated Mango software update will officially bring the platform version number to 7.5.

Microsoft revealed the details on one of their partner websites, as a screenshot provided by WinRumors shows this. The line containing the details 7.5 has now been removed by Microsoft so it’s clear that this wasn’t intended to be public knowledge just yet.

Just to refresh, the Mango update will add multitasking support for Windows Phone 7 devices, as well as Internet Explorer 9 and Twitter integration. Those are the only confirmed features so far, and Microsoft has told everyone to expect it to land later on in the year, no solid date yet sadly.

Are those new features enough for you, for you to consider switching to Windows Phone 7 compared to the likes of iOS, Android or Blackberry? A lot of you will say that WP7 is nowhere close to matching rival mobile software yet, but a few Windows Phone 7 users out there may think otherwise.

We recently told you about a survey stating that WP7 will overtake iOS by 2015, but do you think that will happen, realistically?

This maybe news which you may have already heard about, but for those that don’t, we have some important details for those who decided to pick up a Windows Phone 7 handset at launch last month.

We have recently told you about a planned update for copy and paste on WP7 devices, but now we have details on other forthcoming updates which are being tagged as ‘major’ – yes there is more than one update on the way.

According to this report from BGR, Microsoft are planning to two major updates to the OS, one which will happen next year, and the other at the end of 2012. We are hearing that the codenames for these updates are Mango (2011) and Apollo (2012) and that they could even be labelled as Windows Phone 7.5 and Windows Phone 8.

Furthermore, we even have brief details on what both updates will add to devices. The Mango update is said to include HTML5 and Silverlight support, while Apollo is apparently meant to add multitasking support for third-party apps, in-app downloads and more customization options for users.

Hopefully these updates will add a lot more features that just the ones mentioned above. Also, do you believe that there should be more than just one ‘major’ Windows Phone 7 update each year? Are you currently satisfied with the list of features you have on your chosen WP7 device or do you believe that Microsoft should add more?

We’ll update you if we hear any further details on the Mango and Apollo updates.
