We have some major news to bring you now, as hot on the heels of AT&T’s 4G LTE plans, T-Mobile has just announced that they are upgrading their 4G HSPA+ to support blistering speeds of up to 42mbps in some areas.

The new speeds will only be available to select customers, but you’ll be pleased to hear that T-Mobile has already listed the full 55 markets that their new HSPA+ upgrade will cover. Markets include the likes of New York, Chicago, LA, Long Beach, Miami, San Francisco and much more. You can view the full list of covered areas over at BGR here.

Furthermore, T-Mobile also announced a new USB dongle which is required to access the new speeds. They are calling it the Rocket 3.0 data stick and it will cost you $99 to pick one up. It will be available from tomorrow, May 25th and will allow customers to make use of the improved speeds, providing they are in a supported area of course.

What are your thoughts on this major news? Up to 42mbps kind of makes a mockery of Verizon’s 4G LTE speeds doesn’t it? It will be very interesting to hear what Verizon think of this, perhaps they are planning a counter-announcement now as T-Mobile has definitely caught everyone’s attention. Will this speed boost tempt you into moving to T-Mobile, or are you still happy with data speeds from Verizon and AT&T?

When it comes to Verizon news it seems it’s been all about their 4G LTE, the high speed internet access has that it now offers has been hotly received by customers. That doesn’t mean it is flawless however with the main issue being the amount it takes the life from the battery.

A few weeks ago there was even an outage that left users 4G LTE free for over a day. Today we have news that as an apology Verizon will be offering mobile hotspot access for free for their HTC Thunderbolt and Droid Charge owners right up to June 15th.

Both the devices are 4G LTE capable and act as hotspots themselves. The deal that Verizon are offering will save users from paying the additional monthly incurs that you would normally get from using the high speed feature.

According to the article at IntoMobile, come June 15th the usual costs will be put back into place the same as before. If you’d like to know more about the deal or the devices themselves, check out the full article at IntoMobile by clicking the link above.

Do you think the deal is sufficient enough an apology? What do you think of the 4G LTE speeds? Let us know in the comments below.

Customers who use the Verizon Wireless LTE service have been experiencing some problems over the last twenty four hours. There has been a Verizon 4G network outage which affects anyone with a HTC Thunderbolt or a 4G modem.

Mark Raby from TG Daily is reporting that the issue to its high speed data network has been confirmed by Verizon. They have said they know what the cause is and are working to fix it. The problems began yesterday morning and affects owners of the only 4G handset currently on the network.

Users are left with a 1X data connection on their handsets, which is a really slow data connection similar to what was used at the start of the 2000s. The problems are also affecting USB modems and Verizon’s 4G MiFi devices.

The downtime originally affected users in the Atlanta area due to weather problems, but then expanded across the country. It now looks like that Verizon are starting to restore coverage, as Roger Cheng from The Wall Street journal is reporting the service is back in New York.

Have you been affected by the outage?

The HTC Thunderbolt on Verizon has been hitting the news for the wrong reasons recently. After the handset seemed to take an age to be finally released, many users have been complaining about the terrible battery life. Today we have a way for owners to turn 4G LTE off, and hopefully curing battery problems.

Many of you have been contacting us complaining about the battery life on the Thunderbolt, and you were not sure about paying $50 for the extended battery which was being offered.

Another problem was after installing the battery your phone case is now unusable. But an article over at Android Central has a method for turning off LTE on the handset.

The person who posted the information warns of the risks of turning off LTE, but has mentioned that in doing so has seen his battery life increasing to over eight hours on a full charge.

Even though this looks to cure battery life problems with the HTC Thunderbolt, wasn’t having a handset with 4G capability the main reason many people purchased it in the first place?

Use the link above if you want to try the option yourself and let us know how you get on with it.

So far in 2011 we have seen a lot of impressive smartphones unveiled, one of the most impressive handsets is the Verizon-bound HTC Thunderbolt, however many are frustrated with the lack of information regarding the Thunderbolt’s release date.

At the moment we are led to believe that Verizon Wireless’s HTC Thunderbolt will become available from March 10th, a lot of our readers suggest that they are fed up of waiting and if this date comes and goes without the HTC Thunderbolt being released they will give up waiting for this 4G LTE-complaint smartphone.

If sources are correct we should see a Verizon announcement one day this week where official release date information will be revealed, however this does not mean that the release is imminent, for all we know it may not hit stores until April / May.

Just over a week ago we posted an article suggesting that the reason for the HTC Thunderbolt’s release mystery and delay is related to its 4G LTE connectivity and battery life, it is thought that a firmware update will fix this, however we wonder how long it will take developers to pinpoint this problem, create a patch for it and test their fix, if this process takes more than two weeks (since when the problem was first announced) we can confirm that the HTC Thunderbolt will not be available until after March 10th.

