Sony PS3 2.51 Firmware to Fix 2.50 BW Forcing 60Hz Problems

November 1, 2008 by Daniel
Filed under Gaming, Sony Playstation 3

It looks like the Sony PS3 2.51 firmware update that should be up next will be fixing the 2.50 black and white problems, this seems to be caused by the Playstation 3 forcing your TV to 60Hz.

This problem is apparently to do with older TV’s and does not affect HDTV’s or some models of PS3, one PR user said that it can be corrected by going to video settings and scrolling all the way to the bottom and change the 50Hz setting from auto to 50Hz Read more

While many gamers would agree that the next model of Xbox is needed before the Sony PS4, I am sure hardly anyone would think that the Sony PS3 should be the last games system from Sony.

This is what Blend Games thinks may be possible, in an article titled “PS3 Could Be Sony’s Last Console”, they said that the “PS3 has been a financial pain in Sony’s side” Read more

Sony PS3 Users Ask: Flash player update, web memory, and more

October 11, 2008 by Daniel
Filed under Gaming, Sony Playstation 3

We asked the Product Reviews community a few days ago what they expect from Sony PS3 firmware 2.44/2.50, and we had some great feedback.

The most common request was for the next Playstation 3 software update to include a Flash Player update so users can stream video and other content, this was followed up by PS3 users asking for more Web Memory.

You can see what some gamers asked for below, have a read of these firmware update requests and then feel free to leave your own in the comments. Lets hope Sony Listen to the gaming community.

Better organization of music artists/albums/tracks. Shortcuts to randomly play all tracks stored, or all tracks on an album or by an artist.

Better codec support for music.

Able 2 play music while playing a game!

Ingame XMB whilst playing PS1 and PS2 games

Ingame screen capturing would be awesome

Some way to lock out the kids or anyone for that matter from music, pics or video that is inappropriate

The ability to mute the background music that starts playing when scrolling through your demos/games would also be very appreciated.

I would like to see 16:9 aspect mp4 actually displayed 16:9 on a 4:3 screen

Word has it that we could have a LittleBigPlanet ‘limited public beta’ in September, as yet no more information has been given. If this is true, then I can see a lot of people signing up to get their hands on LBP Limited Public Beta.

However; Sam did say that if the beta is just on invitation-only, then he will let us know ahead of time. We will keep you posted once more information becomes available on this much anticipated Sony PS3 game.

God Of War 3 (GoW3) screens and Sony PS3 release date

Filed under Gaming, Sony Playstation 3

The latest issue of PSW has just been released (Issue 111), and we are hearing that it features a 4-page spread dedicated to God Of War 3 for the Sony PS3.

They have featured four pages of screenshots and PSW has apparently got the release date as well.

GoW3 is the next chapter in an extremely popular franchise, while the title is still in the works, we know that its going to be good thanks to the cliffhanger ending of God of War II.

GoW3 will be exclusive to the PlayStation 3, and as we have not got our hands on the latest copy of PSW yet, we cannot confirm what the release date is. IGN does not even have a release date yet, so PSW have some real exclusive information there.

If you have managed to buy the latest copy of PSW, feel free to leave the release date info in the comments.

Resistance 2 Beta on Sony PS3: Eight minutes of gameplay

August 18, 2008 by Daniel
Filed under Game Video & Trailers, Gaming, Sony Playstation 3

The first Resistance was poor on graphics especially when we are talking about a next-generation games console. The video below shows you eight minutes of gameplay from the closed beta of Resistance 2.

The gaming community knows that Resistance 2’s online play is going to be massive, and so will the uptake on this game. Sadly the video below does not answer the question of graphics thanks to it being recorded from a television.

With Resistance 2 the focus has really gone towards online play, and because the public beta will not be with us until September, this blurry video will have to do for now.

We have seen the level in the video before thanks to screenshots, and as the video is poor it’s hard to see the details, but one thing is for certain…Resistance 2 will be mad online.

If you like a game that’s more “take your time”, like Battlefield Bad Company, then this game may not be for you. The game is for those that love fast moving all out action.

Watch the video below and let us know what you think. You can also see other PS3 news here.

Sony PS3 Picking Up Steam: Xbox 360 loses its mojo

August 18, 2008 by Daniel

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 is still a very popular games console but as it ages its becoming clear that the next-generation games console has some major weaknesses compared to the Sony Playstation 3.

When we look closer at Microsoft’s strategy for the Xbox 360 its clear that this needs addressing if the 360 is to get its mojo back. The Sony PS3 has been consistently been chipping away at the 360’s lead in both hardware and software sales in the US.

The PS3 looked like it had no chance when it launched thanks to the Xbox 360 having a hold on the next-gen gamer with better games, and a better online strategy. Microsoft also cornered much of the gaming market by taking some of the largest franchises Read more

Call of Duty World at War: success by flamethrower

August 16, 2008 by Justin

As soon as the internet heard about Call of Duty World at War and that is was going to be set in WWII, it hit a brick wall with gamers who prefer Call of Duty 4’s modern combat.

COD4 has become one of the biggest games played on the Xbox 360 and Sony PS3; this is mostly thanks to its modern warfare theme.

Call of Duty 5 might be set in world war two but it has a secret weapon in the form of a flamethrower. While there are many features that make up COD5, gamers would have loved the flamethrower in COD4.

There is a video below of Call of Duty: World at War co-op gameplay, where you can watch the flamethrower in action. You can see the flames cutting down lines of enemies on the battlefield.

Will the flamethrower make you buy Call of Duty 5 or is there any other feature that will?

The latest NPD Group sales figures have been released this week and they show that all positions of the major consoles remain the same in July as they were in June.

While we will touch on the exact results in a moment, first let’s focus on an interesting trend that seems to be forming. There seems to be a downward trend in sales figures for the Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360 and Sony PS3.

Looking at the past results, this trend stands out a mile but what does it mean to the gaming industry? Feel free to let us know your thoughts in the comments.

The top three places in total software sold are as follows: Third place went to Guitar Hero On Tour (309,700) on the Nintendo DS, second place goes to Wii Fit (369,600), and first place was held by NCAA Football 09 for the 360 at 397,600 units sold.

In hardware sales third place went to the PS3 with 225,000 units sold, then in second we have the Nintendo Wii with 555,000 units, and pole position goes to the Nintendo DS with 608,400.

The gaming industry as a hole saw sales of $1.19 billion which is made up from Accessory sales at $152 million and Software sales of $591.1 million and Hardware sales $446.9 million, if you want to know more about these NPD Group sales figures then go to Efluxmedia.

This is the cell-based ZEGO BCU-100 that features the Sony PS3’s RSX graphics processor. The Sony product was on display at Las Vegas’s Siggraph 2008 exhibition.

This product is Sony’s first ZEGO-branded hybrid multi-core processing platform for HD video production.

Sony’s Cell Broadband Engine is well known to many gamers, it’s the very engine that gives the Playstation 3 its massive power. Both the RSX graphics technology and Cell processor are inside the ZEGO BCU-100.

The BCU-100 will be able to process certain types of applications very fast; this includes computer graphics and high-resolution visual effects.

The BCU-100 will hit the U.S. market late in 2008 and thanks to its 1U size it can be mounted in a 19-inch rack. Sony is currently talking to software development companies about the possibilities of BCU-100.
