The addition of new routes to Kinomap Trainer, an app that enhances indoor training sessions on a treadmill, cycling or rowing machine, means that anyone can now virtually cycle the Tour de France or run the London Marathon.

Kinomap Trainer is a fitness app that offers synchronised video playback, enabling users to train at home or in the gym against pre-recorded, GPS-located outdoor routes. With the addition of sensors (speed & cadence) and an ANT+ receiver, users can sync the video footage to their own workout and measure their progress. Through wireless data transfer, the smartphone or tablet receives the rhythm, speed and stride power being applied and compares it to the video, with a map displaying a moving icon that shows the user’s position in either a terrain or satellite view.

Additionally, a multiplayer mode allows users to train with up to four friends, each with their own avatar on the map and voice chat to allow full interaction.

The ever-expanding selection of cycling, running and rowing routes submitted by Kinomap Trainer’s growing community gives any fitness fan the opportunity to see how they would fare on some of the most well-known and challenging routes from around the globe, including a bike ride through the Arizona desert, rowing past the Eiffel Tower or a sightseeing tour around Disneyland. You can find the Kinomap Trainer app on Apple’s iTunes store.

Although there are probably many of you that will be sitting down to watch the 2011 Tour de France – which started on July 2nd with the 1st stage taking place at the Passage du Gois – annual bike race over the next three weeks, others will prefer to actually get out and do a bit of cycling themselves. Either way, there are plenty of cycling-related iPhone apps that will help you along the way.

One such app is Bike Doctor, which according to an article over at pcworld.com helps cycle owners do their own repairs and maintenance. Tapping on the ‘Bike’ button in the Bike Doctor app – which has already been downloaded more than 6,700 times – will bring up an image of a bicycle. Tapping on the part of the bike they are having problems with will then display a list of repairs.

The app will even tell you how to clean your bike correctly without damaging it. The Bike Doctor app currently features 24 highly-detailed bike repair tutorials, with more coming at a later stage. Another similar app is Bike Repair, which comes with 48 detailed photo repair guides and explanations for 66 bicycle problems. A point worth noting is that Bike Repair also costs less than the Bike Doctor app.

Think you know everything there is to know about the Tour de France? Well now you can test out your knowledge with the Le Tour Quiz app. The Tour de France All Access application on the other hand will enable you to follow every stage of this year’s event live on your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad. Users will be able to keep a track of the peloton in real-time, with an interactive map that displays every rider’s position on the course.

Tour de World 2011 is another great cycling-related app that’s worth downloading. The app will allow users to follow more than 200 Cycling Twitter feeds, as well as provide links to the top cycling news websites. Meanwhile, the Tour de France 2011: The Official Game (and HD version) enables you to become the manager of your favorite team, and become a legend by leading your team to victory.

Other cycling-related apps mentioned over on the pcworld.com article include Cychosis – Cycling Journal, a journal and log for cyclists, Team RadioShack, which will provide you with up-to-date news and exclusive behind-the-scenes coverage of the Team RadioShack cycling team, and Cycle Tracker Pro, which turns your iPhone into a feature-rich GPS-enabled cycle computer.

You can read more about the aforementioned apps over on the pcworld.com link. Are you watching the 2011 Tour de France?
