In recent years there has been a big increase in the availability of cheaper LCD TV sets from a variety of different places. Most consumers purchasing such equipment realize that things like picture and sound quality won’t be up to the same standards as more expensive units. But we now have news that budget LCD TVs cost more to run in the long term.

An article over at TechRadar is reporting that Which? Magazine has found from tests that low cost supermarket TVs are a lot more expensive to run, which then makes the initial cheaper price far less relevant. The consumer magazine has tested a 40-inch Technika 40-270 TV from supermarket Tesco, against a 40-inch Sony Bravia KDL-40CX523.

The purchase price of the two TVs is just over £150 apart with the Tesco set costing £299 compared to the Sony Bravia at £459. When it came to actually using the sets surprising results were found, with the Technika costing around £42 a year to run. This compares to the Sony that only costs consumers £25 a year.

Over a five year period of being used with these figures the cheaper set will cost a total of £508, compared to the Sony of £559. So this makes you think that many consumers will think twice about buying the cheaper set if it was only £50 cheaper than a Sony Bravia.

Patrick Steen of Which? said “Cut-price TVs don’t always add up. Not only do they often fail to offer the best picture quality, they also hold a hidden cost”. It also has to be remembered that the cheap LCD sets on offer at many supermarkets are often cheap Vestel displays with a retail stores own branding. These can also have some reliability issues as well.

Will this news make you think about purchasing a cheap LCD TV?

If you own a Sony Bravia branded TV, we have some very important news to share with you now, as it has just been confirmed that the electronics giant is recalling some of their LCD TV models, due to a melting and fire hazard that has become apparent.

Sony has discovered that there are serious malfunctions in some of their 40-inch Bravia LCD models, forcing the company to announce a recall in Japan today, but with consumers affected in the US and UK too, since the televisions are sold worldwide.

According to a Japanese trade ministry statement, the recall was caused after a consumer called the fire department after witnessing smoke and a small fire from the affected TV set. No injuries have been reported yet, but there have been eleven incidents of overheating in these Bravia models, according to report over at Bloomberg.

It is thought that a issue related to the backlight system equipped in specific models are the main source of the problem, which can lead to the top of the TV melting. Sony has already issued a statement on the matter, which we can bring you direct from Sony’s website.

”’If you own one of these products and you notice any abnormality – unusual noise, unusual smell or smoking – please turn it off immediately and unplug the power cable”

Here’s the important information to note, as the model numbers associated with the affected televisions include the KDL-40D3400, KDL-40D3500, KDL-40D3550, KDL-40D3660, KDL-40V3000, KDL-40W3000, KDL-40X3000 and KDL-40X3500 models.

If you own one of the models listed above, you are strongly advised to contact your nearest Sony store and arrange for a free inspection or a free repair. Sony’s support website also lists additional information on the recall, including contact numbers in case you want to get in touch with Sony directly.

Do you own a Sony Bravia TV? If so, give us your thoughts on this.

When the TV was first invented the evolution was very slow, but over the past few years’ things have moved up a gear. If you were to buy a TV now, chances are they will be out of date in three months times. When we were informed last year that new Sony TVs will have Google TV built in, we were a little surprised, but they now show promise.

The reason we say we were surprised was the fact that Google seems to be partnering with everyone, and we had expected the likes of Samsung to be offered it first, as they are the world’s number one in TV sales. Sony know that they have ground to make up, so the idea of the television and Internet together at last is exciting.

Whenever you think of a Sony TV the first things that come in to your head is BRAVIA, quality and price. Two of those you would not want the consumer electronics maker to change, but the latter they have been working on, and the results speak for themselves.

Having a TV powered by Google opens the device up to so much more, and this is seen as the biggest evolutionary step yet, and that’s without the range of 3D TVs that Sony also has on the market.

2011 will be a big year for Sony, as they plan to launch an assault on not only the TV market, but also other areas of consumer electronics products.

Prices start at just $599.99, for the 24-inch version of the Sony Google TV, up to $ 1,399 .9 for the 46-inch model. There will be new models coming to market, but we have not details as yet. read our previous post looks at all the current models of Sony Google TVs.

Things are not all good for Sony and their obsession with Google TV and 3D, as they still do not have access to Hulu Plus. One thing we do know, it is so nice to see Sony come back fighting, too long has the likes of Samsung and LG had the market to themselves. Yes the likes of Panasonic and Sharp have great TVs on the market, but no one innovates like Sony.

What would it take for you to buy a Sony Google TV?

The Sony Bravia KDL-40EX43B starts the pricing at around £899 and we were wondering what you get for your money. From the pictures it doesn’t look like the most aesthetically pleasing TV but there is more to this than looks, Sony have been very kind and added an integrated Blu-Ray player!

The device has a 40” screen that has a native resolution of 1920×1080 with 1080p support, it is HD ready and has 3 HDMI input slots, 2 SCART connections, VGA connectivity, 2 USB slots and a headphone output. It also has HD Freeview in built.

While the KDL-40EX43B isn’t the best looking TV, you are definitely getting a lot for your money. The picture is sharp but according to expertreviewers.co.uk perhaps not the best TV on the market seeing as they are suggesting others that are similarly priced.

Something that isn’t made clear anywhere is if the Blu-Ray player it’s self has HDMI connectivity, maybe that is something obvious but I believe it should be stated on a spec somewhere. To read more about the TV then head over to T3.com where Steve May has written an article. For all of you that want that tiny bit more, then head straight over to Sony’s official site for a tour of the Sony Bravia KDL-40EX43B by clicking here. The tour shows plenty more angles and shows all of the features.

All things taken into consideration I would still buy this TV. Have you got one already and would like to add anything, if you do then leave a comment below
