The latest patch for the title was recently released with many owners of the PS3 hoping it would finally fix the sometimes crippling lag problem. Bethesda has now offered some advice on how to properly apply the Skyrim patch 1.4 after downloading it.

There are many owners that have found the latest Skyrim patch has finally sorted the serious lag issue on the console, but unfortunately there are still some that are still having difficulties. Now according to an article over at VG24/7 developer Bethesda has taken to the official forums offering some further advice to PS3 owners to try and fix any remaining problems.

They have said that the patch includes a number of performance improvements for the game on the PS3, but point out a few important things to be aware of. To start with owners are advised that after downloading the patch they should create a new manual save, before restarting the console and continuing to play.

The advice then goes on to state that if users notice any strange actions after applying the patch that it is only the Skyrim scripts correcting themselves, and will only be temporary. Once the correction has been completed a new save is needed ahead of a restart of the system.

Owners are then advised that if this still doesn’t help they should comment about it on the forums or other channels as Bethesda keeps an eye on these for feedback. Hopefully this will help matters as some users are getting excited about future DLC releases for the game. Recently we had some nice Skyrim DLC concept ideas for you to look at that could make the game even better. Below is a video of the patch working for one PS3 owner.

Has the latest Skyrim patch fixed all the problems for you?

Sky TV without the dish incoming http://www.product-reviews.net/2012/01/31/sky-tv-without-the-dish-incoming/ http://www.product-reviews.net/2012/01/31/sky-tv-without-the-dish-incoming/#comments Tue, 31 Jan 2012 13:12:12 +0000 Gary Johnson http://www.product-reviews.net/?p=148245 Satellite TV provider Sky have been pretty busy with regards to announcements this week, which kicked off yesterday with the announcement of the BBC iPlayer set to be available. Earlier today we told you about the incoming Sky Go application for the Android platform, and now there is news of Sky TV without the dish incoming thanks to a new internet TV service.

UK residents were recently offered the Netflix streaming service for the first time, and now Sky has announced new TV service via the internet to be launched during the first half of the year. According to a report on Electric Pig the new service will be available to anyone with a broadband connection.

The company has revealed that it will be accessed on a number of different platforms that include PCs, smartphones, Macs, connected TVs, and games consoles. This could mean that PlayStation 3 owners may get the service as owners of the Xbox 360 already has access to some Sky services.

Currently PS3 owners can rent some Sky shows via the PS Store, but is a lot less content to what Sky is talking about now. The service will exist alongside Sky Go but is different as you won’t need to subscribe to any service. Users will be able to simply rent a single movie or if they subscribe to a monthly package have unlimited access to Sky Movies.

Sky promises that streaming will be instant with an interface that will be “intuitive” to use. It will be ideal for consumers who want Sky TV but are unable to install a satellite dish for whatever reason.

Retailer slashes console prices ahead of next gen release http://www.product-reviews.net/2012/01/30/retailer-slashes-console-prices-ahead-of-next-gen-release/ http://www.product-reviews.net/2012/01/30/retailer-slashes-console-prices-ahead-of-next-gen-release/#comments Mon, 30 Jan 2012 17:44:00 +0000 Gary Johnson http://www.product-reviews.net/?p=148193 Later this year will see Nintendo launching its new Wii U console after it was first announced at last year’s E3 event. In the meantime there has growing speculation regarding what the next move will be from both Sony and Microsoft. While that is currently not known we have news of a retailer that slashes console prices ahead of any next gen release.

Consumers over in the UK are now being offered some new console bundle deals from supermarket chain Morrison’s. According to an article over at MCV the 160GB version of the PlayStation 3 is available for only £150, while the 250GB version is priced at £200. The 320GB PS3 Karate Kid bundle is now only £200.

If you would rather have the Microsoft Xbox 360 the 4GB Kinect bundle is up for only £185, or the 250GB console is yours for £150. If you already have the Xbox 360 and want to add the Kinect this on its own is now £85.

The Nintendo Wii has seen some big price drops as well, and is not surprising considering its replacement is being released later this year. The Blue version bundled with Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games is now only £85. The white Wii along with Mario Kart is available for the same price, and the Wii Family Edition is also £85.

These prices are pretty cheap when compared to online retailer Amazon who has the Blue Wii bundle for £109.99, and the 320GB PS3 Karate Kid bundle is £229.99. While over at rival supermarket Tesco the Blue Wii bundle is listed at £129, and the 160GB PS3 is priced at £199.

