You may wonder why we would be talking about the new Star Trek movie; well it seems as though Audi has done yet another fantastic tie-in, and this time with Star Trek Into Darkness.

Audi’s new Star Trek Into Darkness commercial is a very funny tie-in featuring the two Spocks, Leonard Nimoy and Zachary Quinto. In the video the old and new just wants to outdo each other all the time, and after being beaten by their latest competition, Quinto suggests a race to the golf course.

Nimoy is driving a Mercedes, while Quinto is behind the wheel of the Audi. It’s clear from the start that the Audi has the edge, although this was obvious considering it’s their commercial.

The new Spock wins the contest, but there was a funny moment towards the end, when Nimoy puts his arm around Quinto and performs the Vulcan neck pinch, which sees him fall to the ground.

The final scene is the pivotal part of the commercial, as it shows an Audi driving itself away, showing that the Audi is better than the both of them. This new Star Trek Into Darkness and Audi tie-in is nothing new, as the German car manufacturer already has a huge presence in the Iron Man movies, and more so in the latest one, Iron Man 3.

What’s the best part of this new commercial?

Over at Yahoo! Movies you can find out what the stars of the original TV show are doing now and some of their successes since the show. Leonard Nimoy who is now 79 has now retired from acting and was famous for playing Spock in the show. He appeared in the last big movie of Star Trek and used it to bow out at the top.

Many people have commented on the game by saying that it looks remarkably similar to Mass Effect because of the environments and the graphics, this is by no means a bad thing and if the developers mix this with a fresh story line and solid gameplay they could be on to a real winner.

Some people on VG247′s page feel that it does not feel like the old Star Trek that people loved on TV, instead as another post points out, it is based on the latest film that was released and not on the older films and TV series. Another interesting point noted on VG247 was that they clearly state that “Exclusive content destined for Sony’s console”, finally the PS3 is getting the priority treatment the over other platforms.

The game will be released for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC and should be a hit with both fans of games like Mass Effect and huge fans of Star Trek. Will it be a success though do you think? One of the first attempts to create such a device in the real world was back in 1996, and was by Vital Technologies Corporation. You can see a photo in this article on stim.com; it was called “Star-Trek Tricorder Mark 1”. The device apparently included a “Two-Mode Weather Station” and “Electromagnetic Field (EMF) Meter”. We’re not sure how real the scientific instrument was, but the company went out of business after selling 10,000 units.

If you’re wondering why gadgets could use the Tricorder name, this article on Wikipedia states that there was a clause in Gene Roddenberry’s contract, which meant real tech could be created in the Tricorder name.

The Tricorder is more reality in 2010 that any year before, which is thanks to a gadget created by Purdue researchers. According to CNET, the researchers say this device can “detect trace elements” on an objects surface and “determine the chemical composition”.
