According to recent statistics published by Inside Facebook, the site lost around 6 million users from the May-June 2011 period. Obviously this isn’t going to put a stop to the ever growing Facebook train and it’s plans for global domination, but a drop of 6 million U.S users will be cause concern for Mr Zuckerberg and co.

If the statistics are true, the immediate question to ask is – ‘Why are Americans ditching Facebook‘? Have they simply become bored with using the service, or are there deeper matters that need to be explored? Don’t forget that Facebook was first established in the U.S, so if any members have a right to feel bored with Facebook’s social media offerings it’s Americans.

A spokesperson for Facebook has immediately gone on the defensive to the claims, by stating that they are very pleased with their growth and the way users are engaged with Facebook, adding that the tool used by Inside Facebook to gather these statistics doesn’t tell the picture of Facebook’s growth as a whole. Does that mean the 6 million loss stat is correct then?

If you have recently quit Facebook or know someone who has, let us know your thoughts on this. Is Facebook simply becoming boring?

Many UK firms ban Facebook in the work place http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/05/16/many-uk-firms-ban-facebook-in-the-work-place/ http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/05/16/many-uk-firms-ban-facebook-in-the-work-place/#comments Mon, 16 May 2011 09:36:46 +0000 Marlon Votta http://www.product-reviews.net/?p=130860 Using social networks during your employment hours could soon be outdated, as many UK firms are now looking to ban Facebook in the work place.

This new step is to try and discourage staff from sites such as Facebook and Twitter, and is noted in an article by Carrie-Ann Skinner on PC Advisor.

Almost half of the companies have already banned the use of social media and another 63% of employees are discouraged from using Facebook on their workstations in the United Kingdom.

Staff feelings are that their employer’s reputation can be highlighted on these sites, yet the motivation and productivity of staff in the workplace is the main reason for discouraging social media usage.

Over 45% of employees said, that they think their boss was concerned about degrading views of their company put on sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

The general comments on this would be a worry for businesses that use these sites to help with the feedback necessary to enhance their companies’ financial positions. In some aspects, this could hinder certain businesses from progressing eventually resulting in losses to their profits.

Do you think this is an ideal way to address staffing productivity?

Osama Bin Laden is Dead, Picture The Event Tweeted LIVE on Twitter http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/05/02/osama-bin-laden-is-dead-picture-the-event-tweeted-live-on-twitter/ http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/05/02/osama-bin-laden-is-dead-picture-the-event-tweeted-live-on-twitter/#comments Mon, 02 May 2011 10:19:25 +0000 Alan Ng http://www.product-reviews.net/?p=129254 As most of you will probably be aware, the world has seemingly stopped for a moment as it has been confirmed that terror mastermind Osama Bin Laden has been killed by US forces after a raid in Pakistan. Now imagine the event being recorded live on social networking website Twitter.

Amazing as it sounds, that looks like what has happened, as one Twitter user who lives in the area which Osama Bin Laden had been hiding, documented the whole thing on his page not knowing that he was actually capturing the moment when the world’s most wanted man was finally found out after 10 years of living in the shadows.

We can reveal that the Twitter user in question is Sohaib Athar, and you can see a few of his Tweets below via TechCrunch, it’s fascinating stuff.

‘Helicopter hovering above Abbottabad at 1AM (is a rare event).”

”A huge window shaking bang here in Abbottabad Cantt. I hope its not the start of something nasty :-S”

”The abbottabad helicopter/UFO was shot down near the Bilal Town area, and there’s report of a flash. People saying it could be a drone.”

He continued to give updates as the events unfolded, and it finally culminated in this Tweet, realising what he had done:

”Uh oh, now I’m the guy who liveblogged the Osama raid without knowing it.”

So there we have it. Who would have thought such a major event in world affairs would be documented live using Twitter? We’re glad the tweets are still visible now, and they haven’t been removed yet – you can check out the whole thing on his Twitter account here. Let us know your thoughts on this.

Car Wash Gone Wrong: Best Videos Online http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/04/25/car-wash-gone-wrong-best-videos-online/ http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/04/25/car-wash-gone-wrong-best-videos-online/#comments Mon, 25 Apr 2011 16:36:32 +0000 Alan Ng http://www.product-reviews.net/?p=128566 We all know that most car washes are over in a matter of minutes, but have you ever wondered or experienced a time when a car wash has gone wrong? We have found a selection of videos online for you to take a look at, showing a few examples.

A few of the videos are actually pretty humorous, and videos which we’re sure you’ll have one or two laughs about, but some videos are actually pretty serious. One example which we won’t include below is when another video smashes into a car that’s being washed, sending one of the staff members flying – search it online for yourself if you don’t believe us.

One video which is more on the funny side though, is a prank in which one guy decides to unwind his window whilst going through the car wash. To his horror, he is unable to wind the window back up, and the resulting footage is pretty hilarious as he gets drenched in water with the various cleaning tools.

Another great video we’ve found relates to those guys that insist on washing your car whilst you’re stopping at a traffic light, only this time the driver has a treat in store for the washer.

One final video we’ve chosen shows the crazy decision that one driver makes when he chooses to open his car door in the middle of a car wash to adjust his wind screen wiper – what a silly thing to do.

Do you have any car wash stories that have gone wrong to tell us about?

