As everyone knows Nintendo are notoriously secretive about any new console that it is developing and leave the finer details till the latest possible time. Now when we look at the Nintendo 3DS we are wondering what the possibilities of video calling is?

Can you imagine having video calling on a handheld gaming device like that? It would be pretty innovative and would give Nintendo a new lease of “Coolness”. Nintendo are dominating the handheld market with their current DS models but with new releases consumers expect new features.

If you think of the iPhone 4 and how it has Facetime, that is a pretty cool feature. The thing that the new DS would need though is a front facing camera with the capabilities. This could be a real opportunity to offer more than just a handheld console.

Of course there are only rumors of the specs of this dinky device but we do know that it will have 3D gaming without the glasses which in itself is a cool feature. Please be assured that this is a rumor at present but if anything like this does get confirmed then we will be reporting on it. If you want to know more information on the Nintendo 3DS then head over to techradar.com where Adam Hartley has written an article by clicking here.

Let us know your thoughts on potential video calling on a Nintendo 3DS in the comments below.

Now that most of the top Android handsets have updated to 2.2 Froyo, it is now time to start looking at what new features 3.0 will bring. We have just learned that the Gingerbread update could come with Video Chat – this would certainly be something that users would want.

According to an article on Android and Me, Taylor Wimberly had a conversation with Andy Rubin about the possibility of video chat after saying that they are working on a solution to offer what desktop users already enjoy.

This comes as no surprise really, as a number of new Android handset now come with front-facing cameras, such as the HTC EVO 4G amongst others. The Apple iPhone 4 already uses this feature, which is called FaceTime, but there are limitations. Only those with another fourth-generation iPhone can use it, and you have to be connected to a Wi-Fi network – unless you have a jailbreak.

Wimberly also had a chat with partners of Tegra 2, and it seems that Google Android 3.0 Gingerbread will come with a host of other features, all of which will make us change how we use our handsets.

Is Video Chat something that you would use?

Video calling has been available for a while now, but were never that great; that is until Apple launched FaceTime for iPhone 4 users. Those with the fourth-generation iPhone have been talking away on their handsets loving it, but are limited in the way that they can only talk to those who also has the same handset.

However, iMovicha has finally launched its video-chat application that not only works on iOS but Android, BlackBerry, Windows/Windows Mobile and finally OS X. This is the ultimate cross-platform mobile video chat application.

That is not the best part; we all know that FaceTime can only work via a Wi-Fi connection; well iMovicha can do this through 3G as well. This means that you no longer have to be tied to being at home, the office or in a coffee shop somewhere.

We do not have to remind you that those of you with an iPhone 4 will have to jailbreak it. More details on this app can be found by visiting the Movicha website.

Apple Rumors in 2010 have been vast, and the latest includes a new iPod Touch 4G, iTV, and the continued wait for a White iPhone 4. Apple has a special press event on September 1, and a new Apple TV for 2010 (iTV) is at the top of everyone’s rumor list.

The UK market could have trademark issues thanks to the popular iTV channel, and if Apple’s iTV becomes reality then it will need to take some market share from cable / satellite, but what will it need to make this possible?

Gigaom believe TV-based video calls could be the answer to make “iTV” a success, which is much more than just TV show rentals for 99-cents. It’s Gigaom’s view that Apple’s new 2010 TV device could become a hobby if it doesn’t have something extra.

We would love to see apps optimized for TV, and some nice price bundles to make buying on Apple TV that little bit more attractive. The big feature would be “FaceTime” on Apple TV; this could make TV-based video calls in fashion and knowing Apple’s track record, they could start a big movement if it becomes affordable.

Gigaom predicts that TV-based video calling will increase from half a million today to 2.7 billion TV-based video calls in 2015; you can read more about their predictions in this article.

Would you use TV video calling more with the right device?
