The Apple iPad continues to be the most sought after tablet PC, but other companies are bringing out alternatives for consumers. Sony has announced the S1 and S2 Honeycomb tablet PCs.

Stuart Miles from Pocket-lint is reporting that the two Android powered tablets should be available to consumers across the world during the Fall of this year. The S1 has a 9.4-inch display, and will allow owners to use it to control features on their TV. You will also be able to stream content to TVs, and music to wireless speakers via DLNA.

With the S2 you have twin 5.5-inch displays and will have the same streaming capabilities, but are designed to be more portable. Both devices will be running Android 3.0, and have Wi-Fi, WAN, Sony’s music, eBook, gaming services. There will also be PlayStation Suite and Reader Store.

The TV remote features will for the time being only work with Sony Bravia TVs, and the devices will also be 3G and 4G compatible. The two devices could give the other tablet manufactures something to think about over the coming months leading up to their release. Check out the promotional video of the new Sony tablets below.

Will you consider the Sony tablets when they become available?

Remember that Sony S1 PlayStation tablet that we told you about a few months ago? Well we have some important details for you now, as we’re hearing the device may be releasing as early as at the end of Summer 2011, if comments from Sony’s chief executive Howard Stringer are to be believed.

In a recent interview with Japanese publication Nikkei, he apparently stated that the Sony S1 will be available in the US first, with a release likely to happen in September. However, an update over at Engadget reports that the tablet will actually release at the end of the year, although this may be related to the Japanese version of the device, with the US model unaffected.

Just to refresh, the S1 is going to be a PlayStation certified device, just like the now-available Sony Xperia Play, meaning that it should be able to play PS1 games, as well as other content off the PlayStation Suite. Other specs confirmed so far include a Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor, Android 3.0 Honeycomb, a 9.4-inch display and rear and front facing cameras.

We previously asked you for your thoughts on the S1 as a gaming device, and if it was a good idea to release it or not, but now we have to say that we’re slowly warming to the idea of having a Sony branded tablet to compete alongside Apple, Motorola, Samsung, HTC and LG. Either way, we’re guessing that a full reveal is coming at E3 2011 – so hopefully we’ll have some more details to give you soon.

If you have been keeping yourself up to date with all the recent tablet reveals at MWC 2011, you were probably as surprised as we were when we heard the news that Sony may be preparing to release a ‘PlayStation’ tablet.

We want to know your thoughts on this. Do you think it’s one idea too many for Sony, or do you think a PlayStation certified tablet will go on to become a new gaming alternative alongside the Sony NGP and Nintendo 3DS?

If you missed Engadget’s report earlier this week, their sources confirmed that Sony has a 9.4inch device in the works, and that it’s currently codenamed S1 behind closed doors. It’s meant to be PS certified just like the Xperia Play and other specs include a Tegra 2 dual-core processor, front and back cameras, PS1 game support, remote play and Sony Bravia features.

We’re also hearing that this will run on Android 3.0 Honeycomb and will be released around the September period for $599. All these details so early on, it does make you wonder if they’re real or not doesnt it?

As a gamer though, would you really consider picking this up as an alternative to the Sony NGP and Nintendo 3DS? Perhaps Sony are focusing on casual gaming with the S1, and that the added PlayStation features are just a nice extra, since we all know the PSP2 (NGP) is the real meat coming this year.

Where do you stand with this S1 PlayStation tablet. Good idea for gaming in your opinion or not?
