Is your current laptop or notebook looking a little bit outdated? Do you fancy buying yourself a nice new model? If you answered both those questions with a yes, then you might be pleased to know that Sony has just announced its new VAIO E Series laptops.

As Rue Liu over at slashgear.com recently noted, the Sony VAIO E Series laptops come in three different sizes, as well as a variety of colors. For example, the 14-inch and 15.5-inch models are available in blush pink, glacier white, charcoal black and midnight blue.

Meanwhile, the larger 17.3-inch model is only available in two colors: glacier white or charcoal black. All three models are finger-print resistant and come with geometric patterns on the lid and matching palm rests and a textured, dimpled touchpad.

All three VAIO E Series laptops come with an LED-backlit LCD display and an HDMI output that enables users to connect it to their HDTV, as well as a built-in microphone and webcam – which features face-tracking technology – for video conferencing.

Processor options for the VAIO E Series include a second-generation Intel Core i3 or i5 processor with Turbo Boost Technology 2.0 and Intel Hyper-Threading. The 15.5-inch model in charcoal black also has the option of an AMD E-350 Dual-Core CPU with AMD Mobility Radeon HD6130 Graphics Vision technology.

The Sony VAIO E Series laptops will be available for pre-order online as from June 19th, and will then be available to purchase from Sony stores and other major retailers starting next month. The E Series notebooks start from around $550. Would you buy a Sony VAIO E Series laptop?

Earlier this year Apple released the 2011 MacBook Pro, this was the first product on the market to feature Thunderbolt connectivity, now we are hearing that upcoming Sony VAIO models will also get Thunderbolt, however the port looks slightly different.

We first suggested that a new VAIO series would feature Thunderbolt back in March, at the time details were scarce, however recently a photo showed up on Engadget which showed us our first glimpse of the port.

The image we have seen has been embedded below, as you can see that the arrow points to a port which we have not seen before, Engadget believe that this is Sony’s Thunderbolt port, although it does look like a USB port with a blue stripe running through the middle. This could mean a few things, maybe it is just a USB 3.0 port, maybe it is Sony’s Thunderbolt port, or maybe Sony has developed a port which allows you to use both Thunderbolt devices and USB 3.0 devices via a single port.

We are not sure what to believe, if you check out the comments section on Engadget you will see that there has been a huge response, the main argument seems to be if this is a Thunderbolt port why did Sony not use the same Mini DisplayPort as Apple, surely this is going to make finding universal products which work with both ports a pain.

Do you think the new port in the photo is Thunderbolt?

As far as laptops go, the Sony VAIOs offer a touch of style as well as catering for the different specs you’d need from a computer. Now a month after announcing their latest series, they are to make the VAIO S ultraportables available for pre-order.

Measuring in at 13.3” these laptops aren’t the biggest that money can buy but they offer the very top specs you would expect from a new line of products. The thing that makes this series so unique from the others is the new ‘slice’ battery.

When paired with this VAIO it offers an extra 9.5 hours more than the standard battery runtime. That’s 15 hours of battery life before having to recharge.

Yesterday we brought your the news of Sony‘s new iMac competitor the VAIO L Series, today we have a new notebook series to tell you about, this is the Sony VAIO C series.

It would be fair to say that the Apple iMac has paved the way for all-in-ones desktop systems, today we have details regarding Sony‘s new VAIO L Series, the models in the series feature a design and specifications which really do make this a true iMac competitor, which is great news for those of you who are not fans of Mac OS X.

According to Sony the VAIO L Series models feature a massive 24-inch LED backlit Full HD touchscreen display, also there is something called “Edge Access” which basically means the bezel around the display is touch sensitive and allows you to quickly and easily access functions without a mouse, if you touch the “VAIO” logo it opens up the media gallery, other regions of the bezel allow you to launch a virtual keyboard, adjust volume and much more.

In terms of technical specifications it will vary depending on the model you buy, all models will feature either then Intel Core i5 or i7 CPU, NVIDIA graphics, WiFi b/g/n, S-Force Front Surround 3D, USB 3.0, an integrated HD web camera, Bluetooth 3.0 and a HDMI input, the HDMI input can be used to make your VAIO a full HD monitor whether the PC is booted up or not.

At the moment pricing details are unknown, however we don’t expect it to be too cheap as options allow you to choose a Blu-ray disc drive, 8GB of RAM, 1TB of storage and a high-end Core i7 CPU, we should find out a price soon as Sony claim that the VAIO L Series family will become available at the end of March, you can find out more here.

Will you be checking out the Sony VAIO L Series when models become availabke?

Towards the end of last month we learned that Sony were to launch two new laptops, one of which was the new Sony VAIO S Series Slim. Now one would presume that this would be a rival to the MacBook Air, but you have to consider specs, which means that the MacBook Pro rumored for release in Feb 2011 would be a fairer comparison.

Most rumors suggest that the new laptop from Apple will be released in March, but some stores now have them in stock and could go on sale this Thursday. For those of you who had already made their mind up and were going to purchase one of the new slim Sony laptops in March/April, then maybe you should hold off a few days – just to see what the new MacBook Pro has to offer.

We do not know much about Apple’s refresh of the Pro, but we can tell you that it will have a form-factor similar to the Air and that it will come with a glass trackpad. However, Sony has been more wiling to share details of their new laptop – something that Apple always seems reluctant to do.

The new VAIO S Series with its 13.3-inch screen is certainly a true contender for the Pro, as it is slim and light. The case has been made from magnesium and the palmrest from aluminum, this helps give the laptop a much stronger feel while keeping weight to a minimum.

Sony has worked hard on the development of a new battery, so now you will have up to 7 hours usage – not as much as the MacBook Pro then. The worrying thing is Apple is working on increasing battery life even further. However, Sony has come up with an ingenious second battery that can be attached to the first without removing it. The design is thin and will increase the battery life to around 14 hours.

The Sony S Series laptop will use the Intel Core i7-2620M, as well as a massive 8GB DDR of RAM. There is a choice of graphics cards, either a 512MB or 1GB VRAM AMD Radeon HD 6000, which will certainly come in handy when using graphic intensive software.

We also like the addition of a 128GB SSD, which certainly helps with performance and battery life. It makes you wonder why more laptops do not come with these Solid State Drives, as price should now be much lower for this tech?

Most of the specs that we have mentioned look as though they came direct from a MacBook Pro, but Sony has a little extra to add; colors. There is to be a choice of 5 color options, black, white, silver, pink and blue.

Although Sony has been forthcoming with their new VAIO S Series Slim, the one detail that has been left out is the price. Let us hope that we will know this soon, as we will then be able to see how it truly compares to the new MacBook Pro. For more details visit Sony.

Which of the two would you rather, Sony’s effort of Apple’s?
