Toshiba has just announced a new ultrabook series, this is the Toshiba Portege Z830 series and if you check out the official press release you will see that Toshiba are marketing these models towards people who want “Supreme Portability and Enhanced Functionality at Affordable Price”.

We are told that prices will start at under $1000, however as you would expect there will be plenty of upgrade options available to you – all variants will feature 2nd generation Intel Core processors, weigh less than 2.5 pounds and are just 15.9mm thick, we are told that this makes the Z830 series 40% thinner and 20% lighter than the popular R830 series. You can see just how compact the design is below.

We do not have a full breakdown of technical specs for different price brackets, however we can confirm that that the 2nd-gen Intel Core processors will be backed up with DDR3 RAM and solid-state drive options. When we hear more regarding tech specs we will keep you posted – you may be able to gain a little more insight here. The image below appears to show 2 x USB ports on the back of the laptop (one of which appears to be USB 3.0), also there is HDMI-out, an Ethernet port and VGA-out. Other images also show a memory card slot (SD), standard headphone and microphone jacks and a built-in webcam.

In terms of features worth mentioning we were impressed by the spill-resistant LED backlit keyboard, its Hi-Speed Start technology (fast boot up) and USB Sleep & Charge technology – also the laptop’s stereo speakers should sound great thanks to Wave Audio’s enhanced audio technology.

The Toshiba Portege Z830 Ultrabook will become available in November and as previously mentioned prices should start at below $1000, we like the design, however until we hear more specifics we can’t really tell you whether the Z830 will be value for money, we will have to keep you posted.

Whenever a laptop maker comes up with a new model they always seem to pit it against the MacBook Pro. However, in the HP ProBook 5330m review it is looked more as a rival to the ThinkPad X1 and Portege R705 from Lenevo and Toshiba respectively. This does make perfect sense, as all three are aimed at the business user.

The 5330m is more like the MacBook Air in some cases, as it has a 13.3-inch display and has been made from metal. However, the $799 starting price means that the laptop will be lacking in some key areas. The design has left a lot to be desired, so we do not believe that Apple have to worry about that side of things.

Engadget has said that the HP ProBook 5330m tries too hard to be something that it is not; although it could have got away with that a few years ago with its dated design and the weight of the device might put some off, as it weighed more than the X1, but not by much.

Looking at the battery performance the ProBook 5330m performs worse than the X1, Samsung Series 9, MacBook Air, ASUS U36Jc, Dell Vostro V13 and finally the R705. Having said all that, we do seem to forget the price of HP’s latest laptop, as the starting price is $500 cheaper than the ThinkPad X1. Choosing which laptop from the three listed above will come down to just one thing – money. Check out our Thinkpad X1 review.

Would you pay $500 more to get the ThinkPad X1 instead of the HP ProBook 5330m?

The Toshiba Portege R705 is a laptop exclusive to Best Buy, and there are a few things that help to make it an attractive sell. The first is its magnesium alloy palmrest and the second is its price – just $800 for a more than capable and powerful device.

Joanna Stern from Engadget thought that the Toshiba Portege R705 deserved a closer look so thought that she would offer her own review to see what the laptop has to offer. The first thing that needs a mention is the fact that it is half the price of most other Porteges.

The R705 packs a punch for its price with its 2.26GHz Intel Core i3-350M, 4GB of RAM and 500GB hard drive. The laptop has far more positives than negatives, the only issue seems to be with how hot the device runs – I am used to that, as I am the owner of a MacBook Air.

If you plan to celebrate the 25th year that Toshiba has been in the laptop business, then the R705 is the perfect way to do so. As we mentioned above, Best Buy is offering the Toshiba Portege R705 for just $799.99
