Now that we’ve entered a new month we thought it would make an interesting article to look at famous October birthdays in technology. One of the most famous tech people born in the month of October is Bill Gates, with a birthday of October 28, 1955. There is not a lot we need to explain about this billionaire other than use the words Windows and Microsoft, which was started in 1976.

Some other famous birthdays in October for tech related people include John Warnock (October 6 in 1940), the computer scientist well known for being a co-founder of Adobe Systems Inc with Charles Geschke. October 14, 1857 is the birthday of Elwood Haynes, an auto pioneer who built one of the earliest American autos and two days later on October 16, although in 1979 is the birthday of Matt Nagle who is the first person to use “brain-computer interface to control movement”.

There are also lots of patents for this month, which mark the birth of some inventions that changed our lives forever. These include Electric photography; also know as photocopying and xerography, which was patented on October 6, 1941 by Chester Carlson. October 10, 1911 is when Henry Ford received a patent for “automobile transmission mechanism”, and we know how this turned out.

Other notable patent birthdays include one for “multi-control for electric trains”, which was granted to Frank Sprague on October 16, 1900. And Nintendo fans will be happy that Nintendo of America registered on October 27, 1992 for the configuration of their famous hand-held gaming device.

What famous tech people do you know that were born in October? And do you know any inventions that were discovered in the same month?

I have been to hospital many times, but only needed to have an X-Ray a couple of times, but that is a different story at the dentist, I have had numerous X-Rays there. However, at no point have I looked at these machines and thought that they were 115 years old – well the invention anyway.

The X-Ray or X-radiation, which is its technical term was invented back in 1895 by Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen. The German scientist stumbled across the idea while running experiments with Vacuum tubes. It was then that he took an X-ray of his wife’s hand and started to show it about, the response from both the public and the scientific world was immense.

He had to give this new form of radiation a name, so settled with ‘X’, the reason behind this was because he had no name for it, as it was unknown. There were many objections over this name, but it stuck – cannot imagine it being called anything else.

There are so many misconceptions of the X-Ray, which NASA aims to explain in more detail. Do you think that this technology is one of the most important discoveries? I am sure that you have some amazing X-Ray related stories to tell us, just keep them clean.

Most Sci-Fi fans know just what a Tricorder is, although it has always been a fictional gadget in the Star Trek universe – TV series created by Gene Roddenberry – that was dreamed up many years ago.

One of the first attempts to create such a device in the real world was back in 1996, and was by Vital Technologies Corporation. You can see a photo in this article on stim.com; it was called “Star-Trek Tricorder Mark 1”. The device apparently included a “Two-Mode Weather Station” and “Electromagnetic Field (EMF) Meter”. We’re not sure how real the scientific instrument was, but the company went out of business after selling 10,000 units.

If you’re wondering why gadgets could use the Tricorder name, this article on Wikipedia states that there was a clause in Gene Roddenberry’s contract, which meant real tech could be created in the Tricorder name.

The Tricorder is more reality in 2010 that any year before, which is thanks to a gadget created by Purdue researchers. According to CNET, the researchers say this device can “detect trace elements” on an objects surface and “determine the chemical composition”. You can read how the device works in this article on CNET.

Two Indianapolis start-ups have been created to commercialize the gadget. It’s not like the Star Trek Tricorder yet, but it’s certainly a step in the right direction. Do you think we will ever see a working REAL Star Trek Tricorder?

You may remember Bloom Box’s energy server from back in February, which saw the fuel cell “In-a-Box”, hit the headlines. Back then we saw a video with their CEO KR Sridhar, and 60 minutes explained the new technology to the world.

Since then more companies have signed up to the revolutionary fuel cell technology, and last weekend 60 minutes decided to take another look at Bloom Energy. The latest video can be seen on CBS News here.

Many startups in Silicon Valley are trying to achieve inexpensive and clean energy with no emissions, and the Bloom Box could one day be a power plant in a box, which is stored at your home and wireless.

Bloom Energy hopes to revolutionize how you get power to your home, just like cell phones replaced landlines, and laptops are replacing desktops.

Now that California has large corporations testing the Bloom Box, they are generating power on the spot, which means no need to be connected to the electric grid. Not only is this clean, but it’s apparently saving money too.

You can see the official site at bloomenergy.com. Let us know what you think of Bloom Energy. Would you want one in your home?

Do you remember that Invisibility Silk Cloak that we all see Harry Potter use? Well it seems that scientists have managed to create one, which they have covered in gold. The new technology will not work as easily as the one used in Harry Potter.

However, scientists based in Boston believe that they will be able to use the technology on much smaller wavelengths, which is what will make the cloak invisible. If they can pull it off, then we could see a range of uses for this – such as defense and biomedicine.

The reason why silk was used is because it can interface closely with our body. The technique used to do this was by taking a piece of silkworm silk and then covering it with 10,000 gold resonators, so when it is bombarded by terahertz waves, it passes directly though it.

There are certainly a number of uses for this new technology, but we are certain that the U.S. Defense Agency will want to use it, as it could be ideal for combat. Could we actually have a truly stealth fighter plane that will not only be invisible to the radar but also to the human eye as well? For more details visit Sify News.
