We told you earlier that Amazon had seen profits slump as the retailer invests heavily in its upcoming Android tablet. But the company may see more competition in the budget sector, as the Impression Android tablet will come in cheaper than the Kindle Fire.

The US based tablet PC maker Leader International Inc, already has the Impression 10 that was released earlier this year. According to Tablets Planet the 9.7-inch device is available for around $350, and the company has come back with an even cheaper offering. This time it will offer a new 7-inch model that will retail for the incredible $179 price bracket.

For your money you will get a device that has an 800 x 480 resistive touchscreen, which will also be running the Android 2.2 Froyo operating system. With this type of screen it will need users to use a stylus or a finger nail over your finger tip.

Other features of the device include an accelerometer G- sensor, 4GB of onboard storage, 512MB of RAM, Wi-Fi, 0.3 megapixel camera, and a microSD slot allows for memory expansion up to 16GB. The tablet PC also comes with 1 USB port, 1 mini-USB 2.0 port, and a 3.5mm headphone socket. Battery life from the 3.7V Lithium polymer unit is claimed to be six hours.

The new Impression tablet PC is set to be available from retailers next month, and should provide consumers a nice alternative to more expensive devices. What do you make of the new Impression 7 tablet PC?

The tablet PC market is growing at a fast rate with new devices coming out all the time. Since Apple first released the iPad manufacturers have decided to bring out their own models. Samsung first brought out the original Galaxy Tab last year but have now released their latest offering. Now today we have news of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and first impressions of the device.

Preorders for the device went live yesterday in the US, and some actually managed to pick one up if they went to Best Buy in Union Square New York. Joe Wilcox of betanews managed to get hold of one and has reviewed the new tablet PC.

Straight out of the box the new Galaxy Tab failed to impress, with the dimensions found to be too long and narrow. The Samsung has a more rectangular shape compared to the iPad 2, and it felt top heavy even when held in both hands. This may not be a problem to some users as it is just a personal issue.

Setup was pretty straight forward, and you are asked to connect to a Wi-Fi network and to input date and time. If you already have a Google account set up is even simpler to do and syncs to all your data stored with the account.

The 10.1 screen was found to be bright and responsive, and using the interface the resolution was pleasing to the eye. Using the Honeycomb OS was found to be intuitive and gave a very good first impression. The device was found to be fast especially app installation, and unlike iOS the Android apps scaled really well.

The browser was found to be extremely fast and responsive, and has real tab browsing like on a PC. Users can use Chrome sync which imports bookmarks in a very short space of time. Samsung have been making a lot of noise about the device having Flash, but the Galaxy Tab doesn’t come with it already installed. You have to go to the Android Market to download and to install.

When trying to watch video content Hulu was a no go as there isn’t an app for Android. When trying another site Syfy, a Flash video could be watched but only in a small window, unlike a full screen with a PC browser. The review was only a first impressions take on the device, but are you considering buying a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1?

The iPad has been the number one selling tablet device for almost a year now, but it seems that things are all set to change. Since Apple’s tablet was released last April it has been the only major device of its kind on the market, but the likes of Motorola, RIM and others are about to get in on the party.

AppleInsider reports that <s>iPad sales</s> iPad’s marketshare fell by 95 percent in the last quarter, which means that they now only have a 77% share of the market. The biggest competitor that Apple has is Google – this is just like a mirror image of the smartphone market. Apple needs the iPad 2 to have a huge impact, as they need to get that market share back once again.

Personally I do not think that Apple will ever have the overall tablet marketshare again, as there is and will be far too much competition now. The first tablet to start eating into this was the Samsung Galaxy Tab, and the next looks set to be the Motorola Xoom and possibly the BlackBerry PlayBook from RIM.

To give you an idea of how much the new 2011 iPad needs to make an impact, we have found a few interesting figures from Computer World. Tablets that run on Google Android have increased by 2,000 percent, with its global market now reaching 22 percent in the fourth quarter.