Other retailers will probably soon be offering their own deals that could be even better than Morrison’s, as they try and get consumers to part with their cash. Have you seen even cheaper prices elsewhere?

Poly overkill in PS4: Balancing gameplay http://www.product-reviews.net/2012/01/26/poly-overkill-in-ps4-balancing-gameplay/ http://www.product-reviews.net/2012/01/26/poly-overkill-in-ps4-balancing-gameplay/#comments Thu, 26 Jan 2012 13:23:08 +0000 Gary Johnson http://www.product-reviews.net/?p=148011 Currently arguably one of the best console game available with regards to graphics is Uncharted 3 on the PlayStation 3. We would all have heard of the growing speculation about possible new generation consoles from both Sony and Microsoft on the horizon. The characters in the game are made up of 30,000 polygons so what would this mean for the PS4? Would the focus on graphic details led to poly overkill at the expense of gameplay?

Recently Naughty Dog had a job listing for a character artist that would involve “making million poly models game ready” for the next generation of games console. An article here is looking at games with characters with a million polygons namely Uncharted 4. The PS3 wouldn’t cope with million poly models so it is obvious the job listing was for the PS4.

Rob Redman who is 3D World’s technical editor feels the current PlayStation doesn’t have the memory or processing power to achieve such standards. Naughty Dog may have already been in the million polygon region with Uncharted 3 before slimming it down to work on the PlayStation 3.

As you can see from the image above and via the link, a million polygon character looks really impressive. Trouble is graphics are not all the story with regards to a good game, but they are obviously important. It’s all about getting that fine balance right between graphics and good gameplay that all the recent successful titles have managed.

Years ago when technology wasn’t up to today’s standards the biggest games had simple block graphics, but excellent gameplay. Some gamers feel that using over 150,000 polys, which is around five times that of Uncharted 3, into the next-gen PS4 would be overkill. In some people’s minds this would be “throwing geometry at the GPU with no benefit“.

Although we feel that having too much graphics could never happen in our opinion, unless the gameplay was affected in a negative way. Having between 100,000 to 150,000 polys in a character along with high quality normal maps should be more than good enough for next gen games. Anything after that your just throwing geometry at the GPU with no benefit to the game.

There will be many who don’t agree with this though and lust after movie like graphics in a game at all costs. With some recent titles some gamers have complained about the over doing of needless cut scenes in games, which may have outstanding graphics, but take away some of the gameplay.

Tell us your opinions on this in the comment section below.

Skyrim 1.4 patch to finally fix PS3 lag claim Bethesda, we’ll see http://www.product-reviews.net/2012/01/10/skyrim-1-4-patch-to-finally-fix-ps3-lag-claim-bethesda-we%e2%80%99ll-see/ http://www.product-reviews.net/2012/01/10/skyrim-1-4-patch-to-finally-fix-ps3-lag-claim-bethesda-we%e2%80%99ll-see/#comments Tue, 10 Jan 2012 16:00:44 +0000 Gary Johnson http://www.product-reviews.net/?p=147255 Since Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was released almost three months ago gamers have enjoyed this massive game. It has won awards and received many plaudits from reviewers and owners alike. There has been some issues though and none more so than owners of the PS3 version. Today we have news that the Skyrim 1.4 patch is to finally fix the PS3 lag claim Bethesda themselves, but we will just have to wait and see.

Previously it had been thought that the next patch to hit Skyrim would not address the lag issues that have been affecting the PS3 version of the game. But an article over at CVG is reporting that the 1.4 update will fix the problems after Bethesda took to its Twitter page.

The problems were first reported back in November and left some gamers unable to play Skyrim at all. This led to some PlayStation 3 owners to offer their own solutions to the problem that worked for some users.

Trouble is the last 1.3 Skyrim patch was also claimed to sort the lag issues but it didn’t seem to work for long before PS3 users were still complaining about the problem. The latest patch is set to hit the game sometime this month.

Has the lag issues spoiled Skyrim for you?

