There is a view among some people that PC gaming is a thing of the past, and it’s the PS3, Xbox 360, and next-generation consoles that rule the gaming world. This line of thought could not be more wrong, and you only need to look at games like Skyrim to see the many extras – mods is one reason – you get by gaming on a laptop or desktop PC.

Toshiba want to entice laptop gamers with the new 3D Qosmio X870 laptop, which is “turbo-charged for games and movies“. The main features include Harman speakers to give the user more immersion, a 17.3-inch 3D LED display with full high definition for the best visuals while gaming, and also a next-gen NVIDIA GPU for some of the best graphics on a laptop.

We’ve included a quick look at the main specs for the Toshiba Qosmio X870 below, although those that want to really understand Toshiba’s “most advanced gaming laptop” yet should see the full press release via this PDF. The release looks at how entertainment is a new dimension, and that the connectivity and storage is designed “without compromise“.

What do you think of these specs, and can you see anything missing from this gaming laptop? You might also want to see some details on the Medion Erazer X6815 gaming laptop, which we gave a hands-on review towards the end of last month.

If you are planning to pick up a new tablet this year, one device that is inevitably top of the list for many consumers is Apple’s upcoming iPad 3. However, you just know that there are going to be plenty of alternatives, and one of which could be the latest effort from Toshiba.

We have had the ASUS Transformer Prime hit the market to rave reviews, while an upcoming quad-core tablet from Lenovo is also the subject of regular interest as consumers weigh up which tablet to buy in an already hectic market.

CES 2012 kicks off this week of course, and many tablet manufacturers will be showcasing their latest products as they see the event as the big opportunity to tempt consumers into a purchase and perhaps change consumer perception that the best tablet on the market is Apple’s iPad. With this in mind, Toshiba has just announced that they will be unveiling two new tablet computers at CES, one of which they are touting to be the ‘world’s thinnest and lightest tablet’ and the other one tablet which is said to be waterproof, as reported from Phandroid.

As for the thin model of the two, Toshiba are calling it the Excite and it will debut at CES 2012 with the model name of AT200. The device will feature a staggering 7.7mm of thickness and will carry a weight of just 558 grams. Rumored specs include a 10.1-inch 1280×800 HD display, a dual-core 1.2Ghz processor, a 5 megapixel camera with 2MP front-facing camera and storage options of either 16 or 32GB.

The hardware specs are nothing to get excited about of course, but as seen with Apple’s Macbook Air, this device could become very popular indeed for its slimline and lightweight dimensions. Just to put that thinness in perspective for you, the Toshiba Excite is thought to be 1mm thinner than the iPad 2 and 0.79mm thinner than the Samsung Galaxy S II. Also worth mentioning is that this device will ship with Android Honeycomb, but will be upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich later on in the year.

Also coming from Toshiba at CES 2012 is a waterproof tablet which is thought to be equipped with an OLED display screen. Further details are unknown at this point, but we don’t have long to find out what this device can actually do and just how impressive the waterproof aspect of it really is.

Are you considering the Toshiba Excite in your plans to buy a tablet this year, or is it still about the iPad 3 which is rumored to be equipped with a A6 quad-core processor?

The majority of new HDTV sets being released recently are of the 3D variety, but many people avoid the technology because of the need to wear glasses while watching the TV. If there are a few of you all want to watch the 3D content the expense can go up as more sets of glasses are needed. We have seen Nintendo bring out the 3DS that doesn’t require such glasses, and now the idea is moving to the big screen as well. Glasses free 3D TV from Toshiba is tipped to be landing in the US during Q1 2012, but could be pricey.

According to a report the company is planning to make available glasses-free 3D TV to US consumers during the first quarter of 2012. It would be the first device of its kind in the American market, and will be similar to sets from Toshiba in both Germany and Japan.

These were released back in December in respective countries, and the 55LZ2 retails for over $10,000 in their currencies. A Toshiba representative has revealed that the US version would be similar to what is available in the two countries, but couldn’t reveal the model numbers or screen sizes, except that they will be big.