There are a huge number of tablets that are all set to take the fight to Apple and its iPad, but which of those will you be buying? To give you more of an idea here are some of the top tablets from CES 2011.

Since Apple first brought us the iPad last year the market for tablets is starting to really take off. Many different companies are trying to get in on the action by bringing out their own tablet PCs. With various notebooks and laptops available as well, is the life of the desktop PC almost at an end?

An article over at Engadget is reporting on some statistics released by Canalys, these are accompanied by a pretty controversial statement. They are basically saying that devices such as the iPad and the Galaxy tab are PCs, and with this in mind they say ‘We are encouraging vendors to plan for the future and not to remain stuck in the past.’

The figures released show that Apple without the iPad doesn’t even break into the top five of global PC manufacturers. In 2009 the company only had a 3.8 percent share of the market, but with the iPad has seen that grow to 10.8. Tablets which are now coming to the market this year are indeed as powerful as many desktops, so the statement from Canalys may not be so wide off the mark after all.

For those of you who are thinking of purchasing a new tablet or notebook, eHow has written an article weighing up the pros and cons for each device. Would you prefer a tablet over a notebook? And how do you think Tablet sales will compare with PC sales in 2011? Use the link to read the full statement from Canalys.

The once dead in the water Tablet PC market is now booming and we have seen a few devices now that have been pretty innovative. The ones that are doing well at the moment are of course the iPad which is the market leader by a long way and then the Samsung Galaxy Tab which is doing better than first expected.

Now we are seeing more different types of device including dual touch screen machine like Taiji Electronics latest creation. The currently unnamed device was last talked about half way through November along with its big brother the Taiji T10A at the Elexcon conference.

The specs of the Taiji T10A are as follows, it runs on Windows 7, has a front facing camera, VX700 graphics, a VIA C7-M 1.2GHz processor and boasts a 10.1” touch screen. Sounds pretty good. Its little brother we don’t have too many details of other than it has a dual touch screen in a shell style with both screens being 8” each. You can read a bit more about these devices over at slashgear.com where Chris Davies has written his article by clicking here.

We haven’t heard when these two devices will be released as yet but be sure we will let you know ASAP. What do you think of these two? Could they make an impact in a market that is becoming crowded? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

We have done a comparison before between the Nook Color and the Amazon Kindle, where we were asking you, which is the better device? We also brought you our thoughts on how the Nook Color could possibly become a game changer. Well perhaps now it could be!

Nachiket Mhatre over at techtree.com has reported that the $250 device has been hacked and has been spotted running the Android 2.2.1 OS. This is brilliant as the so called e-reader is more than up to the task of being a decent little Tablet PC, it has an 800MHz processor, a capacitive touch screen display with 1024 x 600 pixel display as well as 512MB of RAM. You can see a video of the device running the OS at the bottom of the article.

It is great to see someone moving it away from the Barnes and Noble’s own Nook UI and actually putting the device to the test. It also makes for a great cost saving, especially when you think of the price of the current Android tablets out there. Nice work!

What do you think of the Nook Color being hacked and running the Android 2.2.1 OS? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Speculation about the next generation of iPad is growing, and many people are looking for several improvements on the hardware when the device eventually becomes available next year. A front facing camera is amongst some of the rumored new features, but one new upgrade that could be difficult to have is a Retina display.

Fred Straker of The iPad Guide is reporting that according to calculations by Ryan Block, a 9.7 inch iPad screen would exceed the capabilities of current mobile device technology. With the iPhone 4 having a smaller screen, the 330 pixels per inch works well with it. The Retina display has 614,000 pixels at 960 x 640, and each pixel has to be rendered.

Processors to power the display graphics are the same in the iPhone 4 and the current iPad, and the iPad display has 786,432 pixels at 1024 x 768. To have a Retina display on the iPad would mean a massive number of pixels, which would mean the processing hardware would be overwhelmed. To achieve a Retina screen on the iPad it would need 2560 x 1920 = 4,915,200 pixels.

