Yesterday Mozilla released Firefox 7 for Windows, Mac and Linux (you can download it here) – today we will look at some of the improvements which have been made to the Google Chrome / Internet Explorer / Safari rival to bring it up to speed.

According to Mozilla’s official press release Firefox 7 manages memory much more efficiently than before, this will obviously improve overall performance – but it will be very noticeable for people out there whose computer is lacking in terms of RAM. But that’s not all, we are also told that clicking on menu items, opening new tabs and general navigation should be faster than before.

If you take your web browsing a little more seriously or you are a developer there are some noticeable changes ‘under the hood’, we are told that HTML5 games and animation should load faster thanks to hardware-accelerated Canvas speeds, also Firefox 7 supports W3C navigation timing spec API – this is a valuable tool for developers who want to ensure page load times are acceptable across different connection speeds. Finally we must mention Telemetry, this sounds complicated, but it is pretty simple – to cut a long story short it allows users to anonymously send browser data to Mozilla’s team to help with future development, don’t worry, it’s secure.

For those of you already running Firefox you will probably get a notification telling you that the update is available for install, if not open up Firefox, go to ‘Help’ and then ‘About Firefox’ – as long as you are running a pretty recent release Firefox should tell you that Firefox 7 is available, follow the on-screen instructions and soon you will be running Mozilla’s latest stable Firefox build.

As you can see Mozilla’s devs seem to believe that in terms of design Firefox is fine, however now they want to concentrate on refining their web browser’s performance and make it more appealing to web developers – we can’t help but think this is because of the strong competition which Google Chrome brings to the table.

Have you installed Firefox 7? If so, have you experienced any annoying issues since updating?

The browser Google Chrome’s use is growing at an incredible rate. Currently it has 120 million users utilizing the service. This figure has come from the Chrome Press Conference today. Chrome was launched back in September 2008 and back then nobody would have thought it would reach this number.

Looking back to just over 6 months ago Chrome had around 70 million users, so the growth of users is about 40%, which is massive. The browser is currently the 3rd most popular with IE and Firefox being above it but if it keeps growing like it is, especially with the Chrome OS on its way, then it may start staking a claim for that 2nd spot.

Chrome being in 3rd position means that it is imposing on the market and if it keeps growing will take up more market share according to their growth. I have only ever really used a few browsers, I use Safari on my iPhone, Firefox on laptops and previously in the company I used to work for we used Internet Explorer but there were reasons behind it. We used it because the others wouldn’t work with our Oracle – Siebel 7.7 based system and had great problems moving away from IE 6. This is one of the problems that large companies face when trying to migrate systems from one browser to another. If you want to download the Chrome Browser then click here.

Do you use the Chrome browser? What do you think of it? Is your company stuck on a specific browser? Let us know in the comments below.

Some Mozilla Firefox users are experiencing a problem which is extremely infuriating, basically the popular web browser crashes constantly no matter what web page is loading.

If you check out this link you can see that 26 users are reporting the same problem, it is unclear what is causing this problem, however there are millions of Firefox users out there therefore there maybe thousands of people affected.

The problem does not seem to be add-on related as starting the browser in safe mode still results in the crash, also updating to the latest version of the browser doesn’t fix the issue either.

The user who originally reported the issue is running Mozilla Firefox 3.6.12 and Windows 7 64-bit, therefore it may only be affecting users with this exact configuration.

We would love to hear whether the same problem is affecting you, if so let us know in the comments section beow and tell us a little about your computer configuration.

As we hear more regarding this problem we will do out utmost to keep you posted.

A few weeks ago we posted what we beleived was the first-ever public screenshot of Microsoft Internet Explorer 9, now we have a brief video showing the browser’s score when running the Acid3 benchmark.

For those of you who don’t know Acid3 is benchmarking website which test’s a web browser’s performance, especially in regards to the Document Object Model (DOM) and JavaScript.

The latest builds of web browsers such as Google Chrome and Apple Safari score 100/100 in the Acid3 test, whereas the latest build of Mozilla scores 97, therefore any score near this is pretty decent.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 scored just 20/100 in the test, however the video embedded belows shows latest Internet Explorer 9 scores 95 out of 100, this shows that Microsoft have really revamped things.

Back in March this year IE9 scored 55/100, in May it scored 68 and in June it scored 83/100, now that it has reached 95/100 it shows that Microsoft has been working hard to make Internet Explorer 9 the browser that IE8 should have been.

In my opinion Microsoft is lagging behind competitors in the web browser market, therefore I am keen to see what they have in store for us with their next major web browser release, Internet Explorer 9.

A recent article posted on ZDNet may well give us our first-ever look at the upcoming web browser, the screenshot has not been confirmed as Internet Explorer 9, however looks like a refined and simplified version of IE8.

You can see the screenshot at the end of this post, the browser looks like a Microsoft version of Google Chrome, there are simple back, forward, homepage, favorites and settings buttons, along with an address bar and a Bing search box.

It is thought that Microsoft will reveal the official Internet Explorer 9 beta at an event in San Francisco in mid-September, so for now we will have to make do with the small and unconfirmed screen that we have embedded below.

Do you like the look of the screen below? Will Internet Explorer 9 be step in the right direction for Microsoft?
