To commemorate the announcement, the company also released a trailer which teases some footage of what’s to come and promises the ‘return of a sidekick’ – Tails – as well the ‘rebirth of a villain’, which according to TechRadar is none other than Metal Sonic. Fans waited 16 years for Sonic 4 to be made and many were left disappointed so the developers are now making promises of a completely reworked engine for Episode 2.

According to reports, NVIDIA and SEGA are working very closely together and as a result the game will support the graphics specialist’s Tegra 3 quad-core processor, a chip that will feature on future mobile devices such as the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime. The game is also set to be available across other platforms including Xbox LIVE and the PlayStation Network as well as on mobile OS devices.

Little is known about the new game although all new character animations have been confirmed. SEGA were not specific when it came to a date of release for the game either, so for now some time in 2012 is as accurate a date as we’re going to get. According to a recent article over at gamerzines.com by Thomas Worthington, Sonic the Hedgehog fans were none too pleased to find that the new title – available on PSN, Xbox Live Arcade, WiiWare and iOS – was spoiled by unfamiliar physics, which appeared to slow the Sonic character down quite a bit.

However, Sonic Team producer Takashi Iizuka has since responded to the fans reactions, claiming that the updated gameplay could not be put in place in the Genesis series. Iizuka said that they have updated previous gameplay with actions that Sonic couldn’t do previously, such as ceiling-running.

Takashi then went on to say that the fans’ feedback is valuable to the Sonic the Hedgehog series’ future, and that they will make sure they improve the quality more in the upcoming titles. ‘Episode 2’ is due to be released sometime in 2011. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will arrive on iTunes on October 7th and will play on your iPod or iPod Touch (the price is currently unknown), there has been no mention of a dedicated iPad release, however I would have thought the iPod/iPhone release will be compatible.

The game will be a downloadable title and will be available on October 13th from the Xbox Live Marketplace for 1200 Microsoft Points and PSN for $9.99. It will arrive at the Wii Shop channel on October 15th for 1500 Wii Points.

Will you buy Sonic The Hedgehog 4? I most certainly will be!

As reported from VG247, the game was expected to release in the Summer on both the Playstation Store and Xbox Live Marketplace.

Episode 1 of the game is also due out on the Nintendo Wii and Sega posted the following statement for the delay of the game.

It turns out that they want to: “ensure overall high-quality throughout the game by continuing to tune, balance, and maintain the kind of polish that an important title like this demands”.

So there we have it. No Sonic until the end of the year. Let us know your thoughts on the delay. Surprised?

At the time of the last post it looked as if the game would definitely be launched at the Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network, however it will also be available fro the Nintendo Wii and iPhone/iPod Touch.

This particular release is called ‘Episode 1′ which sounds as if there will be plenty of additions released in the future, it is thought that the game has been code-named “Project Needlemouse” to keep things quiet, however there is now an official website.

The trailer has been embedded at the end of this post, it does not give a lot away, however does state that “In 2010 the adventure continues”.

Halfway through the trailer it appears to show some gameplay footage, the game appears to have the same retro graphics, however as you would expect the graphics have been improved to suit the high-end consoles of today.

The plot for this game has been roughly given away, apparently Sonic does not know that Eggman survived their last encounter, this time round Sonic will be “Armed with his signature Speed, super Spin Dash – and powerful Homing Attack, Sonic is ready for an all-new adventure!”