Compare that to the Apple 27-inch Cinema Display which has 2560 x 1440 = 3,686,400 pixels. Current technology just won’t be able to achieve that amount of pixels on a mobile device, but Apple have surprised us before and may have some super low power graphics processor up its sleeve.

AS we see more companies bringing out new tablet PC’s, the battle to be top dog in the tablet market is really warming up as they try and take on the Apple iPad. The CEO of Acer Gianfranco Lanci is certainly in a confident mood about his company’s chances of overtaking Apple with sales of tablets.

Joe Minihane of T3 is reporting that according to Lanci the offerings from Acer will overtake Apple to claim top spot within two or three years. Speaking to Digitimes he said that “Sales of iPad pushed forward very fast initially, but have slowed down in the past few weeks”.

He didn’t offer any proof of this though, and the iPad has sold a remarkable 7.5 million units since it was first launched earlier this year. He added “We hope our tablet PCs can reach a global market share of 10-20% initially, and become the market leader in two to three years.” Considering that Acer tablets are not due to hit the market until April 2011, his claims are quite ambitious, and the new iPad should also be available by then.

Currently Apple are enjoying a massive 95.5% of the tablet market, but others including Samsung with the Galaxy Tab are hoping to chip away at that figure. The coming months are set to be good for consumers who are in the market for a tablet PC; with more choice we should see competition in prices.

Do you think Acer have a chance of outselling Apple?

The waiting is over after Samsung have finally made public more information and specs on the Galaxy Tab. The seven inch Android tablet could be some serious competition for Apple’s iPad.

Paul Miller of Engadget has news of Samsung’s official press release and first video ad for the new device. Running Android 2.2 and weighing only 380g the Galaxy Tab certainly looks the part, especially the smart TFT-LCD display. The device is powered by a Cortex A8 1.0GHz processor so offers high performance.

HD video is supported in a wide range of formats, H.263, H.264, DivX, XviD, MPEG4, and more. Two camera’s are included with the front one allowing face to face video calls via 3G, and the rear facing one is 3 MP with LED flash and autofocus.

Bluetooth 3.0, 3G HSUPA and 802.11n Wi-Fi gives users mobile communication on a new level. Internal storage comes in 16GB or 32GB, and can be increased by up to 32GB via a micro SD card. Catch the Samsung ad video below.

Apple has had the tablet market all to itself this year with the iPad, which is a bit of a shock as the media hyped that 2010 was going to be the year of the tablet PC and not the netbook. We do not want to dwell on the past, let us look to the rest of the year and see what iPad alternatives we can expect for not only 2010 but 2011 as well?

The first device that springs to be mind is the Samsung Galaxy Tab, as we recently learned that they had released a teaser video. This could be the first iPad rival, but does it have what it takes? The simple answer is yes, as it has more than capable hardware and the Android 2.2 OS– but is that really enough? The tab has a 7-inch display, which seems funny, as there have been rumors that Apple could be working on an iPad of the same size.

The rest of the tablet market is a strange one, there have been a number of reviews of different tablets, but none of them will threaten the iPad any time soon. However, there are those that have the potential, but we are still in the dark as to their names, spec and release date details.

The first is the HP tablet, the latest seems to suggest that there will be two version, one running Windows 7 Enterprise and the other Palm webOS, which many believe will be a better system. Sticking with Windows 7, Microsoft is said to still be working on the Slate – although this project has been off and all since CES 2010.

Motorola and Verizon has announced that they too are working on a tablet device, and looking at their track record we could be looking at a Droid tablet and could possibly run on Android 3.0 Gingerbread.

Sticking with Android, they seem to be the ones that will offer the biggest threat to Apple, just as they do in the cell phone market. Many companies have announced that they will be backing Android in the tablet market; with some scheduled for release later this year, but most coming from the start of 2011.

RIM does not want to be left out of the party either, and rumors of a BlackBerry BlackPad show that. So we know that there are a number of Apple iPad alternatives coming, the question is – do they offer any threat?
