In a recent contest, aimed at producing new innovative designs from which a solar powered construction can be developed, in this case an elevated highway, Italian designers came up with the breathtaking concept, so called Solar Wind Bridge.

The idea of using a bridge to produce energy from both the Sun and wind seems a no brainer as with their normally tall structures they are constantly exposed to these elements. This makes the design more than realistic and the motion that the concept should be constructed a sensible one.

From the report by Gizmag we are informed that the design will consist of a road stretching 12.4 miles (20km) constructed with plastic coated solar cells that will harness energy from the sun and be able to produce 11.2 million kWh a year, along with 26 wind turbines built in the bridges structure below capable of producing 36 million kWh per year. Enough to power around 15,000 homes. You can read the full article from Gizmag here.

Renewable energy constructions are becoming more and more a necessity nowadays, calling for designers and architects alike to bring to the table what they have dreamt up. With new technology advancing as it is, these designs are becoming less of a dream and more of a reality. Some concepts even being looked upon as works of art, like the Lunar Cubit Solar Pyramids. Take a look at this concept design and see for yourself.

The temperature has now finally started to increase, this means two things – unpacking the BBQ and sitting in the garden until late in the evening. This will require you to have decent lighting – but what if you do not have the time for all that wiring? Well the only solution is solar power outdoor lighting.

There are so many choices to make, so we thought we would offer you a few tips and choices. The first thing you need to establish is what kind of lighting you will need – what I mean is how bright will you want the light and are you going for fun, funky or elegant?

We thought we would have a look around and offer you a couple of choices. The best source of solar powered outdoor lighting has to be Amazon; they have the standard solar lights that we are used to seeing but there are certainly some strange ones.

Two that caught my eye were the Solar String Colored Garden Lantern Lights and the Suck UK Sun Jar Solar Light. For more strange looking and traditional looking solar lights visit Amazon.

We already know some of the rumored new features that look to be coming to this year’s iPhone. These should all be revealed in Steve Jobs Keynote speech tomorrow at the WWDC 2010. But Apple has recently filed a patent that could bring a great feature to the iPhone in a couple of years.

James Mulroy of PCWorld.com is reporting on a story from Gizmodo.com about Apple’s patent on Touch Sensor Integrated Solar Panels on media players. This could be great news for future iPhone owners, but there is no guarantee the idea will ever see the light of day (pardon the pun).

According to the patent application submitted by Apple, they would cover the whole of the device with a thin film layer of solar cells, including the screen. This would completely harness the strength of the sun, turning the iPhone in to a highly efficient solar powered device.

Would you like to see a solar powered iPhone? Do you think this technology will ever make it on to any future Apple device?