Both the versions found in the European market and Japan use the 55-inch 4K resolution screens, but in 3D mode this is limited to an effective resolution of 1,280 x 720 pixels. Toshiba is set to showcase an improved prototype at CES 2012 on Sunday in Las Vegas. It is thought there are some differences between the model that were shown at last year’s show.

Would you get a glasses free 3D TV if the price was right?

While the iPad continues to dominate the tablet market, it doesn’t stop various companies bringing out worthy looking alternatives. Some have fallen by the wayside or seen prices discounted to shift inventory. Today we can tell you the Toshiba Regza AT700 the world’s thinnest tablet has been revealed in Japan.

The 2011 CEATEC event began in Japan with Toshiba announcing their new AT700 tablet, and according to TechRadar it looked similar to its other device the AT200. The AT700 could be a tablet that is focusing on the Japanese market, but could also find its way around the world as well.

It has a very slim form factor at only 7.7 thick and weighing only 558g from its 10.1-inch display. There are a number of connectivity ports available, and the device will come running Android 3.2. It also has Resolution+, five megapixel camera, and an audio enhancer and noise equalizer.

Toshiba said “We are transcending the boundaries between PC and TV”, but will only happen if you purchase other Toshiba devices such as a TV. For instance you can stream video content from a Toshiba Blu-ray tablet to the tablet, or access PC data from the AT700.

The company is keeping sales figures for the device at a realistic level though, and said they expect to shift over one million units globally. It also feels it share of the tablet market should go up to ten percent along with similar figures for its TV range.

It is expected to release in Japan during December, but pricing and availability around the rest of the world isn’t currently known. Do you think the Toshiba AT700 will do well?

When we introduced our readers to the Fujitsu-Toshiba au IS12T we were blown away by the fact that it featured a 13.2 megapixel camera on the rear, however if you were not impressed by the fact that it runs Windows Phone 7 we have some great news for you – another similar smartphone has been revealed, but this runs Google Android.

This smartphone is part of Fujitsu-Toshiba’s IS Series, it is called the Arrows Z ISW11F and it features a dual-core 1.2GHz Texas Instruments OMAP4430 1.2GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of ROM, a 4.3-inch 720p LCD display, a 13.1 megapixel camera on the rear (with autofocus and capable of 1080p HD video capture) a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera and a waterproof body. In terms of connectivity it boasts WiMAX, WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, GSM, CDMA and there is also HDMI-out and a microSD memory card slot.

In our opinion the Arrows Z has quite a desirable design, there will be pink, black and white variants available and it will measure in at 64 × 128 × 10.1mm (weighing 131 grams) – check out the images below, do you think it is a nice-looking smartphone?

You can find out a little more about this smartphone over at TechCrunch – we are told that it is headed to Japan via KDDI and will cost 525 yen, however currently there is no sign of a release anywhere else on the globe – but we would certainly love to see it shake up the European and American smartphone market – would you?

When Apple revealed the iPad 2 to the world back in March many of us couldn’t believe just how thin it was, for a while it held the accolade of being the thinnest tablet out there, however at the annual Google I/O conference Samsung showcased the Galaxy Tab 10.1 which was even thinner than Apple’s tablet – since then we have not seen anything thinner, that was until the Toshiba AT200 showed up late last week.

We spoke about the Toshiba AT200 in some detail here and told you that it was in fact thinner than the iPad 2 and Galaxy Tab 10.1 – now we thought we would look at dimensions and weight in some more detail. All of these tablets feature dual-core processors and 10.1-inch displays, therefore this comparison should be quite interesting.

Let’s start with the iPad 2, this groundbreaking tablet measures in at 241.2 x 185.7 x 8.8 mm and weighs 601 grams (WiFi model) or 613 grams (WiFi + 3G model), this is a vast improvement over the original iPad and Apple pushed the fact that it was thinner than its last tablet heavily – perhaps this is why Samsung worked so had to make the Tab 10.1 even thinner.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is lighter than the iPad 2 at 565 grams (with both WiFi and 3G connectivity), it is longer than the iPad 2 at 256.7 mm, but shaves of over 10 mm in width at just 175.3 – in terms of thickness it is 0.2mm thinner than the iPad 2, this gave Samsung’s tablet some bragging rights, however Toshiba has now spoiled this by revealing the Toshiba AT200 to the world.