No rush for PS4 release yet as PS3 continues to sell well http://www.product-reviews.net/2012/01/10/no-rush-for-ps4-release-yet-as-ps3-continues-to-sell-well/ http://www.product-reviews.net/2012/01/10/no-rush-for-ps4-release-yet-as-ps3-continues-to-sell-well/#comments Tue, 10 Jan 2012 14:25:16 +0000 Gary Johnson http://www.product-reviews.net/?p=147209 We have had increased rumors and speculation in recent weeks regarding the announcement and release of the next gen games consoles from the big two companies Microsoft and Sony. It now looks like there is no rush for the PS4 release yet as the PS3 continues to sell well.

Sony has revealed how many PlayStation systems it managed to shift over the holiday season, with a total of 6.5 million units sold. This covered the historically busy period between November 18th and December 31st. According to a report by CVG 3.9 million of these were PS3 units that were shipped around the world.

Sony released the PS Vita handheld console in Japan on December 17th and has now sold around 500,000 units. This was released with 24 games with Sony saying that over 70 are currently in development for the Japanese market.

The target that Sony had set itself for sales targets of the PS3 stands at 15 million units for the financial year ending March 31st. Meanwhile consumers were still buying the PSP that managed to shift 1.6 million units during the same period, and this means the PS2 still managed 500,000 in sales.

According to Andrew House head of Sony Computer Entertainment, the successful PS Vita launch would be a welcome morale boaster for Sony staff after a difficult year. The company had all the trouble surrounding the PlayStation Network hacking and House added that Sony had “a very tough time in the company in getting to a point of (PlayStation) profitability” but have now come through that.

As the current PlayStation is still selling in these numbers it doesn’t make sense for Sony to spend big amounts of money launching a new system. The same can be said with Microsoft as well who also continue to sell big numbers of the Xbox 360.

Are you surprised by these figures?

Netflix UK launch nears as PS3s get app http://www.product-reviews.net/2012/01/07/netflix-uk-launch-nears-as-ps3s-get-app/ http://www.product-reviews.net/2012/01/07/netflix-uk-launch-nears-as-ps3s-get-app/#comments Sat, 07 Jan 2012 18:17:38 +0000 Gary Johnson http://www.product-reviews.net/?p=147096 Last October we told you that Netflix were planning on expanding their service away from the US early this year. The company has been offering its service to US consumers since 2007, and promised to launch a similar service in the UK and Ireland before a possible further push into other parts of Europe. Now we can tell you that the Netflix UK launch nears as PS3s start to get the Netflix app.

The popular service allows subscribers to stream thousands of movies and TV shows, and consumers who pay a monthly fee have unlimited access to the content that is downloaded via a broadband connection.

According to an article over at CVG the Netflix application is a 13MB download, but for the time being users have no access to the service. They can always sign up to receive a message once the service does go live.

The new offering will go up against Lovefilm that is provided by Amazon in the country. Back in December it was announced that the company had agreed a deal with the BBC to provide top shows from the channel, and they have also revealed agreements with MGM, Miramax, and Lionsgate UK.

The company will be revealing further details about the UK service nearer to the launch, which will include price plans, supported devices, and content. In the US subscribers can use a whole host of products to receive Netflix content, which includes the likes of the Xbox 360, PCs, Wii, PS3, and even the 3DS.

Will you be signing up for Netflix once it is launched?

PS3 Skyrim Lag: Possible user solution offered http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/12/07/ps3-skyrim-lag-possible-user-solution-offered/ http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/12/07/ps3-skyrim-lag-possible-user-solution-offered/#comments Wed, 07 Dec 2011 10:40:19 +0000 Gary Johnson http://www.product-reviews.net/?p=146115 Since Bethesda released Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim many unfortunate PlayStation 3 users have been met with an annoying lag problem with the game. Earlier today we told you about an upcoming patch for the game that still won’t address the issue. Now the PS3 Skyrim lag may have a work around following a user solution that has been offered.

The game has been pretty much unplayable for many users, and we are already seeing the title receiving big discounts at some retailers. Gamersmint are reporting a user over at Redit has found a possible solution to the problem. He said that disabling the auto-save options in the game and deleting all corrupt saved data had allowed him to play the game again after it was previously unplayable.

He said that is file size had reached 13 MB after playing for 140 hours, and the game would just freeze when attempting a variety of actions in the game. The solution that is being offered is that you first to remove all corrupted files and go to the game menu via the XMB. Scroll to the saved data option and you will see files that are labeled “Corrupted File”, this is what needs to be deleted.

After this load the game and go to system options then onto settings before disabling all five auto-save options. The user says after doing all this he could finally play Skyrim again. Users have wondered if you disable the auto-save option where would the game load from. But it would simply load up from the last manual save point.

