Who would have thought that one day the Smart Fortwo ED would get a dock to help upgrade it like you would with a smartphone. The new Dock+Go has been created by Rinspeed and turns your small EV into a six-wheeled mini-truck to not only give it more storage capacity but an increased range as well.

The vehicle itself is ideal for your everyday needs but for those who plan to travel a little further or wishes to purchase or deliver a few extra items, then the Smart Fortwo ED is not the vehicle for you. It’s for this reason why Rinspeed decided to give the small car another axle to make the electric Smart Fortwo appealing to a far greater market.

This add-on could be perfect for Pizza delivery companies or those of you who love to partake in winter sports. This is still in concept form and will be on show during the Geneva Motor Show next month, but we have to warn you that Rinspeed has teased us with concepts in the past only to leave us wondering why they never made it to production.

The Dock+Go is like an extra energy pack, which will either be fitted with extra batteries or a range extender. The third axle is said to drive the second axle and in doing so will also charge up the internal batteries on the car itself and what extra power you have left from the auxiliary batteries can even be used to power your home or you could sell it back to the national grid – in theory anyway.

The Dock+Go is not all about giving you a greater range but also about proving extra storage space and could be modified to keep those pizzas warm or other products cold. The new Fourtwo that will be docked with the concept rear axle will also have a few upgrades, such as a 12.1-inch monitor on the dash and a new Harman soundsystem with gesture control. We do hope to see this concept on the streets soon because it would be a crime not to see this make it to production.

Let’s say for arguments sake that the Dock+Go does become a reality how much would you pay for the two vehicles and what would you do if you had one?

So you have a small popular car and a famous Japanese fictional character, but who would have thought that the two would come together? Hello Kitty has got together with Smart USA to come up with a limited edition fictional character decal set – men need not apply.

Sanrio, who is celebrating their 50th anniversary thought that it was only right to bring the 35-year-old Hello Kitty brand to the small vehicle – but is this one merchandising branding too far? Hello Kitty has taken over a number of products in its long 35 years existence, such as MP3 Players, Cameras, Speakers, and even Wine.

According to Suzanne Ashe at CNET’s Cartech blog, Sanriowill charge from $550 to $1,700 for these wraps that are applied to the vehicle. You certainly have to be a fan of Hello Kitty to spoil the paint job on your small economical vehicle.

You have to wonder if this is taking branding too far? There could become a time when all your favorite characters, such as Betty Boo, The Simpsons, SpongeBob and others could all appear as a huge decal to put on the outside of a range of Smart cars.

Which licensed brand next?

The Smart ForTwo has not been that well received in the U.S., but with a number of updates coming it is hoped that things will improve. The updates aims to make the small city car trendier – let us hope that buyers get fooled into thinking a few color changes can do this.

As well as these updates there is a new Lightshine limited edition model, which also comes with a funky paintjob and 15-inch wheels. Going back to the minor upgrades on the standard Smart ForTwo, future owners will benefit from a few refinements to its interior, which you can see on Autoblog.

One of the new colors available will be cheeky matte light green, as well as a red or blue convertible soft-top model. The revised front end will benefit from LED daytime running lights – although this will be available as an optional extra.

The upgraded Smart ForTwo has not seen any changes to its engine, but they have managed to lean the CO2 emissions, so now the car only pushes out 120 g/km of CO2. Has the carmaker done enough to convince you to but the upgraded model?

The Smart Fortwo Electric Drive City Car has been getting some mixed reactions while Katherine Tweed from GreenTech Media took one of these cars out for a test drive. Some motorists asked how much she paid for the vehicle and even gave it a thumbs up, while others just laughed

This is something that small electric vehicles will have to put up with at the moment – but remember that this was the case with the Hybrid when they first launched.

Smart USA will launch 250 Smart Fortwo electric vehicles in October in the U.S., but will be entering a tough market – one that could be dominated by the upcoming Chevy Volt and Nissan Leaf, which we have discussed on a number of occasions. However, let us not forget that Smart caters for a niche market.

The car only has a small powerplant, producing just 30 kW of power from its electric motor. The vehicle is still nippy though, offering a 0 to 40mph time of 6.5 seconds. The downside to the car is its range – just 82 miles on a full charge. This should not be a worry as more and more charging stations are appearing in a number of locations across the U.S.

For price details and a review of how the Electric Smart Fortwo drove visit GreenTech Media via the link above.