In terms of dimensions the Toshiba AT200 is smaller and lighter than the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the iPad 2 in every way (almost). It measures in at 256 x 176 x 7.7 mm and weighs just 558 grams. As you can see it is 0.7mm wider than the Galaxy Tab 10.1 – but we don’t think that this measurement really matters a great deal, what matters is the fact that it comes in 0.9 mm and 1.1 mm thinner than the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the iPad 2 respectively.

Now before people say to us “just because it’s thinner, it doesn’t make it better” we will clearly state that we know this, what is interesting is just how thin such advanced devices are becoming and how companies such as Samsung and Toshiba are competing with Apple’s strong reputation – we would love to hear your opinion on a few matters.

Firstly, how thin can a tablet become before it has an adversed affect on build strength? Secondly, do you think Apple’s next tablet will be thinner than the AT200?

Toshiba has just announced a new ultrabook series, this is the Toshiba Portege Z830 series and if you check out the official press release you will see that Toshiba are marketing these models towards people who want “Supreme Portability and Enhanced Functionality at Affordable Price”.

We are told that prices will start at under $1000, however as you would expect there will be plenty of upgrade options available to you – all variants will feature 2nd generation Intel Core processors, weigh less than 2.5 pounds and are just 15.9mm thick, we are told that this makes the Z830 series 40% thinner and 20% lighter than the popular R830 series. You can see just how compact the design is below.

We do not have a full breakdown of technical specs for different price brackets, however we can confirm that that the 2nd-gen Intel Core processors will be backed up with DDR3 RAM and solid-state drive options. When we hear more regarding tech specs we will keep you posted – you may be able to gain a little more insight here. The image below appears to show 2 x USB ports on the back of the laptop (one of which appears to be USB 3.0), also there is HDMI-out, an Ethernet port and VGA-out. Other images also show a memory card slot (SD), standard headphone and microphone jacks and a built-in webcam.

In terms of features worth mentioning we were impressed by the spill-resistant LED backlit keyboard, its Hi-Speed Start technology (fast boot up) and USB Sleep & Charge technology – also the laptop’s stereo speakers should sound great thanks to Wave Audio’s enhanced audio technology.

The Toshiba Portege Z830 Ultrabook will become available in November and as previously mentioned prices should start at below $1000, we like the design, however until we hear more specifics we can’t really tell you whether the Z830 will be value for money, we will have to keep you posted.

Most television manufacturers are making a big push into 3D technology as they try and get consumers to make the switch. The majority of new TVs coming to the market are 3D capable, but many consumers are ignoring them because of the cost, and the fact you have to wear glasses. This can become expensive if the whole family wants to watch content in 3D. But now the Toshiba 55-inch ZL2 TV looks to change all that, as glasses free 3DTV arrive.

Toshiba has showcased its new 3DTV at the IFA event in Berlin, and according to Electronista the set combine’s glasses free 3D with a display of 3,840 x 2,160 resolutions. It is not the first glasses free TV, but it is the first of this size that doesn’t need active shutter 3D glasses.

The ZL2 uses face-tracking technology instead, and can also convert 2D content to 3D. It promises to allow viewers to enjoy 3D images in a variety of positions around the screen, and to offer up to 9 different viewing positions. The unit detects viewer’s faces and adjusts the lenticular lenslets that create the 3D effect as needed.

Stereoscopic concept is used to provide two offset images to each viewer. Content is up scaled to 4K resolution via the TVs CEVO engine and Toshiba’s Resolution+ image enhancement tech. There is also an Auto Calibration feature that has a USB connected measuring sensor to achieve it.

Owners will also have the Toshiba Places feature that allows users to access the likes of YouTube, Facebook, and the BBC iPlayer. Multiple users can have their own settings on the TV thanks to the Personal TV option.

Users can also control the set from their smartphone thanks to Wi-Fi and a free remote control application for iOS. Owners can also record content to a connected USB drive via the recording option. There is a built-in Freeview HD tuner, and is also DLNA and Windows 7 compatible. You will find four HDMI ports, two USB port, and a built-in sub-woofer supplements the speakers.

