Lately we have seen Android 2.3 Gingerbread leak for the HTC Desire and the T-Mobile G2X, now we can confirm that the Android 2.3 Gingerbread ROM is available to download for the T-Mobile G2.

It is thought that the update will be rolled out by T-Mobile pretty soon, however if you cannot wait you can grab the ROM for yourself here. As with any leaked ROM we cannot say if it is official, therefore it is up to you whether you trust the uploader. We recommend being patient and waiting for the official rollout.

According to IntoMobile the update procedure is pretty simple, however if you have a rooted device going back to stock software is not as simple. We would strongly recommend backing up all personal data beforehand just in case.

Each Gingerbread ROM differs depending on the device you are running, the official Gingerbread notes suggest that it should bring an improved UI, an easier to use keyboard and better copy and paste functionality. In the background there are probably lots of bug fixes and security improvements.

If you were brave enough to update your T-Mobile G2 with this ROM we would love to get some feedback from you, therefore feel free to answer any of the following questions: Did the update process go smoothly for you? Were there lots of noticeable changes and improvements upon installation? Would you recommend this particular update to others? Let us know in the comments section below.

We have some good news for those of you who have just purchased a MyTouch 4G handset on T-Mobile, as we can confirm that the handset has just been successfully rooted, with a little help from it’s neighbour, the G2.

As reported from Engadget, you won’t be surprised to hear that the root has been achieved once again courtesy of the guys over at the XDA Developers Forums.

User Grankin01 has written up a lengthy list of instructions as well as the download links needed to perform the root. As you can see from the list of steps, the process doesn’t exactly look ‘easy’, so it may be best to avoid this if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Also, now that the handset has been rooted, users shouldn’t have too long to wait until a custom version of Froyo is released, but you’d have to root your handset anyway if you wanted to install it.

If you think you’re brave enough, check out the steps over at XDA here. As always, let us know how you get on and if the process worked for you or not.

It seems as though the problems continue for the successor to the first Android handset, as the HTC made phone is struggling with previewing and downloading Gmail attachments.

The T-Mobile G2 was only on sale for a few hours before we heard numerous reports of problems, mostly pointing towards loose hinges that made the screen hang slightly when held upside down.

Now a new issue has come to light, and although not affecting all users, some of you are experiencing an issue that when sent a JPG image, you only see a “fetching attachment” pop-up which just hangs.

It is thought that the issue has been around for some time, as it was first discovered around the end of September, so this cancels out the recent T-Mobile OTA update that enabled tethering and WiFi calling as a culprit.

Google are apparently well aware of the issue, but with the bug seemingly being around for over a month, it’s a wonder what they are doing to fix it.

Are you suffering from the Gmail attachment issue?

As reported from Phandroid, a leaked T-Mobile document has been obtained by the guys over at TMoNews, and it reveals that the OTA update is due to start rolling out today, November 3rd.

You may not get it straight away though, as the document also states that the rollout process will continue gradually up until Monday 8th November. Aside from being able to make free calls over WiFi, the OTA update will also allow you to enjoy free tethering over a WiFi hotspot, although this feature may not stay ‘free’ forever.

We have some good news for the Android community now, as HTC has just released the official source codes for the HTC Droid Incredible (new version), HTC Desire Z and the recently released T-Mobile G2.

As reported from Phandroid, you’ll find the download links for each handset over on the official HTC website here, there are also a full list of other handsets which HTC has provided some developer goodies for.

What does this mean for the average G2, Incredible or Desire Z owner though? Well basically, the release of the source code allows developers to work on some cool applications and Android OS tweaks specific for that device, while the naughty developers will get straight to work on some custom Android 2.2 Froyo ROMs.

If obtaining the source code interests you, head to HTC’s site above to download.

For those of you who own a T-mobile G2 (HTC Vision), then you would have been happy with an OTA of Android 2.2 Froyo. However, with the extra bump in software performance it was time for a hardware bump. It seems that it is possible for the processor to go from 800MHz to 1.42GHz.

We would never recommend overclocking your cell phone, but this is a huge increase of just over 80 percent. However, I am not certain how long I would want to run my smartphone at that speed? Do not expect to get the best out of the battery though, that would drain faster than a Bugatti Veyron goes through its gasoline while doing over 250mph.

While watching the video below you will see how the mod begins by increasing the CPU to 1GHz. Things seemed to go smoothly, so it was a continuous push until the magic 1.42GHz was reached. I wonder if the G2 will run as hot as an old Xbox 360?

For those who thought that an 80% speed increase was good, then you will be shocked to know that there is room for even more speed – just do not try it on your phone.

Would you ever try to overclock your cell phone?

You may recall one of our previous articles which showed you how to root the newly released T-Mobile G2 smartphone, but now we have an even better method for you to try out.

As reported from Phandroid, the new root method comes to you courtesy of VISIONary, and will allow you to root your G2 handset with a single click!

Furthermore, this version will offer a feature which automatically roots your device after rebooting, since the previous method lost it’s root ability whenever a user reboots his or her device. This new app by VISIONary will definitely save a lot of frustration for users.

If you’re interested in trying this out, you can follow the steps over at MoDaCo forums thanks to VISIONary creator, Paul O’Brien. If you are going to attempt this new root method, let us know how you get on afterwards.

We have some disappointing news for consumers on T-Mobile now, as the carrier has announced that they will be introducing data caps for users who continue to use excessive amounts of data on their smartphones.

As reported from BGR, the data cap will commence this Saturday, October 16 and customers will suffer from an automatic drop in data speeds if they go over the usage limit of 5GB.

T-Mobile has said that they are enforcing this rule to make the browsing experience fair for everyone, by limiting those considered to be ‘extreme’ users. The carrier has issued a lengthy statement, advising customers how the new data caps will work. Below is the important part that you need to read:

”If a customer happens to reach the 5GB limit, they will receive a free text message informing them their data speed will be reduced. Customers will continue to have Web browsing capabilities but at slower speeds, which will be determined by their device type. Once their new billing cycle begins, data speeds will no longer be restricted.”

It sounds pretty fair to us. Even if you do go over the 5GB a month, you’ll go back to normal speeds on the next billing cycle. It will be interesting to see if any of you actually come close to churning out 5GB of usage.

For those of you on T-Mobile, does the new rules apply to you?

As reported from BGR, the Froyo equipped handset has only been available for a couple of weeks, but we’re glad to report that T-Mobile are already hard at work to make sure Froyo on the G2 is the best experience possible.

The OTA update is apparently available now for some users, while it is currently rolling out to everyone else. A few of the main features in the update include WiFi calling and Mobile Hotspot creation, i.e – tethering support.

The question is though, have you received the update notification already? If so, let us know thoughts on the handset after installing.

We have an interesting article for those of you who are planning to pick up a T-Mobile G2, but cannot decide, as we have some useful camera comparison photos with the iPhone 4 for you to check out.

The photos come to us courtesy of Engadget, who included the photos in their detailed G2 review. Just so you know, both the T-Mobile G2 and iPhone 4 come equipped with 5 megapixel cameras, so which one performs best?

While Engadget say that the G2 camera is better than the Nexus One, it suffers from a lack of clarity and color depth as you can see in some of the pictures below. They add that the camera is ‘acceptable’, but nothing mind-blowing as the iPhone 4 comfortably outperforms the G2 in still shots as well as video recording.

Take a look at some sample images below, then read Engadget’s full lowdown on the G2 camera here. Let us know if any of you disagree on any of the points mentioned above.
