A range of new laptops coming to the market will share something in common with the HTC EVO 4G and the Samsung Epic 4G, as they will have access to the WiMax super-fast wireless broadband technology. These new laptops will now benefit from the extensive increased coverage that Clearwire and Sprint has been working on.

You have to remember that you will need to stay in a WiMax area to get the full benefit of the technology built inside. That’s right, you will no longer have to have a USB dongle sticking out the side of your laptop any more. Gaining access to the 4G network is done with the help of the Intel Centrino 6250 WiMax, but this is an optional extra.

PCMag has been looking at 8 new laptops that will have access to the WiMax service. There are two laptops from Toshiba, two from Sony, and one each from Asus, Dell, Lenovo and Samsung. Prices start from $629.99 to $1,504.

Looking at the review ratings, it looks as though the cheapest model is the best buy. The laptop in question is the Sony VAIO VPC-EB33FM/BJ, although it is a budget laptop it has more than enough performance to hold its own.

Visit PCMag for detailed reviews on each of the 8 models.

Sprint are doing all they can to offer greater 4G coverage for owners of the Samsung Epic and HTC EVO, so have announced that Clearwire will extend to New York (NYC), Los Angeles (LA) and San Francisco on November 1, December 1 and the end of December respectively.

We cannot understand why Clearwire and Sprint have made these areas wait so long, as this is where a host of wealthy people live and spend huge amounts of money on the latest tech. However, according to an article on Reuters, these areas are seen to be a tough market to break as they have high demand on carrier’s networks.

As more 4G devices come to the market Clearwire and Sprint will face the same issues that AT&T has suffered with its 3G coverage. However, with continued investment they hope to be able to offer a greater service in the hope of gaining an edge of their rivals.

Although Sprint is just the fourth largest carrier in the U.S, it is well ahead with 4G technology than the likes of AT&T. However, Verizon is pushing ahead with its program, with 38 cities being connected to their LTE service by the end of the year. Do you think that Sprint and Clearwire will be able to stay ahead of AT&T with 4G coverage?

We still have a while to go until the IEEE makes its decision as to what the new standard for the 802.16m version of WiMAX will be. In anticipation of this, a few companies have already offered their support for what will be known as WiMAX 2– Intel, Motorola, and Samsung amongst others.

According to Businesswire, these companies will make certain that WiMAX 2 will be able to compete with the likes of LTE – this is the 4G standard that AT&T and Verizon will be using. Sprint currently works with Clearwater and favor WiMAX as its mobile broadband standard, but is still keeping its options open.

Sprint has said that they will issue detailed reports and delivery schedules in the coming months. The network carrier hopes to have its WiMAX technology in all of its production models by 2011. This will be at least 1-2 years early that LTE.
