As reported from VG247, the PC version of the game is now available to buy, with console versions expected later on this year, but developers Cryptic confirmed that the project is now pretty much over.

Executive Producer Craig Zinkievich had this to say on the news: ”As it stands right now it’s a little difficult to make that final leap on the business side of things. So, currently, just like Champions, the console version of Star Trek Online is on the back burner.”

This is pretty bad news for those of you who were really looking forward to the game. Looks like another console MMO has not managed to see the light of day on the PS3 or Xbox 360.

According to the official website the game is set for a release date of the 2nd of February 2010, the beta testing of the game is set to finish on the 26th of January.

Obviously there is an outside chance that the game will come across far too many problems in testing to stick to this early February release date, however chances are you ‘Trekkers’ will travelling Star Trek’s universe in just over 2 weeks.

If we hear of changes to the release date or anything else relevant we will keep you posted.

Star Trek Online’s Executive Producer had this to say regarding the recent announcement, “We are thrilled to give open beta access to fans as we draw nearer to the official release of Star Trek Online,” and added “We are looking forward to the launch of our first-of-a-kind MMORPG with anticipation and excitement and we expect Star Trek Online to explode onto the scene, giving fans and gamers a Star Trek experience like no other.”

Star Trek Online is an MMORPG, it is set in 2049 and allows players to explore the Star Trek universe, the game is said to be quite unique and offer extremely extraordinary adventures.
