A couple of weeks ago we brought you news that Sony Pictures were finalizing a deal to bring the popular RPG game, Assassin’s Creed, to the big screen. Some of the details of that deal have emerged since and have left Hollywood spectators shocked and flabbergasted.

According to Vulture, the deal is not as normal as it appears on the surface, as it seems Ubisoft have managed to gain themselves a substantial amount of control over the project. This means that despite Sony gaining the rights to the movie, control of things like release date, script, principal cast and budget, are all out of their hands. This amount of power over a movie is unheard of in the industry, even for a successful director like Steven Spielberg.

Some Hollywood spectators believe that this amount of power can only ultimately lead to the downfall and doom of the movie, as they have seen it happen many times before with other big video game adaptation movies. One Hollywood agent and video game publisher representative believes the Assassin’s Creed movie may never be made at all, claiming the deal is a waste of time. They said ‘The level of control Sony gave up means, effectively, that Assassin’s Creed will never – and I mean never – get made.’

The likes of Universal Studios, Warner Bros. and DreamWorks are reported to be among the list of movie labels to have turned down the so called Creed project deal. A certain studio chief was reported to have said ‘They want to be able to pull the plug on the whole movie’s development if they decide to. It’s ridiculous.’ It is thought that the reason for Ubisoft’s insistent control is because their franchise is still currently huge, meaning they are protective over it as they are fearful that a bad movie adaptation could taint the franchise. This therefore begs the question ‘why make a movie at all?’

What do you think of this deal? Would you like to see an Assassin’s Creed movie made?

We have brought you many stories about hit games being reported to be making their way to the big screen recently including Halo and Dead Island, but it seems the most exciting game-come-movie to join the list will be an adaptation of Assassin’s Creed. Sony Pictures are reported to be the studio that is closing in on the deal to get the movie underway.

The firm has been undergoing negotiations with the games developers Ubisoft and is reported to be close to finalizing the deal to bring the popular franchise to the cinema industry. The rights were previously obtained after a bidding war with the likes of Universal and the studio is now in the final stages of negotiations involving the distribution and adaptation of the Assassin’s Creed series.

According to Variety, Ubisoft is likely to co-finance as well as co-produce the production with Sony so as ‘to maintain more creative control over the development.’ Sony is also reported to have other movie adaptations from games in development including InFamous and Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and is looking out for more potential movies from game sources.

Ubisoft has announced in the past that it wishes to bring Ghost Recon and Splinter Cell to the big screen also. A spokeswoman for Ubisoft told Variety ‘Ubisoft is actively looking for film opportunities for our top brands.’ These adaptations are the company’s way of turning their games into large brands, getting them noticed by more consumers and generating deals to make them more money that they otherwise would not get.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is one movie adaptation that Ubisoft is behind that was not as successful as they would have hoped. It only managed to earn just $335 million worldwide despite being developed with the help of Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney. The company will be hoping for much more success with their next movie adaptation. Do you think they will get it with Assassin’s Creed the movie?

Since the tragic news a few days ago of the passing of the highly regarded Steve Jobs, we have heard people from all walks of life paying tribute to the great man. Whether you are an Apple fan or not, there is no denying under his leadership Apple has changed the way many of us communicate or listen to music. We recently told you about his biography that has seen preorders leap, and now Steve Jobs the movie could be made via Sony Pictures.

There are rumors that the company is in negotiations for the movie rights for the Steve Jobs biography, and according to Electronista may cost Sony between $1 million to $3 million for them. It is also thought any movie will be produced by Mark Gordon and Management 360, via the MG360 partnership.

The deal could still fall through and studios often buy movie rights if they are interested in a project, and decide later if it is to be made or not. Any such film would surely be successful considering the popularity of Steve Jobs. It would also be nice if whoever does decide to make a film about the man, they donate some of the likely profits to cancer research or another charity close to him.

Gordon could be a good candidate for the job as he recently produced a Richard Pryor biopic alongside blockbusters such as Saving Private Ryan. There may be some who criticize any move for the movie rights though so close to the former Apple CEO’s death.

The Isaacson biography will be the only one though that has some input from the great man himself, and any such film at least can be an accurate account of events. Sony may have already been in negotiations before the sad news broke the other day. Will you be purchasing the Steve Jobs Biography?

Now that the PlayStation Network is back up and running and the PlayStation Store is accessible you would have thought that Sony could take a breather for a while, however we are now hearing that Lulz Security has hacked SonyPictures.com.

The hackers used what is being described as a “simple SQL injection” to breach the site, Lulz Security claims that they have stolen personal information of over 1 million users, what’s more shocking is the fact that this information was not encrypted and was found in plain text format.

Apparently people’s email address and passwords for SonyPictures.com accounts have been found and some of which have been posted online by Lulz Secuirty,

Roughly 8 hours ago the LulzSecuirty website was fully accessible, however we just tested it out and it seems to be down, whether it has been taken down is unclear, however it does seem quite coincidental.

We think that is ridiculous that such a large company can be hacked with relative ease and not only this keep personal information in plain text format, surely Sony need a rethink and should implement much tougher security and encryption policies, what do you think?

As we hear more we will keep you posted, for further details check out Engadget.
