All the talk at the moment is whether or not Apple’s new iPhone will be called the iPhone 5 or the iPhone 4S, but we have some very interesting rumors to tell you about now, and it affects Verizon customers. We’re hearing that the new iPhone may not have support for 4G LTE, but have dual CDMA and GSM modes instead.

Perhaps more importantly, these rumors have actually surfaced from Verizon’s CFO Fran Shammo, as he stated in recent comments at a Reuters technology summit that the next iPhone will be a dual-mode phone for both GSM and CDMA, obviously allowing for usage on AT&T and Verizon network frequencies.

Shammo didn’t specifically answer whether or not the iPhone 5 will have 4G LTE, but based on this report by Electronista, 4G LTE doesn’t appear to be on Verizon’s top priority for the next iPhone, since they already have a very healthy collection of 4G LTE Android handsets, such as the Thunderbolt, and the soon to be released Motorola Droid Bionic.

It will be interesting if this turns out to be true – how would you feel if the new iPhone doesn’t have 4G LTE data support? Is that a complete deal breaker for you, or are you not too bothered about enjoying faster than normal data speeds on your iPhone?

The next version of the iPhone looks more likely to arrive sometime towards the end of the year, and in the mean time we continue to get more speculation what the next handset will feature. Now the Verizon has the iPhone, will this mean the Verizon iPhone 5 will have 4G capabilities?

Brooke Crothers from Cnet recently spoke to Will Strauss who is President of wireless chip market research firm Forward Concepts. Tim Cook from Apple recently said “that the first generation of LTE chipsets force a lot of design compromises”.

Because of Cooks comments Strauss was asked why the iPhone 5 is likely not to have LTE chipsets. According to Strauss smaller chip designs and more integration will be needed before an iPhone is likely to have the feature.

Cook also said that LTE is currently immature and Strauss believes Apple is not at fault, but wireless manufacturers currently have no true LTE handsets available besides the HTC Thunderbolt, but that is a workaround. It don’t have a single LTE-3G chip, but has a LTE modem chip and a second 3G chip from Qualcomm for voice functions.

At the moment no one can do voice over LTE, including Verizon and currently Samsung is the number one provider of LTE chips, but they are mainly for dongles. Integrated chips are expected to be available by 2012 so Apple will be able to use them then.

So for now we will have to wait for technology to become available before we see a 4G iPhone, but with Apple and their track record you never know when they might surprise everyone.

Would you like to see a 4G iPhone 5?

Earlier today we told you about a survey that ChangeWave had conducted amongst iPhone 4 customers on AT&T and Verizon Wireless. The survey showed that AT&T customers had more dropped calls, so with this in mind would it mean more people choosing the Verizon iPhone 5 for call satisfaction after the AT&T reports?

The survey asked over 4,000 users about their thoughts on their cell phones, and both AT&T and Verizon customers were mainly satisfied with their service. But it was when the dropped calls percentage was compared the gap widened.

At the moment most Verizon iPhone 4 customers are pretty pleased with their new handset, but it has only been available since February so things could change after a longer period. Another thing to consider is as more people take up the Verizon iPhone 4, how will the network cope?

When a new iPhone comes out sometime this year many perspective purchasers may see the percentage of dropped calls on AT&T, and decide to hook up with Verizon Wireless. This could be dependent on the dropped call data not worsening on the carrier as it signs up more users.

Which carrier will you choose for the iPhone 5?

We have more details on the potential huge twist in the ongoing Apple iPhone 5 saga, as the latest rumors reveal that Apple are planning to delay the release of their fifth generation iPhone, in favor of a release later on this year so that they can include a 4G LTE chip inside.

We first told you about this possibility in a previous report here, so you can read that if you need a recap on the details. What we want to discuss is the implications this potential move has on other carriers, and obviously the backlash that it could create, although Apple will see it as a positive business move.

After finally getting the iPhone on Verizon after AT&T’s exclusivity period, it seems as if they want to enjoy their new partnership with Verizon while they can by releasing a new iPhone 5 with a built in 4G LTE chip. While this is obviously great news for Verizon customers, how would it make AT&T feel? – Inadequate perhaps like Samsung?

We still don’t know if Apple are planning to bring more than one version of their iPhone 5 to market, but it does seem likely that a 4G LTE version is on the cards eventually. Providing this goes ahead, it does also mean that the rest of the world has to sit back and wait while Apple press forward with their plans for a true 4G capable handset to compete alongside the HTC Thunderbolt and the Sprint EVO 3D.

If you are currently an AT&T subscriber and have been keeping a close eye on these developments, we want to know your thoughts on the situation. How would you feel if Apple are holding back on the iPhone 5 release, just to accomodate Verizon and their 4G LTE motives?

