As you are probably aware the PlayStation Network was recently compromised by hackers and has resulted in some substantial downtime, recently MCV received some assurance from Visa regarding credit card fraud.

Firstly Visa say that customers do not need to cancel their cards, however they should keep a close eye on their accounts and if any unexpected activity takes place they should contact their bank. Depending on your bank’s terms you should get your money back.

MCV point out this statement from Visa opposes what a lot of security experts have been telling us, many say that fraudsters do not wait around, therefore you should act quickly. We think it is better to be safe than sorry and contact your bank and tell them of your worries, also it may be worth changing your email passwords etc just in case.

A recent article posted on Time suggest that people’s personal data was not encrypted, however credit card information was. One other assurance is that your card’s CVC or CSC number could not have been taken as Sony never asked for this.

We find Visa’s message quite strange, on one hand they say do not cancel your card, however they then go on to say watch out for strange activity. Why not just cancel your card to avoid any risk?

Have you cancelled your credit card due to the PSN hack?

A new pilot program which allows New Yorkers to pay for subway, bus and train fares with a quick wave of their iPhone has just been started by Visa.

Christina Warren of Mashable is reporting that Visa in partnership with New York City Transit, NJ TRANSIT and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, are testing both Visa payWave enabled smartphones and payment cards.

Instead of purchasing or refilling a Metro card travelers just wave their devices in front of a contactless reader. Visa is working with the Bank of America to also bring the technology to retailers in the city. The devices have a special sensor installed which can transmit payment information to card readers at fare gates. This will speed up queues at transit stations, and does away the need to buy a transit card.

The New York subway program is only deployed across 28 stops along the Lexington subway line, but if the trial proves successful will be expanded. The technology has been used by Visa in London, Istanbul, Kuala Lampur, Paris, and Singapore. Check the video below to see the technology in action.

Smartphones these days can do a lot of tasks, but one thing that has caught our attention is an iPhone case that will enable shoppers to do wireless payments, using the actual iPhone instead of a Visa card.

But how does it work? According to DeviceFidelity who build the case, it will use a microSD card which holds all the NFC circuitry requirements allowing you to make your payment and purchase.

One question though, why have DeviceFidelity only developed this for the iPhone when almost every single smartphone in the world has microSD capabilities?

Even so, there are plenty of other questions that can be raised about the technology. NFC can be put on to virtually any smartphone in production today, but will it work?

That aside, you can view a demonstration video here that is uploaded to YouTube. Do you think the technology will take off? Will you be using it?