If you try this option make sure you have a healthy manual save point along with a regularly updated one. You can use the back up if things don’t work with the regular one and use this normally unless you save at a very inappropriate time.

Let us know if this work around makes things better for you?

2012 PS3 Rumors: Sony Smash Bros ‘Title Fight’ – Characters wishlist? http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/11/28/2012-ps3-rumors-sony-smash-bros-title-fight-characters-wishlist/ http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/11/28/2012-ps3-rumors-sony-smash-bros-title-fight-characters-wishlist/#comments Mon, 28 Nov 2011 04:44:26 +0000 Alan Ng http://www.product-reviews.net/?p=145723 We have some very exciting rumors to share with PS3 users now, and it is rumors which are certainly going to get your juices flowing. Strong claims are suggesting that Sony and a development team are secretly working on bringing a ‘Smash Bros’ style game to the PlayStation 3.

The game has been rumored to be called ‘Title Fight’ for now, and is allegedly in development by SuperBot Entertainment. Exclusive information obtained by Paul Gale Network claims that Sony’s title will be similar to the hugely popular Wii game, in which lead characters from Sony’s first party title will join together in one big mash-up game.

There has even been some supposed leaked images from the game, seemingly confirming Sweet Tooth’s appearance in the game. For those of you that don’t know who he is, just read up on Sony’s Twisted Metal franchise. Further details uncovered at the source reveals that one of Sweet Tooth’s super moves in the game will allow him to turn into an Ice Cream Truck.

Other characters mentioned for the game include Drake from Uncharted, Sackboy (LittlebigPlanet), Parappa the Rapper, Kratos, Rico from Killzone and even maybe James Bond since Sony are working with MGM for the next Bond movie titled Skyfall. We’re hearing that Bond’s appearance in Title Fight could be modeled on Daniel Craig, the actor who currently plays 007.

It goes without saying that if this is true – it is obviously a massive deal for PS3 owners. We could be looking at one of Sony’s main E3 2012 spoilers already, but then again – when do the company keep things secret these days? We have mentioned a collection of first-party Sony characters above, but how great would it be if the game was also planning to include third-party characters as well?

If that would be the case then it would make things even more exciting for us – imagine having guys like Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid and Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy 7 – two franchises which made their name on Sony’s console before jumping ship remember. We would even throw some Tekken characters in there, maybe even Rayman as well?

Make sure you check out all of the information through the source above, including the leaked pictures. What are your thoughts on this rumored game – if it is indeed coming, which first party and third party characters would you like to see? Start your character lists now.

EA climb down as PS3 owners to get Battlefield 1943, how to get yours http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/11/24/ea-climb-down-as-ps3-owners-to-get-battlefield-1943-how-to-get-yours/ http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/11/24/ea-climb-down-as-ps3-owners-to-get-battlefield-1943-how-to-get-yours/#comments Thu, 24 Nov 2011 11:21:23 +0000 Gary Johnson http://www.product-reviews.net/?p=145646 Late last month when Battlefield 3 was launched to the world, we had the news that owners of the PlayStation 3 would not be getting the free copy of Battlefield 1943. This led to talk of legal action being taken after gamers were promised early releases of DLC instead, which had already been promised. Now we have news of an EA climb down as PS3 owners are to get Battlefield 1943, and we can tell you how to get yours.

According to an article over at CVG.com EA will now honor its original promise of a free copy of the game for owners of the PS3 who purchase Battlefield 3. The company had been trying to calm the matter by saying PS3 owners would get timed exclusive DLC content for Battlefield 3 instead.

Trouble is this was already promised before the game actually became available, so the publisher seemed to be failing to give PS3 owners anything new at all. The publisher has released a statement saying there has been a misunderstanding surrounding the matter.

It continued by saying “To address this we are making Battlefield 1943 available free of charge to owners of Battlefield 3 on the PS3 beginning this month.” PlayStation 3 owners who own Battlefield 3 can access Battlefield 1943 PSN vouchers on November 26th in Europe. Gamers in the US, Asia and Japan have to wait a little longer until December 10th and December 17th respectively.

To get your free copy of the game head over to the EA website and follow the instructions given. There were some Battlefield 3 owners who were saying they weren’t bothered about the lack of the free game, but many more would have been disappointed.

Are you pleased EA are now sticking to their promise?