Later today Verizon Wireless will be making a huge announcement, at the moment we do not know what this will be, however rumors suggest that we will either see the HTC Thunderbolt 4G officially unveiled, or perhaps a Verizon iPhone 5 announcement.

Back in December Verizon began rolling out its 4G LTE network, now it is thought that they will begin announcing 4G smartphones, but what will they announce today?

The HTC Thunderbolt will undoubtedly be a welcome addition to Verizon growing list of high-end smartphone offerings, with impressive confirmed specs and a extremely desirable look I would imagine that this handset could become the most popular Android handset available from Big Red, however an Verizon iPhone 5 announcement would be much bigger news.

It would be fair to say that the AT&T iPhone 4 release didn’t go quite to plan, with reception issues and no white iPhone 4 release some customers have been extremely critical of Apple’s latest smartphone offering, therefore if Verizon were to roll out a new iPhone available in either white or black with no reception-related problems it would be have a massive affect on the smartphone market.

We would love to hear your opinion on the upcoming Verizon Wireless announcement, therefore feel free to answer the question below and share your thoughts in the comments section.

After months and months of rumors, speculation and pure frustration, it looks like we are finally going to get confirmation of the Verizon iPhone 4/5. Apple is due to hold a media event in New York City later today, where they are expected to announce the much-anticipated smartphone.

However, recent reports suggest that Verizon could well charge more than AT&T for the Apple iPhone. In fact, according to Neil Hughes over at Apple Insider, Mark Moskowitz – an analyst with J.P. Morgan – believes that Verizon could well charge between $20 and $30 more than AT&T for the Apple iPhone.

The steeper price tag he claims is because of the higher cost of CDMA wireless components. In order for the handset to be compatible with Verizon’s network, it must include an internal CDMA radio, which Moskowitz said is a more expensive component compared to the UMTS technology found in AT&T’s handset.

He went on to explain that if Verizon avoids any network performance issues both during and after a potential iPhone launch, then we could be looking at a multi-year growth spurt in iPhone sales in the US. Scott Moritz over at thestreet.com reports that 9 million+ Verizon iPhones are estimated to be sold this year.

If you are interested in watching the Apple event, then Joshua Topolsky over at engadget.com has provided a list of start times.

We now know two things about Verizon as we come to the end of 2010 and are about to start a new year, Apple is to up its production numbers for the iPad, but has had to reduce the number of CDMA Verizon iPhone units that it had planned to build. This is something that Apple Insider learned from WSJ.

Tim Ollason from OSM is unsure why Apple has reduced these numbers, but I believe that it could have something to do with a Verizon iPhone 5 not being as popular an idea as it once was – this could have something to do with the long wait or those waiting moving to Android?

There have been fears that iPad sales would falter now that Android tablets have already started to hit the market, but analysts believe that Apple must be expecting to have a strong end to the year with iPad sales – but do not expect any deals over Black Friday.

There are those who believe that 2011 will be a tougher year for Apple and its iPad device, and there could be some truth to that. Yes we know that there will be more Android tablets, and the start of Windows and webOS based tablet devices, but lets not right the iPad off just yet.

The iPad set the benchmark, and you can be sure come April – when the new iPad 2 is rumored to launch – Apple will have a new device that will set the benchmark once again.

It seems as if a new Verizon iPhone rumor emerges everyday, this time a CultOfMac article suggests that Verizon Wireless will be offering the iPhone 5 in Q3 2011, this is because of Apple’s current AT&T exclusivity deal and also to do with Verizon LTE network.

The CultOfMac article is entirely based on the journalist’s “old friend” who is now a “wireless consultant”, so whether you take all of this information all that seriously is entirely up to you.

Let’s start with reason one, the AT&T deal, the wireless consultant agrees that the AT&T exclusive contract runs out in July 2011, he says that the contract was agreed in Thanksgiving 2005 and started in July 2006, which was a year before the iPhone launched in 2007. If you check out the source link below you can see exactly how the iPhone was born and how all of the previously mentioned dates fit in with the timeframe.

Reason two is all based on how Verizon roll out their LTE network and the availability of low-power LTE compliant chipsets. CultOfMac’s source suggests that Verizon are planning to roll out their 4G LTE network across 38 major cities by the end of the year, however at the moment all LTE chips have a USB-embedded die due to power consumption, chipset manufacturers are working on chips for smartphones, but they won’t be available until the middle of 2011.

As you know Apple devices usually boast impressive battery life, therefore low-power chipsets are very important for the iPhone 5, let’s face we need long battery life as well as reliable and fast connectivity.

I must admit all of this information does add up and could perhaps mean that we will see the Verizon iPhone 5 in Q3 2011, however I have learned to stay skeptical as we heard very similar rumors regarding a Verizon iPhone last year.
