When Sony announced the S1 and S2 tablets we did not know much about them. We knew the basics, such as size and looks, but as for specs, price and release date forget it. However, there is now a hands-on video with the two Android tablets, and yet those specs are still elusive. Even though not much was shared at a recent event in Munich, it is clear for all to see that these devices are going to be something special.

We do know that the S1 will have a single 9.4-inch screen and the S2 will have dual 5-5 inch displays. What we can tell you is that both of these think that they are PlayStations, well sort of. German site Golem said that the smaller tablet was a little like the Nintendo DS, so no secret what market Sony are going for here then.

The larger tablet has a PS logo, so you know that Sony will go all out and market these as true gaming tablets. Maybe they feel that this is an untapped market at the moment? One thing we do know, if they do this right then they could muscle their way through the back door of the tough tablet market?

The custom UI is based on Android 3.0 Honeycomb, although Sony has gave it a bit of a tune up in order to do what they need it to do. Looking at the video we can see that the S2 has a curved design when closed but we did see a possible issue with the interface, as it seems to take a hard press of the finger for the commands to take action, but we do expect Sony to work through this issue.

As yet we do not have a release date, but we recently reported that it could be in late September. It also seems that the UK and other countries in Europe will get the devices first, and that they will be able to pre-order them the month before.

Sony is not normally this secretive about a device so close to launch, but they must have a good reason. Maybe they fear that rivals might get the jump on them if they announce spec details too soon? They might be playing a clever game, as the more we surmise about it the more media attention it gets.

We have some good news for those of you who have been keeping an eye on the elusive Sony S1 and S2 tablet devices, as we have some welcome release updates to give you. It looks like Sony’s upcoming entry into the tablet market will be first happening in Europe.

Sony’s marketing group has sent a private note via email to Engadget, informing them that a unnamed tablet device will be releasing at the end of September in the UK. Also, the device or devices will be available to pre-order starting from August, but the note didn’t highlight the names S1 and S2.

Considering that Sony went into detail on how it competes with the iPad and offers ‘unique design features’, it doesn’t take a genius to work out that they are obviously referring to their S1 and S2 tablets, both of which will be fully PlayStation certified if you remember.

Why are Sony being secretive about them though? It would make sense to us if they make this thing as public as they can as right now, as the S1 and S2 have somewhat slipped off the radar with the general public not knowing a thing or two about them. Especially if the device is available to pre-order in two months time, that doesn’t leave much time for Sony and their marketing department to get us all interested in their first tablet devices.

Aside from being a PlayStation certified device, both the S1 and S2 will be running on Android 3.0 Honeycomb and will also come with Sony Qriocity music features. No word on when it’s out in US yet, but we have a feeling both are going to be in very high demand.

Which one suits your taste best though? The S1 with it’s traditional tablet form and curved design at the back, or the totally unique S2 and it’s clamshell features? We’ll update you when we have more details for you.
