The CPSC product recalls roundup for February 2011 is alarming for many reasons, but the major one is because of the amount of them. While looking on their website we have counted 34 recalls – that’s around 1.4 a day, as the month is not even over yet. How many more can we expect to see over the next four days?

We can easily see that some stand out more than others, this is because of the sheer amount of recalled items. They range from the tens to hundreds of thousands. Some of the recalls that we hate to see are those that can affect the safety of a child, so seeing strollers and cribs appear on that list is not just upsetting for us but for all those parents affected as well.

The most recent recall is the B.O.B. single and double strollers, which saw 337,000 being recalled in the US and 20,000 in Canada just yesterday. The reason was due to an issue with the drawstring on the <s>real</s> rear of the stroller, as it could end up catching around a child’s neck and <s>chocking</s> choking them, more on this here.

On February 16th the Burlington Basket Company had to recall 500,000 Bassinets due to a <s>fire</s> fall risk. If you are unable to fully align the cross-bracing rails in the locked position, then the product could collapse, which could then lead to the child falling to the floor. This is certainly an alarming one, and you can understand why this recall was a serious one. More details.

AmerTac had to recall about 261,000 LED Night Lights, as in some cases they could short circuit and then overheat, which could then lead to people being burnt or even a risk of fire. The recall took place on February 9th, and consumers were asked to contact the company to get their full refund. More on this story can be found here.

February 8 was considered a bad day for Lasko, as they had to recall 107,500 portable electric heaters due to a poor electrical connection. Again, this product could overheat posing a fire hazard. There have been no reports of injuries, just burns to floors or carpets, more details.

These are just a handful of the recalls throughout February; others include the Ford F-150, a number of Honda vehicles, IKEA cribs, Dorel car seats and many more.

Every year there are thousands of recalls, but 2010 has not been a good year for the quality of toys. Looking over a complete product recall list of these gifts for children, it is clear that some of them will not be on any Christmas gift list – and for good reason would you not agree?

One of the most recent toy recalls were on a range of Fisher Price products, which totaled more than 10 million toys. These ranged from trikes to high chairs, all with a range of different faults. One of the most worrying was where a valve was said to come off an inflatable ball; this led to incidents of children choking.

Kristen Ryan from About.com has compiled a complete 2010 toy product recall list, with the Spider-Man and Iron Man Flashlights being the first on her list. These were recalled due to the bulb getting too hot, which could result in a child getting burned.

One that I was not happy to read about was the Munchkin Bathtub Subs recall. It was found that the valve on the bottom of the inflatable could cause lacerations; there were reports of 19 injuries to children’s genital area.

For the complete list visit About.com.

The most extensive list has to be from the TIA, just looking at the toy recalls from January to October was shocking, and that’s without taking November into consideration. The site tells you how many units were recalled, why and what solution they found to solve the issue. Let us hope that no more are recalled before Christmas – would not want to take a gift back that you have already bought for a child.

We have a word of caution for shoppers looking to pick up a collection of childrens toys and other related products over Black Friday, as consumers have been warned to look out for items which could be unsafe for young children to use.

The warning comes after toy giants Fisher Price issued a huge recall recently, which resulted in 10 million of their toy products being recalled over safety hazards. If you read the story at the time, you’ll know that the recall affected popular toys such as Tough Trikes toddler tricycles and Fisher Price high chair products.

According to the CPSC ( Consumer Product Safety Commission), Rollerblade USA rollerblades have also been recalled recently, so if you see any of these products on sale over Black Friday, you are probably best to avoid them.

If you are worried about potential safety risks on some toy products, you can take a daily look at the CPSC website here, which will contain all the recent recall information that you require, as well as archived information for previous recalls.

We have a video below to show you now, which gives consumers a few tips on how to get smart on toy recalls. Have a look and let us know your thoughts on the situation.
