Whenever we hear that a new Sonic game is to be released I think of my youth and how its rival Mario has left our speedy hedgehog behind. The long awaited Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I game will make its way to consoles next week as a DLC, with Sonic Colors following after.

It is such a sad thought to realize that Sonic has been left behind, as first person shooters offers a challenge that our blue friend is unable to win. Jim Avery from GamerTVNetwork also points out that Sonic is unable to compete with the likes of his old rival Mario as well.

There are so many reasons for this, but the main one is Sega is no longer the powerhouse they once were – not having a current games console is the biggest problem. Who would have thought that Nintendo from the 80’s would still have the biggest selling games console?

OK, so we know that the Wii and DS do not offer the kind of graphics that the PS3 or Xbox can give, but games like Mario have never been about that. Nintendo has always been in touch with the user, and what most of us want is a game that relieves the stress and just have fun – yes FPS games offer fun, but I cannot say that they alleviate my stress, can you?

Do you think that there is still a future for Sonic, or should he hang up his white sneakers and retire to Florida?

When you think of iconic characters from a video game I cannot think any modern-day ones that have the popularity and appeal as Sonic and Mario. When they both landed all those years ago the gameplay was basic in function, but that seemed part of the appeal. But how have they been able to hold on to that iconic status when there are much better games on the market today?

That answer I believe is simple, back then there was not much choice – so our little blue hedgehog and our favorite plumber did not have much in the way of competition. However, nowadays is very different, there are so many different games to choose from – all with huge budgets. Finding a character that stands out has now become much more difficult.

When we look at the numbers it looks as though Mario has got Sonic licked – 222 million compared to 70 million respectively. However, Mario has been around much longer and still has the Nintendo platform to offer more new games.

This is a different story for Sonic, he is much younger and with Sega not able to offer any sort of games console – those numbers do not seem that bad after all. Phil Aronson from Examiner has been taking a much closer look into the popularity of Sonic and Mario, and explains that we should not write the hedgehog or Sega off just yet

On Thursday this week Sonic will be 19 years old, therefore Microsoft have decided to celebrate by discounting all four of their Sonic titles which are available from the Xbox Live Marketplace.

The four games are Sonic the Hedgehog (the original), Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles, usually these titles would set you back 400 Microsoft points ($5) each, however on the 24th of June they will cost just 240 Microsoft Points ($3) each.

I have already purchased a couple of the Sonic games for my missus, however I may buy the other two for her as an early birthday present while they are cheap!

If you would like to take advantage of these deals check out the following links on Thursday (make sure they are 240 MSP) before you add them to your download queue. Add Sonic The Hedgehog here, Sonic The Hedgehog 2 here, Sonic The HedgeHog 3 here and Sonic and Knuckles here.
