We first heard news regarding the upcoming Transformers Universe MMO back in March this year, when Jagex Games Studio – UK-based developer of online games – and toy manufacturer Hasbro announced that they were joining forces in order to release the much-anticipated game. Now we’ve received word that beta testing is due to begin ‘very soon.’

As Robert Purchese from eurogamer.net reports, Kris Jones – the game’s executive producer – recently stated that beta testing definitely isn’t going to be too far away, considering the Transformers Universe game is due to be released in 2012. There is a team of 55 people currently working on the game, but that number will eventually increase to 70 Kris said.

Jones also confirmed that the Transformers Universe game will be taking a few nods – both thematically and visually – from the recent cartoon series, Transformers: Prime – The Animated Series. However, Kris wanted to make it perfectly clear that although they’ve taken a few aspects of the cartoon series, Transformers Universe is its own game.

One aspect of the license that the Transformers Universe game will definitely be embracing is the ability to transform into a vehicle. Not only will vehicles be an integral part of combat, they’ll also be used as a transportation aid. Jones said that the developer is currently working on what vehicles they want to offer in the game, although they can’t give a number at this stage.

Fans might also be pleased to know that robot characters will be heavily customizable in the Transformers Universe game. According to Jones, ‘having hundreds of parts to tweak is a definite target for them.’ Although Jones wouldn’t comment on whether the game would feature a level-based progression system, he did confirm that players would definitely progress.

He also revealed that combat would be team focused, and will be based on classes working together. Not only will the Transformers Universe game be aimed at newcomers, but also at people that grew up with the Transformers characters in the 1980s. We’ve embedded a trailer below this post so you can check the game out for yourself.

Are you looking forward to joining the upcoming Transformers Universe beta testing?

Computer peripheral manufacturer Razer USA has introduced some pretty impressive gaming accessories over the past few months including the Dragon Age II-themed limited edition DeathAdder mouse, the Star Wars: The Old Republic peripheral range (which includes a keyboard, mouse, headset and mouse mat) and Battlefield 3 / Mass Effect 3-themed gaming accessories.

What makes the Dragon Age 2-themed DeathAdder mouse stand out from the others is the fact that it comes with a red dragon and a red II etched onto the top. What’s impressive about the Star Wars: The Old Republic gaming accessories on the other hand is that they all come with interchangeable Sith Empire and Galactic Republic faction icons (you can read more about them here).

Today however we have news that will interest all you Transformers fans out there. According to Andrew Freedman over on the pcmag.com website, Razer has just unveiled its new Transformers 3 Collector’s Edition gaming peripherals. The new Transformers lineup consists of three different products: a laptop case, a dual-sided Razer Vespula mouse mat and a series of Razer DeathAdder mice.

First up is the series of DeathAdder mice, which come in Bumblebee, Optimus Prime, Shockwave and Megatron-themed color combinations, each being branded with the Decepticon or Autobot logo. The Transformers mice – which can be purchased for $69.99 from the manufacturer’s website – are designed for ergonomic, right-handed use and include a response time of 1ms and 3500 dpi.

Meanwhile, the Transformers-themed Razer Vespula mouse mat – which costs $44.99 – features two sides that gamers can choose from: a speed-increasing surface that features Autobot leader Optimus Prime and a side with a surface that is meant to increase control. The second side features an image of Decepticon leader Megatron. It also comes with a gel-filled wrist rest for added comfort.

The final product on the list is the Transformers laptop case, which holds laptops up to 15-inches. The cases feature a hard plastic shell, with padding on the inside for added protection. They come in exactly the same color schemes as the mice: yellow, red, purple and silver, and come with either the Autobot or Decepticon logo. The cases aren’t available at this stage, but do carry a price tag of $49.99.

Unfortunately the Transformers 3 Collector’s Edition gaming peripherals are only available in North America. Would you buy any of the Transformers-themed accessories?

The High Moon Studios-developed Transformers: War for Cybertron game was quite well received when it launched back in June last year, with many reviewers describing it as the best Transformers game to date. So when the critics heard that High Moon Studios was returning to develop the recently released Transformers: Dark of the Moon movie tie-in game, they of course had high hopes for it.

However, judging by some of the recent reviews, it looks as though the Transformers: Dark of the Moon game doesn’t quite live up to expectations. For example, Justin Boot from the honestgamers.com website gave the Transformers: Dark of the Moon game a rather disappointing score of 5/10. Justin says that although the game does have some interesting ideas, it doesn’t actually go anywhere with them.

Another point Justin makes is that although the game does provide players with a lot of variety (what with being able to play an assortment of characters), the actual story is unfulfilling and extremely short. The game has quite a few downsides to it in Justin’s opinion, including levels being too short and simplistic, objectives being too easy and the fact that combat can be a bit chaotic and difficult.

Meanwhile, Dave Ernst from ripten.com gave Transformers: Dark of the Moon an overall rating of 6/10, stating that the game is seriously let down by its level design and visuals. Dave says that although the single player campaign is very playable, it is over far too quickly. Another disappointing review score comes from Mitch Krpata over on the joystiq.com website, who only gave the game 2 out of 5 stars.

Mitch states that although the game is way too short and has badly placed checkpoints, occasional slow down and constant loading interruptions, the general presentation is of a higher quality compared to other movie-based games. The final review we looked is by Rick Marshall over at multiplayerblog.mtv.com, who says that there are a lot of similarities between Transformers: War for Cybertron and Dark of the Moon.

Not only does Rick praise the Dark of the Moon game for borrowing some of the best elements of the War for Cybertron title, but also for the fact that the Transformers in the new game are the best they’ve looked so far and that players have a choice of three different robot forms. At the same time Rick criticizes the game for being too short and slightly repetitive.

You can read the full reviews via the links provided. Have you played the Transformers: Dark of the Moon game yet? If so, what do you think of it?

We have some really exciting news now for all you Transformers fans out there, as UK-based MMO developer Jagex and toy manufacturer Hasbro have just announced that they are joining forces, and will be releasing a new Transformers-based MMO.

However, it looks like we’ve got a bit of a wait for the game to arrive, as according to Kris Graft at gamasutra.com they won’t be releasing it until 2012. Jagex is best known for its hugely popular free-to-play browser-based MMO RuneScape, which was launched back in 2001.

Under the new partnership with Hasbro, Jagex will be releasing the Transformers MMO in Latin America, North America, Australia, New Zealand and Europe. Although Jagex CEO Mark Gerhard didn’t reveal any details, he did promise that the game would be action-packed.

Asia on the other hand is getting a Transformers MMO of its very own. Chinese online game developer NetDragon partnered with Hasbro last year, and will be releasing their title sometime this year. Don’t forget you also have the Transformers: Dark of the Moon game to look forward to.

Are you a Transformers fan? If so, which game are you looking forward to the most: Transformers: Dark of the Moon or the MMO?
