We have some important news now for those of you that play Sony Online Entertainment’s hugely popular MMORPG DC Universe Online, as we’ve just discovered that the fourth major PC / PS3 update has now gone live. Not only does the latest update contain a massive amount of improvements and fixes, it also provides players with a number of new features.

The latest update provides players with a brand new raid, which according to Scott Grill over at examiner.com has both Superman and Lex Luthor working together in order to defend the Fortress of Solitude. In addition, the update also contains a new 16-player PvP map set in Superman’s home away from home, as well as a new four-player Batcave alert.

Players will also notice that the Mission Journal has been revamped, making it easier to find and keep track of both available and completed missions, and gamepad navigation hints will now be present in the UI. One issue that has now been resolved is the one where a player would fall through the object they wee standing on when they were knocked out.

The update has also made it so that players will no longer be able to move / damage the Teleporter to Kahndaq. Male emblems and female emblems have now been renamed to Mars Emblem and Venus Emblem respectively. It’s also fixed the issue where specific inventory slots would not function correctly when using a controller.

Hive Turrets outside of the Metrodome will no longer be able to be moved, players should no longer have the ability to weaponize through doors, and quick menus will no longer be accessible while a dialogue window is open. Another problem that the update has now resolved is the issue where Two Faces’ henchmen would not attack in certain hallways.

Other issues that have now been resolved include the one where black SUV vehicles were not appearing correctly when damaged, an audio issue in the Oolong Island Alert that would sometimes prevent doors from making the appropriate sounds, and the issue where released NPCs would not attack gorillas in Gorilla Island.

The update has also made improvements to client stability, improved Marketplace UI functionality, adjusted the Voice Chat distortion, updated the lighting across some of Oolong’s interiors, made minor environment tweaks to Hive Moon Base, added the ability to take screenshots on the PS3 and added boss fight music to The Batcave Outer Caverns Raid.

You can read what other changes, improvements and fixes have been made via the examiner.com website. Are you a fan of the DC Universe Online game?

Although PlanetSide fans have known about the possibility of a sequel to the popular massively multiplayer online first-person shooter game – which was first launched back in May 2003 – for quite some time now, nothing had actually been made official until now. Not only did Sony Online Entertainment officially announce the PlanetSide 2 game recently, they also revealed the first details, concept art, screenshots and trailer.

According to a recent pcgamer.com article by Josh Augustine, the PlanetSide 2 game is being built in the brand new Forge Light engine, which the developer has built in-house from scratch specifically for PlanetSide and EQ Next. The upcoming sequel is in fact a ‘reimagining’ of the original PlanetSide game, set at roughly the same time as the first game with the same world and the same factions.

The key elements of the first game will make a return in PlanetSide 2, including enormous battles with hundreds of players taking part either on foot or in land and air vehicles (there will be 15 different types) and free-form character customization that enables players to specialize in specific roles. Players will also have the ability to swap classes in between deaths, which basically act like armor / weapon loadouts.

Most of the customization is done through the incredibly large skill trees. Each class (Medic, Infiltrator, Heavy Weapons, and Engineer etc) has its own skill page, which is built up of a series of sub-trees that enables players to specialize in specific activities by customizing how their vehicles and weapons function. If for example they like piloting the Mosquito fighter, they will be able to upgrade its handling, armor or damage.

Outfits (known as clans in other first-person shooter games) will have their own skill trees to unlock and specialize. PlanetSide 2’s territory is controlled by capturing a certain facility on that territory. Unlike the original PlanetSide game, players will be able to capture any territory at any time. However, they do get significant bonuses if they capture a territory that is adjacent to their own.

As Josh Augustine notes in another article, the PlanetSide 2 game originally started as a free-to-play graphical update to the original game. However, once the team began working on the project, they decided to make it into a fully-fledged sequel instead. Once the developer reached this decision, they began building a new graphics engine from scratch to support the upcoming MMOFPS.

We have embedded the debut trailer below this post, so you can see just how awesome this game really looks. The screenshots and concept art can be viewed over on the pcgamer.com link here. Are you looking forward to playing the PlanetSide 2 game?

While the big news lately has been about users of Sony’s PlayStation Network who still wait for the service to be resumed, there were still 24 million accounts that were breached with Sony Online Entertainment. We have already told you how Sony were going thank PSN users for the incipience, now Sony Online Entertainment give details of compensation which users will be getting once the service resumes.

Brett Molina from USA Today is reporting that Sony Online have posted on their website, details of the compensation package it will be offering to customers affected by the security breach. All users are to be offered thirty days of free game time which will be added to their normal billing cycle.

On top of this players will also be given a free day of service for every day the service is down for. The service first went offline at the beginning of this month. Users will also be able to get the same identity theft protection insurance that is being offered to PSN users.

Sony is also going to give away some in-game items for a variety of games, and will be holding special events to welcome back gamers. It looks like Sony is trying their hardest to repair the damage to its relationship it has with its customers. You can get full details of the compensation package here.

Do you think what Sony is offering is enough?

Earlier today we told you that the PlayStation Network may not come back online when it was first hoped, due to the fact Sony had to shut down their servers for its Online Entertainment service. Now we have news that Sony is being pressured as 25 million more hacked users are affected.

Reuters are reporting that Sony CEO Howard Stringer has been coming under fire because of his leadership of the consumer electronics giant. Another 25 million accounts have been hacked in another security breech.

Also receiving some criticism is the likely replacement for Stringer, Kazuo Hirai, who until March had been in charge of the development of Sony’s network businesses before being promoted to number two executive deputy president.

These latest developments came just one day after the company had announced plans to prevent similar attacks happening again on its PlayStation Network. Investors have said that Stringer had made a mess of the security crisis, and hasn’t helped the company as it tries to keep up with its rivals.

This second attack happened before the much publicized security attack on the PlayStation network, and resulted in information from 24.6 million PC gamers accounts being compromised. It has also led to Sony closing down its games on Facebook.

Do you think the problems Sony are facing will ever end?
