For years now smartphones have featured USB connectivity, however with ever-increasing storage capacities and the large file sizes associated with multimedia such as photos and videos it seems as if USB 2.0 is starting to show its age, well today we have some great news as it looks like future smartphones and tablets could boast USB 3.0 connectivity.

According to PCWorld.com the chief technology officer of the USB Implementers Forum, Rahman Ismail, has stated that we could well high-speed microUSB 3.0 ports will come to small devices such as tablets and smartphones early next year. Not only will this allow you to transfer data much faster between your device and your computer, but it will also allow you to charge your device faster as well.

We don’t have specifics in terms of performance, but we are told that we shouldn’t expect the same speeds achievable on a USB 3.0-compliant PC, instead 100MB/s speeds should be achievable (which equates to 800Mbps). This should mean that what would take 15 minutes to transfer over USB 2.0 will take just 1 minute and 10 seconds when using a mobile device’s USB 3.0 port. The only issue with this is said to be that power consumption will be higher than USB 2.0, but this isn’t a major issue in our opinion as people won’t be transferring files too regularly – especially with advances in cloud storage solutions.

As things progress we are sure that power efficiency will improve, so perhaps by the time microUSB ports hit smartphones and tablets we won’t have to sorry about it having such a negative affect on battery life, the good news is that even if it does drain your battery the charger will fill your battery faster than ever.

Whilst talking about microUSB 3.0 Rahman Ismail also suggested that standard USB 3.0 ports could become thinner, this will allow devices such as netbooks to be thinner once manufacturers stop giving their products VGA ports – so don’t be too surprised if the standard USB ports which we have used for the past decade or so soon become a thing of the past.

With CES 2012 currently underway there’s a chance that we may find out more about the future of USB 3.0 and devices which use the exciting microUSB 3.0 port – when we hear more so will you.

Back in July Jamie brought you pricing information on the PX-B120U external Blu-ray player by Plextor. Now we have news on Sony’s slim and portable BDX-5500U, which is another USB powered Blu-ray drive.

When is comes to first person shooter games you need to have a steady hand for making those precise movements. However, if you play games such as COD Black Ops on the Sony PS3, then you are limited with the dual-shock controller.

Thankfully help is at hand with the Eagle Eye USB adapter. Most of us will not notice certain imperfections when it comes to playing FPS games on consoles, but PC gamers will know that when it comes to precision – nothing beats a mouse and keyboard.

It is for this reason that those serious about games such as Call of Duty: Black Ops will want to view the video below of this awesome – if somewhat extreme setup. Just imagine how cool it would be to gain an advantage over your friends and get a number of kill streaks in a row? This will certainly be possible when using a keyboard and mouse.

The Eagle Eye from Penguin United can be found on Amazon for $59.99, this could have been at least $20 cheaper. Desz from TQcast believes that although the device is easy to install and precise, the slight lag in gameplay can often be a pain. If you have one then let us know what you think.

This is the World’s slimmest USB Bluetooth Dongle and while many laptops have Bluetooth these days, you will find thousands of old and brand new portable computers without this feature.

This is where Bluetooth dongle comes in handy, although many users hate the idea of having accessories sticking out of their computer. You may have USB hubs, expansion cards, wireless mice powered by USB adapters and other devices.

The last thing you want is a big stick on the side of your laptop to give it Bluetooth, and this is not the case with the World’s slimmest USB Bluetooth Dongle (AL325-A984). As you can see in the photos on this page, it sits pretty neat and tidy in a spare USB port.

USB Fever say “If this is not the world smallest USB Bluetooth Dongle, it should at least should be the second one” and they are right there, it’s tiny.

The USB Bluetooth dongle is compatible with Windows XP and Vista, it was easy to setup (no drivers needed) and simple to use with many Bluetooth devices. This is the smallest dongle we have used and it has no chance of being knocked and broke like some other Bluetooth dongles thanks to it’s tiny size.

Main Features Include:

Connect to your Cell phone, PDAs or PC for data transfer, networking or even dial up

Enables wireless Personal Area Network (PAN)

Supports Bluetooth voice (A2DP) / data

LED Indicator when Plugged

Driverless (for Windows XP and Vista only)

USB 2.0 compliant

Bluetooth 2.0 compliant

Super Tiny and slim

The world’s slimmest USB Bluetooth Dongle is priced at $14.99 on USBFever.com

At first look we thought this would just be a cool USB Christmas gadget that’s perfect for this time of the year, but after using it for a few days I found out it was a lot more especially to children.

My son is only 5 years old and he will not leave the USB Christmas Drumming Santa Claus alone, we have plugged the USB lead into our PS3 and laptop ports for power and then he just keeps pushing the button after each song to watch Santa do his thing on the drums.

If you have children then this gadget is highly recommended, it’s worth it alone just for the smile on your child’s face. Watching my son dance away to Christmas songs being drummed and played was great fun.

With the lights out in the room you can see the drums light up and the tapping noise made on the drums is amazingly in-time. We are sold on the Drumming USB Santa and that was only after using it first hand, way better than expected.

If you’re all grown up and love Christmas or gadgets then we are sure you will love the Drumming Santa as well or maybe you would want to show friends and family when they come over. You can buy this gadget and the Snowman version on usbfever.com.

When it comes to computers and gadgets I am a real fan and not only for being around them as part of my job for over 8 years but also for the love of technology.

This is the Hacked USB Flash Drive from IWOOT and there are so many reasons to love this gadget, while its hard drive space is just 2GB this was near impossible a few years ago for a gadget of this size. We were looking at MB not GB in this size.

Ideal as a gift for any gadget lover or someone that needs storage for files, photos or music and want something unique and different. As you can see in the photos, the cable is broken and that’s just how it’s meant to be.

If you know someone with a similar USB cable then you could replace it with the Hacked USB Flash Drive and play a little joke, although our favorite use is for quick storage and to get visitors speaking. In the last week the amount of friends and family that have said about the broken wired USB drive has amazed us.

They have said “did you know your USB cable is broken”, “what’s that” and if you tell them it’s a USB drive they have to pick it up in amazement. This is the perfect gadget for those that love to have what most others don’t.

As for functionality, the Hacked USB Flash Drive does just what it should and that’s act as a storage device and look odd. It’s a thumbs up from us, but maybe not for those that love everything so tidy.

Main Features Include:

Size: 11 x 2cm

Suitable for ages 14 years+

No software required

Compatible with PC or MAC

Requires a USB port