Inspirational Facebook Stories: When Social Media Shines http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/04/21/inspirational-facebook-stories-when-social-media-shines/ http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/04/21/inspirational-facebook-stories-when-social-media-shines/#comments Thu, 21 Apr 2011 02:57:25 +0000 Alan Ng http://www.product-reviews.net/?p=128397 As most of you will probably now realise, online social networking website Facebook has become a lot more than just a place to chat and view what your friends are up to on a daily basis. Facebook has also become a very effective tool for locating lost loved ones or using the website to gather important information, which is why we now have a list of some of the most inspirational Facebook stories so far.

One such story actually saved somebody’s life, and it was all down to Facebook. That story belongs to Jeff Kurze as his wife took to the Facebook website to search for a kidney donor after being told by doctors he would have to wait around five years to get one. Thanks to Facebook, a user by the name of Ricky Cisco replied to his wife and successfully offered him a transplant and the rest is history.

Facebook is also a great tool for reuniting people back together, and countless inspirational stories involve individuals who have used Facebook to find family members who they havent seen for a long time, in some cases never before! One example is Ethel Frederickson who was kidnapped and separated from her family at a young age. After 40 years of not knowing who her family were, she located her birth certificate with the names of her real parents, and then used Facebook to find out where they were. Luckily for her, the search did the trick and they were reunited soon after.

There are many more inspirational Facebook stories that you can read over at TheRandomForest. If you have a story to share with us, leave us a comment below as we’d love to hear if you used Facebook in a similar experience.

Social Media Job Hunt: Secrets and Opportunities http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/03/07/social-media-job-hunt-secrets-and-opportunities/ http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/03/07/social-media-job-hunt-secrets-and-opportunities/#comments Mon, 07 Mar 2011 12:28:58 +0000 Gary Johnson http://www.product-reviews.net/?p=124501 The internet is growing all the time, and also the opportunities it brings are also becoming broader. The biggest growth is with social media websites, with the likes of Facebook and Twitter gaining millions of users each year. This brings more vacancies for people who have social-media expertise, as companies look for ways to get in on the action.

Sarah Lundy from PostBullentin.com is reporting that there has been a massive increase in job opportunities across the country. Major companies like Dell have shown the way in utilizing social media, it recently said it generated $3 million in sales from links from various Twitter accounts.

According to Augie Ray a Forrester Research analyst “This has been the year where every organization has come to realize the importance of social media”. He feels that with social media marketing companies no longer have to spend months working on a project before launching it.

But the work begins after it has been launched dealing with how people react to the campaign and respond to comments. This needs people who are capable of creating an overall strategy or having someone who can respond and monitor public comments on sites such as Facebook.

Dan Schawbel from Mashable has written an article a while back looking at ways for people to use social media when looking for their next job. First after you have identified five companies you would like to work for use sites like Facebook to look through the corporate pages and groups. If you find someone Google their name to see if you can find personal contact information. Use the link to see all the tips given.

Can You Get Married Over Skype? It’s Been Done http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/03/07/can-you-get-married-over-skype-its-been-done/ http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/03/07/can-you-get-married-over-skype-its-been-done/#comments Mon, 07 Mar 2011 10:43:33 +0000 Tina Chubb http://www.product-reviews.net/?p=124500 If you’ve ever sat there wondering whether or not people can get married over Skype video chat, then we can now tell you that the answer is yes – as it’s been done!! However, the wedding wasn’t exactly planned that way, but rather ended up like that after the groom was taken to hospital.

As Brittany Levine over at msnbc.msn.com recently noted, the Orange County couple – 27–year old Samuel Kim and Helen Oh – were meant to be getting married at a church in Fullerton on Saturday. Then the couple were unfortunately thrown a curveball, when the groom was hospitalized just days before their wedding.

Rather than walking down the aisle to exchange vows with her future husband, Helen Oh had to say “I Do” to a computer screen instead. Samuel apologized for not being able to physically stand at the altar, before promising to be a perfect husband who would make up for that one day.

What about the final part where the groom may kiss the bride you say? Well it appears that the wedding officiator (who just happened to be the bride’s father and the church’s associate pastor) just skipped over that part. Kim was expecting to postpone the wedding, until Oh came up with the Skype idea.

This doesn’t appear to be the first time that Skype has been used by people wanting to tie the knot either. Back in April last year, a British couple unfortunately got stuck at the airport in Dubai due to the Icelandic volcano erupting, delaying their flight to London where they were due to get married.

Have you heard of anyone else getting married over Skype?

MySpace Cut Staff In Half: Is your job safe? http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/01/12/myspace-cut-staff-in-half-is-your-job-safe/ http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/01/12/myspace-cut-staff-in-half-is-your-job-safe/#comments Wed, 12 Jan 2011 11:07:52 +0000 Peter Chubb http://www.product-reviews.net/?p=118717 For those of you looking for more proof that MySpace is on its way out, then the recent news that the service is to axe 500 jobs should just about do it. This is a huge deal, as this works out to about half the current workforce, so you can imagine many of the social website staff wondering if their job is safe or not?

Matthew Garrahan from FT.com explains that this move has been done to help save money for the company, which they hope will make it more appealing to a buyer. Currently News Corp owns MySpace, which as we know has not been too happy with the results so far. We can certainly understand why, as the company paid a small fortune to acquire MySpace.

BBC News has spoken to MySpace’s chief executive, Mike Jones, where he has been trying to alleviate user’s fears by saying that the service itself will not be affected in any way by these job cuts – try telling that to the 500 employees and their families.

I can remember five years ago when MySpace was big business in social networking, it just shows how fast this market is moving. It is no secret that Facebook has had a huge influence on the outcome of MySpace. I do not wish to get too personal, but maybe they should have read the book “Who Moved My Cheese”.

Do you work for MySpace; is your job safe?
