This is thanks to a new piece of text-to-speech software, and the voice that is played back sounded almost like he did a few years back.

The company who developed the software is CereProc and is based in Edinburgh, Scotland. They were able to match Ebert’s voice thanks to his DVD commentaries on “Citizen Kane” and “Casablanca.” He can be thankful that he had a lot of martial for the company to work with.

Roger has been in broadcasting for many years, so there was a huge catalog of material for them to use. The technology used has been used for years, and is able to turn typed text in to actual speech. However, this is the first time that the software has been used to replace someone’s voice to how it once sounded.
