Lately we have started seeing smartphones and tablets emerge on the market with 1.2-1.5GHz dual-core processors, however now Texas Instruments has given us a taste of what’s in store for us in the future by announcing a new dual-core chip.

This chip is called the Texas Instruments OMAP4470, it boasts 2 x 1.8GHz cores, it features an advanced graphics architecture and increased memory bandwidth, this will give compliant devices support for QXGA resolutions (2048×1536), faster web browsing performance and support for up to three HD screens. As you would expect the platform also allows for much better graphics functionality when compared to current solutions.

Texas Instruments see this processor as a great solution for smartphones, tablets and ultrathin laptops, also in terms of software it is suitable for Android and Linux, even “the next major version of Microsoft Windows” will benefit from its enhanced capabilities, we guess that they are talking about Windows 8!

TI’S vice president, Remi El-Ouazzane, also stated that the OMAP4470 delivers all of this whilst boasting a power-efficient architecture which is unmatched, this is great news for battery life, however we have to wait to see its real-world performance before making our judgement.

You can find out fully detailed information regarding the OMAP4470 by reading the press release over at BGR, TI say that devices utilizing this processor will hit the market in the first half of 2012, we hope to see devices at CES 2012!

Some of you may not have ever heard of the nHD Pico, which is probably why the developers of it at Texas Instruments were seen in Barcelona at the ongoing MWC. They were showing off their tiniest, thinnest optical engine so far once again.

The nHD Pico is a chip so tiny that you could fit it inside almost anything from tablets, phones as small projectors. It runs on a Pico DPP2601/2607 ASIC processor which is low powered and comprises of a greater than 1,000:1 contrast ratio, a 640×360 resolution and a true RGB LED wide color gamut.

Engadget report that Texas Instruments were modeling the nHD Pico using their newest launched device the Acer C20, with representatives onsite saying the chipset was included in other manufacturers plans also. This device can be seen over at Engadget.

The chip was also shown off in a Pico projector, a tiny hand-held device powered through USB, requiring no battery. However Engadget say that representatives were reluctant to say who would be prepared to brand and ship their version of this cute little device.

In other related news, TI has also announced their improved Digital Signal Processor DSP, at the MWC. The C66x DSP is said to surpass performance of others in the industry with its 1.5GHz speed. TI say their C66x DSP is a ‘major breakthrough’ and is just a sample of what they intend to deliver to customers over the next year and a half.

What do you think of the tiny nHD Pico? Does it represent the future of image projection?

If you thought that today’s smartphones and tablets were fast, think again, Texas Instruments have recently revealed a press release showing of a new chip they call the OMAP4440 processor.

The OMAP4440 chip will apparently feature 2 x ARM Cortex A9 processors with core speeds of up to 1.5GHz, apparently this will be enough power to deliver 1080p stereoscopic 3D and will greatly out perform the yet-to-be-released OMAP4430 processor.

Apparently the OMAP4440 will give you 1.25x better graphics performance than the OMAP4430, other comparisons between the two processors show that the new chip will cut webpage load times by 30% and deliver twice the 1080p video playback performance.

It is thought that OMAP4430-based devices will begin arriving in the first half of 2011, due to the fact that the OMAP4440 is an extremely similar processor it will allow manufacturers to easily give their devices a performance upgrade.

If you check out Engadget’s recent article you can read Texas Instrument’s full press release, here you can see fully detailed information regarding the OMAP4440, as for when we will start seeing devices featuring this impressive chip, nothing is confirmed, however we can safely say that they won’t arrive until at least Q3 2011.

Below we have embedded an image showing the chip block diagram, click on it if you would like to see a full-size version.

In desktop computers and laptops Intel are arguably the leaders in the processor market, however it now looks as if they are looking to shake up the mobile device market.

This is pretty evident in their recent acquisitions of Infineon Technology’s wireless division and security software giant McAfee, also they have apparently played a big part in the development of Nokia’s MeeGo operating system.

Many suspect that Intel will soon be taking on mobile chip manufacturers such as ARM, Qualcomm and Texas Instruments in the smartphone processor market, however previously Intel have struggled to develop low power consumption processors.

Recently Intel has been working on Atom chips for netbooks and tablets, therefore they have probably a better idea as to how to get great performance from a more economical chip.

In recent years the smartphone market has grown rapidly, therefore it is no surprise to see Intel looking into this avenue of business, however will it be too little too late for them?

As I always say the more competition in a particular market always results in end users getting a better overall product, therefore I am looking forward to Intel attempting to outdo other mobile chip manufacturers.

Do you think Intel can take on the likes of ARM, Qualcomm and Texas Instruments in the smartphone market?
