A solstice, for those of you that don’t know, is the astronomical event that takes place twice a year. Once on the day where the sun is at its highest position of the year and once when it is at its lowest position, hence longest and shortest days of the year.

In some cultures when the event takes place it marks the start of a new season, which explains why Google are using Takashi Murakami’s The First Day of Summer drawing as today’s Google Doodle. For other cultures the event takes place mid-season marking the halfway point of the annual cycle. The news we have today is that Maplin, the UK’s best and biggest retailer of consumer electronics, has launched their summer and solar essential range to mark the Summer Solstice 2011. The retailers say ‘saving money it our motto this year’ and have provided customers with the latest gizmos and gadgets that you would need for the summer season with their more affordable than ever solar range.

The solar range includes small easy-to-use solar devices that can be used wherever you are such as on the go products and gardening products as well as regular household alternatives. Some of the products included are the Solar Powered Mobile Phone Charger, which is capable of charging your MP3, Digital Camera and more also.

Also the Solar-Powered Shepherd Lantern, a stylish lamp ideal for gardens, driveways and patios, plus several more solar powered outdoor lights. There are also a variety of general outdoor use summer products such as the Telescopic Water Fed Brush used for cleaning windows and cars and also the Self Heating Electric Waistcoat.

Marketing Director at Maplin, David O’Reilly say more customers are beginning to realize they can play a role in reducing their carbon footprint and do their bit for the environment simply by using alternative sources of power such as solar power for their appliances and gadgets. We would never associate today as a big sale event like we do with other times of the year, such as Easter, Christmas and Black Friday. The latter has to be the most famous when it comes to in-store sales, with Cyber Monday coming a close second, although it has started to gain ground.

The first to get in on the Summer Solstice action is Google, which you will know if you visit their homepage, as they have a Doodle. However, some stores have used this opportunity to launch a 24-hour sale. Having said that, one has to wonder if these sales have been going for sometime, but the stores has used today to highlight them?

We could have gone down the same route as some other websites and talk about the big stores offering deals, but why when everyone else is reporting the same thing?

One such store is Old Navy, and they are offering 24 percent off your online order. This will not happen automatically, so you will need to enter code SOLSTICE24 once you are at the checkout. Another deal is free shipping on each order over $50.

Another Summer Solstice sale is from Pipistrelle who is giving customers 30 percent off at the checkout. Again you will need to add a code; this time you need to enter SOLSTICE30 to receive your discount. These deals can be found on the Etsy website.

If you are in the market for vintage goods, then you will need to check out the Clever Nettle website. We love how they are honest when they say that the sale is on to get rid of old stock ready for few products to come in. We have seen a pattern with these deals that we have looked at, as they are getting lower. This one only gives you 20 percent off, but it’s better than a kick in the teeth.

In a way to say sorry for these deals getting lower we have dug around and found someone officering 50 percent off – it’s like a mini Black Friday. The website in question is Renderosity, and you had better act fast, as the sale ends today. However, there are other hot savings to be made for the next two weeks.
