Facebook have unveiled their new design of profile pages to the social networking world that gives gives us a string of new features — including latest photos, core information and a better representation of who we are.

The problem is though that more often than not, when Facebook updates it’s look, it does not go down too well with its users.

The new design brings recently tagged snaps to the fore, and puts them right at the top of your profile page meaning that you will have to be quick when de-tagging photos you do not want the world to see.

Core information is now listed directly underneath yours or your friends name that includes where you studied, where you live, your relationship status and your date of birth. The basic information that used to be underneath your profile picture has now moved into a more subtle place in your ‘Info’ section, meaning that any custom-designed text you had there before will now not be visible upon entering the profile.

The newly integrated ‘Friends’ section has been made much more prominent too, meaning that you can easily categorize your friends into saved lists — making it more accessible to you, and others to see what friends come under specific categories and lists.

Overall, I think Facebook have hit the nail on the head. As stated before, Facebook’s track record of updating the UI and design has not been well received by users of the social networking site — but we have had no choice than to deal with it.

This time around though, I think they have got it just right. I think it looks current, and gives me the ‘real’ information I want to see when looking at friends profiles.

The real question is though, do you like the new Facebook profile design?

We recently spoke about the fact that Facebook and MySpace were to make an announcement of a joint venture, which is further evidence that the former has dethroned the latter. It’s as if MySpace knows that they can no longer compete with the new social network king, so thought best to work with them.

According to Sharon Gaudin from Computer World, both social networking sites has introduced what they call a “Mashup”, which sees both sites porting over their likes and interests. This will then be shown on MySpace pages, which is part of the new features for the late part of 2010.

Gaudin points to the fact that MySpace has now given up on the idea that they are still a social network, not sure if investors will want to hear this, as they were put on notice earlier this month? They were told that they need to make changes, or they will pull the plug.

MySpace was once the most popular social networking site on the Internet, how times have changed in a small amount of time. MySpace could have only dreamed of having over 500 million users, something that was achieved by Facebook a few months back now.

MySpace is still popular in the U.S., but that popularity is not shared by others around the world. In April of this year MySpace had just 123 million unique visitors compared to 307 million for Facebook.

According to an article on The Telegraph, MySpace lost $126 million in September 2009 and $156 million in the same period this year, this shows that the site has a lot of work ahead if they stand any hope of pleasing investors.
