The two biggest players in the smartphone market are the iPhone and Android devices, but these two could face increasing competition from Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system. The latest version of the software is gaining widespread acclaim as it begins to become more available. Microsoft’s chief executive, Steve Ballmer, has recently had a pop at Android handsets and their so called complexity.

He is not known for pulling his punches, and when he was speaking ahead of Microsoft’s results he said consumers had to be “computer scientists” to work out how to use an Android handset. The Telegraph is reporting Ballmer was asked what the appeal of a Windows phone compared to that of the Android platform.

He replied you don’t have to be “computer scientist to use a Windows phone and you do to use an Android phone”. He added he found it hard to be “excited about the Android phones”. Ballmer had nicer words to say about Apple though saying they were a good rival, “but a different one”. He had kind words to say about the new Siri feature that was launched with the iPhone 4S.

But that didn’t stop him to claim that handsets running the Windows Phone software were better than the iPhone for putting the user’s needs first. He said that devices on both platforms looked good and felt nice to hold, but when you start using a Windows device the information “is front and centre”.

He does feel though those devices on the Windows Phone platform have to better compete price wise with Android handsets, and also denied the company would release its own smartphone to take on the Apple iPhone.

Do you agree with Ballmer’s comments?

The Microsoft Kinect has proved to be a major success since it was first released, and the potential for the device as more games and applications become available is huge....

The Microsoft Kinect has proved to be a major success since it was first released, and the potential for the device as more games and applications become available is huge. Now owners of PC’s running Windows could use the device sometime in the future.

Adam Hartley of TechRadar is reporting that Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer was talking to the presenter of the BBC’s Click program earlier in the week and hinted at PC support in the future. When asked about the possibility of Kinect coming to PC he said “Will support that in a formal way in the right time… and when we have an announcement to make then we’ll make it.”

For now the company was concentrating on socialization using Xbox and Kinect, and wanted to bring the experience to non-gamers with music, movies and more. When Ballmer was asked about Apple he just said “Apple’s business is Apple’s business”.

He added that the biggest app system in the world is the PC, then the web. He went on to say “In particular, as the web moves to HTML 5, which we are doing, I think, beautifully in our Internet Explorer 9”.

Would you like to see the Kinect get support for PC’s? And what uses do you think it will have besides gaming?