Obviously it is nice to see that developers are keen to smooth out known issues before releasing this formidable smartphone, however consumers will not wait forever, answer the poll question below and feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section so that we can get some feedback on this matter from our readers, as usual as we hear official news from Verizon we will keep you posted.

We have some disappointing news to bring to those of you who were hoping to pick up Verizon’s first 4G LTE smartphone, as we’re hearing that the carrier is delaying the release of the HTC Thunderbolt, if reports are to be believed.

According to BGR, an internal Verizon document obtained by Droid-Life reveals that the handset has been delayed until further notice. The handset was due to be released on February 14th, but the document now reads ‘no ETA at this time’ – which is particularly worrying.

At the moment, we have no idea why Verizon has delayed the release of this highly anticipated handset, and don’t forget Verizon hasn’t informed the public about this yet since this is a leaked document we’re looking at.

Has HTC discovered a manufacturing fault with the handset, or are Verizon simply not prepared fully for launch? Hopefully it’s the latter and things will be back on course soon – we’ll keep you informed about this.

It looks as if Verizon are preparing to announce their highly-anticipated prices for their 4G LTE data packages, as the US carrier has just made a few changes to their current data packages, removing a popular $15 option in the process.

As reported from Phandroid, Verizon has altered their 3G data package prices, as the only option available to customers at the moment, is a $29.99 per month package, which will give customers an unlimited data allowance.

This means that the previous $15 per month option, which offered 150MB has been terminated by Verizon – seemingly suggesting that new 4G data bundles will be on the way soon. You can still get 75MB for $10, but this won’t apply to 3G phones and you’ll get charged another $10 if you go over the 75MB limit.

What are your thoughts on Verizon’s decision to remove the popular $15 per month bundle – are you disappointed about this? Considering that the carrier is charging $29.99 per month for 3G bundles, how much would you be willing to pay for an unlimited 4G data bundle?

We think no higher than $50 per month would be reasonable, but we’ll have to wait and see what happens.

While you may be sitting back and enjoying the festive period, there are still a lot of juicy tech news which is pouring out online and we couldn’t resist telling you about this latest one, related to Google’s next version of Android.

All the talk now is about OS 2.3 Gingerbread, and which devices will be receiving it, but now we have some potentially exciting details about Google’s ‘Tablet-specific’ Android OS called Honeycomb – destined to either be version 3.0 or 2.4.

According to a recent report by Digitimes, Honeycomb will be released during March, which will be the first time that a release period has been pinpointed. Of course, the date isn’t official but it’s always worth informing you when a new DigiTimes rumor gets out.

Digitimes were reporting on a few upcoming tablet devices by MSI, one of which will be equipped with Honeycomb, a Tegra 2 processor and is apparently due for release in April or May after Google brings out Honeycomb.

Either way, you don’t have to wait long for an announcement, as we’re guessing that this will come at CES 2011 in January, when Motorola will be announcing their new 4G LTE tablet on Verizon, also expected to be running Honeycomb.

What are your thoughts on the rumors? Do you think Honeycomb will come as soon as March?

We haven’t heard too many details on the previously leaked HTC Incredible HD handset, but it looks like HTC is preparing the handset to be their first entry in Verizon’s new 4G LTE network department.

We have previously told you about debut 4G LTE handsets for Motorola and Samsung, but now we have a new picture of the Incredible HD to show you, which also confirms that it will be HTC’s first 4G LTE-supported phone.

The picture has been obtained by Gizmodo, which shows the Incredible HD in the best quality seen to date. We previously reported on some other pictures of the device, which you can check out again here if you missed them the first time around.

On a side note, we’re a bit worried about the noticable scratch marks that you can see at the top of the device – after all, who wants to pick up HTC’s brand new device if it’s prone to damage? HTC will most likely be unveiling the HTC Incredible HD for real on January 6th – you can see a teaser on their website here.

What are your thoughts on the device – interested in getting one or not?

We recently brought you details on Motorola’s upcoming Android Honeycomb tablet which will finally make it’s official appearance at CES 2011, but now we have a few bits of information regarding Motorola’s participation in Verizon’s 4G LTE plans.

It is no secret that Motorola and Verizon have formed a very close partnership through 2010, culminating in the great sucesses in the lineup of Droid handsets which are still considered some of the best on the market now.

However, Verizon is now looking towards their new 4G LTE network and it is no surprise to hear that Motorola will also be part of their plans. As reported from Engadget, Verizon’s chief operating officer John Stratton has hinted that Motorola will be the first manufacturer to build a device which is 4G LTE compatible.

He didn’t mention any specific handsets, but Engadget believe that the rumored Motorola Olympus is likely to be a blueprint for a device on Verizon, since the Olympus is thought to be heading to AT&T first of all. We wrote a piece on the Motorola ‘Etna’ which you may want to check out.

What are your thoughts on Motorola having the first LTE device on Verizon? Are you a bit disappointed that HTC hasn’t got the nod or are you satisfied with Motorola?
