Exxon Mobil did not authorize activities on Twitter

The latest news which first appeared in Computerworld’s print edition where Exxon Mobile made its way to Twitter unwittingly is very interesting indeed, well for some anyway.

Someone claiming the be an Exxon Mobil Corp employee and user of Twitter microblogging site decided to create a page on Twitter on July 28 with the firm’s name and part of its logo and even photos of the an Exxon gas station, this page had over 400 users sign up to this group that was created to receive messages being posted on the Janet at ExxonMobil.

Well apparently and according to Computer World “Exxon Mobil” did not authorize these activities on Twitter and doe’s not know who Janet is or even if she or he really does work at the company.

Alan Jeffers, Exxon Mobil spokesman said:

Whoever is posting the messages “is not an authorized person to speak on behalf of the company,” he also added Exxon Mobil hasn’t officially started using any social networking sites to communicate with customers.

Jeffers said that after he became aware of this page was created on Twitter by Janet, Exxon Mobil contacted officials at Twitter Inc and asked them if they could reserve this for company use and any potential account names associated with its various business brands, of course Twitter agreed to this.

The unauthorized page was still live on Friday and Janet started to post new messages after being absent for two days. Analyst Jeremiah Owyang from Forrester Research Inc said that companies need to keep track on Twitter and other Web 2.0 sites to make sure they do not get brand-jacked.

Rupert Murdoch not happy as Facebook overtakes MySpace

Just a year and a half ago MySpace was the biggest social network site on the net, and Rupert Murdoch was a happy guy as he purchased the site 3-years ago for $580m. Now Murdoch’s smile has been wiped from his face as it seems that Facebook have now overtaken them for the first time.

In May Facebook had 123m unique visitors; this is an increase of 162% to May’s figures of last year. These figures were provided by Comscore. MySpace only managed to bring in 114.6m uniques, there visitors are only growing by a 5% since May 2007.

This is very significant for Facebook as this is the first time that they have overtaken MySpace, in April both the social network sites were neck and neck. Murdoch has said “Facebook has done a great job of being flavour of the month the last six months of last year.” He also believes that Facebook is not a real social network, but “just a directory”.

Just a few years back MySpace was the biggest thing around, but when Facbook came on the scene things started to go a little wrong for MySpace. Many people preferred how much simpler it was to work Facebook; many believed that MySpace was too complicated to work and was a bit on the cluttered side. Founder of MySpace, Tom, has realized this and has been working hard on a new interface and is very happy with the results.

Tom, now believes that the new and improved MySpace will be easier to use, and hopes to become the most popular social network site once again.

Social Network of Choice, Where do you go? Myspace, Facebook, Bebo or another

Social Network of Choice
There are thousands of social networks online but only a few attract all the people who join these communities and the top three are MySpace, Facebook and Bebo.

Where do you go: MySpace, Facebook, Bebo or another?

Robert Colvile from the Telegraph posted an interesting article about how online social networks are “split along class lines” and the choice that you make reveals a lot about you. It is true MySpace, Bebo and Facebook are very different and attract different people. MySpace is the major name in social networking but over time this site has become much more spammy and sites like Facebook work because it’s profiles are much more simple.

In the end you will go where your friends are, if they stop using one social network you will move on. It’s really all about people and you will go where your people are.

What’s your favorite social network?

British court clears Facebook man harassing his ex-girlfriend
A British court has cleared a Facebook man of harassing his ex-girlfriend on the social network site. Michael Hurst was accused of harassing Sophie Sladden back in January, while on Facebook he sent her a friend request, this will then allow a user to view the persons profile.

Ex-girlfriend Sladden thought that Hurst was trying to intimidate her as he had already received a caution from police. Hurst had this to say in court “DJ Chris Moyles had 1.5 million Facebook friends.” He then added “Do you think he knows them all intimately?”

However the court has told Michael Hurst not to try and make contact with Sophie Sladden again.

Facebook social network security mishap after update: Did you find loophole?

March 25, 2008 by Mark

Facebook privacy
The security on Facebook is quite embarrassing when you think about it considering people were able to view other people’s personal photos that they posted on Facebook user profile pages, completely circumventing the recent upgrade to the site’s privacy controls.

Facebook should never have a security lapse because people go to this social networking place for peace of mind when on their, this is bad really considering they have only just beefed up their privacy options.

This was all discovered by a Canadian computer technician called Byron Ng, and it was verified by the Associated Press. This loophole allowed Ng to look at private photos of Paris Hilton which is bad really because I guessed she thought it would be private.

A Facebook spokesperson has said that this bug has now been fixed after only an hour of them being alerted.

Please let us know if you have been in this situation?