The ZL2 is thought to be hitting Europe towards the end of 2011, but no information on pricing or release dates for the rest of the world have been announced. Would this set make you decide to finally get a 3DTV?

If you are one of the customers who has recently purchased the Toshiba Thrive tablet, then you are in for some good luck today as Toshiba has dished out an update that addresses some nagging issues that may have had you scratching your head in dismay.

The Toshiba Thrive has not been on the market for all that long, so it is nice that Toshiba has listened to its users of the tablet, and have released an update that fixes the so called coma problem.

According to some users, the Toshiba Thrive was experiencing problems when the power button was pressed to go into sleep mode. But the real issue is that it never actually woke up when the power button was pressed again.

Lucky enough for you, if you did experience this issue and have got the Toshiba Thrive to wake up again, a simple download can fix this problem via the Toshiba Service Station utility application that can be found on your Toshiba Thrive unit. A Toshiba spokesperson released this statement: -

“A limited number of Thrive Tablet users have experienced a Resume issue when in Sleep mode. Toshiba has released a software update to resolve this issue, improving the sleep-and-resume performance, as well as enhancing the multimedia playback capabilities of the device. The software update can be downloaded through the Toshiba Service Station utility app found on the Thrive Tablet.”

Obviously, if you still haven’t got your Toshiba Thrive to wake up from its coma, a simple battery pull can help restore your tablet back to working order so you can download the update which should fix the sleeping disorder.

The update also comes with some minor multimedia playback enhancements, of which we don’t know too much about but at least you can stop your Toshiba Thrive from refusing to do anything apart from sleep on the job.

Were you one of the unlucky ones to have this happen to you? Did the update fix this? Let us know in the comments below.

Since the rise of the Apple iPad, nearly every electronics company such as Acer, ASUS, Motorola, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, Toshiba and many more have all brandished us with their own take on the tablet industry. Lenovo has now added their contribution to the ever growing list of available tablets with the IdeaPad K1, so we here at Product Reviews will give you a snapshot to see if it stands up to the test of time.

Lenovo were one of the first companies to release a tablet, albeit only in China with the LePad. But just last month, they announced two up and coming Honeycomb slates that would be available on the US market; the IdeaPad K1 and the ThinkPad.

Where as the ThinkPad is tailored more towards the business end of the stick, the IdeaPad K1 is aimed at the mainstream, but does it deliver? You can see a previous article with full specs, features, dimensions and accessories here.

Android tablets, such as the IdeaPad K1 make up a vast percentage of the slate world now, but Lenovo really have put there name out there and have such an avid following that we bet the company could have essentially slapped its name on a plain-Jane black slab and waited for loyal fans to line up, says Engadget.

So what’s good about the IdeaPad K1? Engadget took a long hard look at the tablet and said that it is aggressively priced. By this they mean that they really have tried to sink the knife in to Apple’s iPad 2 and Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 by undercutting the price of their 32GB model compared to that of the latter two by $100, costing only $499.

Looking closer at the design, it is said to be “cute.” Not tacky, just playfully cute. At 1.65 pounds (0.7kg), the K1 is heavier than most tablets on the market. It also feels quite chunky too. 10.39 x 7.44 x 0.52 inches (264 x 189 x 13.3mm) to be exact, and while it feels solid to hold, the build quality could have been a lot better. Engadget make the point that the IdeaPad K1 has some similarities in this department as the Toshiba Thrive.

When it comes to performance and software, the IdeaPad K1 has some good things and some bad things going for it. The software is said to be easy to manage and operate and although Lenovo have not made too many tweaks and additions to the Android OS, it is easy to customize these yourself if you want to. On the down side, performance does seem to linger behind. There is noticeable lag when switching from landscape to portrait and vice versa, plus the device did struggle at times when in general use which some other tablets do without a second thought. Responsiveness and un-appealing battery life also hinder what could have been a great all-round tablet to use.

In Engadget’s round-up they say that you probably could get something a litter better, faster and thinner if certain factors mentioned here do not meet your requirements. Maybe there is hope for the Lenovo ThinkPad though?
